Sports: Junior Tankers swim their way to the podium



The University of the Philippines Integrated School Varsity Swimming Team (UPISVST) Junior Tankers bagged the 2nd runner up in the girls’ division of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 held last October 12 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Center, Manila.

Chelo Neri also clinched the Rookie of the Year award after her spectacular performance during the girls’ division.

Zoe Hilario succeeded in taking home 3 medals from her events. She clinched 1st in the 100 and 200 m Backstroke events and also bagged bronze in her 400m event.

“I think ‘yung performance ko okay lang pero it could have been better. To make next season better, I’ll work harder and focus on our goal more,” Hilario said when asked about her thoughts on her own performance this season.

Alongside Hilario, Cha Esmero placed 2nd in the Girls’ 200 m freestyle and 3rd in the 100 and 200 m backstroke and 400 m Freestyle events.

On the other hand, Drew Magbag was the lone medalist from the Boys Junior Tankers. Magbag took home a bronze, placing 3rd in his 50 m Breaststroke event.

One of their coaches, Denjylie Cordero, has a positive reaction regarding the overall team performance of the Junior Tankers.

“My assessment this season for the UPISVST is that they have leveled up on their character as an athlete. It is because they have become more matured. They’re braver this time around despite the fact that they lack on training. They fought from the start up to the end, with that I can see a better future for the junior team,” Cordero said.

All in all, the Junior Tankers did a good job this season, but they also promised to come back a lot stronger, fiercer, and more competitive in the next season. //by Yanna Reblando, Carlos Laderas, with reports from Jasmine Esguerra

Sports: UPIS Volleyball Teams still finding their rhythm



It was a rocky first round for both the University of the Philippines Integrated School Boys and Girls Volleyball Teams (UPIS BVT & GVT) as they end the first round of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 with identical 0-7 slates.

The UPISBVT lost in straight sets to last season’s finalists, University of Santo Tomas (UST) and National University (NU) in two of their last three games. The team put up a decent performance but was unsuccessful in stopping the powerhouse teams.

In their last game against the Adamson University (AdU), they dropped the first set, 25-18, due to unforced errors. They engaged in a neck-and-neck battle in the second and third sets led by the offense of veteran skippers Ron Castro and Carlos Laderas but fell short as they end both with a 25-21 scorecard.

“Siguro mas kailangan pa naming matutunan maglaro ng buo kasi gaya nga ng sinasabi ni Coach Hans, mas madaling maglaro kung buo kayo sa loob,” Laderas shared when asked about their team’s points for improvement.

Meanwhile, the girls team struggled in their remaining games for the first round against AdU, Far Eastern University (FEU), and De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) as they loss it in straights sets.

However, their game against DLSZ was a revelation as they exhibited newfound finesse in their games against last year’s third placers. Captain Trixie Badong, along with Yanna Reblando and veteran libero Angel Jota, led the team in this close game.

"It was a close game. The girls played so well that even the coach of La Salle said that ‘Pag kalaban na ang UP, hindi na pwedeng magrelax’ which made us very proud," UPISGVT Head Coach Paolo Mendoza said after the game. "They may have lost, but there’s nothing to be ashamed of as they fought their hearts out every second of the match," he added.

Sports: UPIS Tankers ready for redemption



After clinching the bronze in the girls’ division and finishing sixth in the boys’ division last season, the University of the Philippines Integrated School Varsity Swimming Team (UPISVST) is armed and prepared with new skills and weapons for their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80 campaign.

Level Up

According to team captain and senior Ria Amano, the team started their land training last summer break. Two weeks prior to the UAAP, they conducted their simulation trainings to ensure readiness and composure.

They also had training sessions conducted thrice a week with the Philippine Swimming League and National Team Coach Marici Gandioncho to further develop their skills and strengthen their winning mentality. The team also acquired a boost in their coaching staff with the presence of Coach Jiji Cordero who monitored the team’s physical fitness through her weights training program.
Amano believes that the proper mindset is exactly what they need prior to the competition. “Mas malakas at mas ready kami this season,” she proudly stated.

A Mix of Old and New

Aside from the improvements in their training program, the UPISVST is also banking on their two decorated rookies, who are expected to make a statement in their UAAP debut. All eyes are on Rikki Melencio, who qualified for the Southeast Asian Age Group Swimming Championships 2017, and Chelo Neri, a prized recruit from Paref Rosehill.

“Nilo-look forward ko po ‘yung maraming malakas na kalaban at new personal best times,” VAAS recruit Neri expressed.

Co-Captain Polo Uera also believes that their young guns will deliver and contribute in UPISVST’s redemption. “Masasabi ko po na very promising ang rookies namin this year [with one] Rikki, already being part of the Philippine team as well as Chelo who is already a bemedalled swimmer at a young age.”

Veterans Zoe Hilario, Cha Esmero, Chloe Fabic, and Suzy Uy are expected to lead the girls to another podium finish with their experience while the boys are counting on Uera and international stalwarts Drew Magbag and David De Layola to guide them in achieving better results.

Sports: Junior Maroons falls short of UAAP79 Final Four


The National University (NU) Bullpups dominated the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Junior Maroons, 90-64, in their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) match-up on February 1 at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

Ralph Labao stepped up by tallying 21 points and 2 rebounds but NU’s solid defense held UPIS’ main scorer Juan Gomez de Liano (GDL) to only 9 points and 14 rebounds.

The loss to the Bullpups dimmed the Maroons’ final four hopes but it was the De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) Green Archers that completely shut down the door on UPIS as they snatched the last playoff ticket via an 82-69 win on February 4 at the Filoil Flying V Arena.

It was a total team effort for UPIS led by Gomez de Liano who scored 12 points and provided 6 rebounds while Labao and Matt Santiago scored 12 points apiece. Senior Bryan Lina also chipped in 9 points and 4 rebounds and was very vocal in leading the team.

UPIS dominated the first 12 minutes of the game, scoring 22-16, but the Archers came back to steal the first half from the Junior Maroons, 42-34. In the third quarter, UPIS made a big run led by GDL and Labao to cut the lead to 1 at the end of the quarter, 57-56.

However, the Maroons were clearly affected by the referees’ calls so it became difficult for them to defend against the DLSZ comeback.

It was an emotional game for the team, especially for seniors Lina, Gomez de Liano, and Lagahit. They exhausted all effort, showed courage, and poured their hearts out until the final buzzer of their high school UAAP career that left their fans and supporters teary-eyed in the arena.

“Naka-mindset kami na papasok kami sa final four pero nung na-realize kasi namin na last game na, nag-flashback lahat,” said Lina. “Sobrang thankful rin kami sa UPIS Community kasi nakita namin yung pagbabago sa suporta at kayo talaga yung nagbibigay ng motivation sa amin,” he added.

He also wants their teammates to learn from their mistakes this season. “Minor setback for a major comeback,” Lina proudly shared.

The UPIS Basketball Team led by UPIS alums Coach Paolo Mendoza and Coach Ogie Gumatay will try for redemption next season. The Labao Brothers, Ralph and Rafael, will lead the team next season together with seniors Jaggie Gregorio and Joelo Tupaz .// by Carlos Laderas

Sports: UPIS TnF places 4th in UAAP79



The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Dashing Junior Maroons fell short of their target podium finish, placing fourth on both girls and boys divisions in their UAAP79 campaign last February 8-12, 2017 at the ULTRA Sports Complex, Pasig.

They brought home a gold, three silvers, and four bronzes in a considerably successful season despite all the challenges they faced.

Veterans Gab Aparato and Charles Epino both with injured hamstrings, played their hearts out and added three medals for the team.

“We gave it all we could, it just so happens na ang lakas talaga ng kalaban. We were at our best and we made the most out of the situation we had,” said Aparato.

Epino, together with Jasper Atela, Reinard Grimaldo and Christian Pagadora, won a hard-fought silver in the 4x100 relay. The same core with Jerick Marquez instead of Pagadora bagged a bronze in the 4x400m relay.

“Proud ako sa teammates ko siyempre kasi kahit alam nilang hirap ako makatakbo, tuloy parin. Salamat din sa crowd kasi naging malaking factor sila sa takbo namin,” Epino proudly said.

Gyles Abac, Trent Madjus, and Forth Soriano conquered the tartan track in the 5000m and 3000m walk events, dominating the podium and gathered five medals in total. According to Madjus, they just followed and executed their plan and it paid off.

For the girls’ team, Shaina Queri took home a bronze in the shotput event while Caila Cadiz, despite her short preparation time delivered well in her own events.

The whole UPIS Track and Field Team (TnF), especially the seniors, extended their gratitude to the UPIS community for their overwhelming support which motivated the team especially in the last three days of the competition.

“Nakakatuwa na maraming nagpunta at nagpaabot ng support sa amin. Malaki ang pasasalamat namin sa kanila,” said Soriano, a 4-year veteran in the team. // by Julian Taloma

Sports: UP Fencing Team competes in UAAP S79


The University of the Philippines Junior Maroon Fencing Team participated in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) last Wednesday to Saturday, February 8-11 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena.

The trio, consisting of Grade 11 students Enzo Bautista, Rad Pascual, and Raymund Creencia, fell short of their attempt to reach their most wanted podium finish after University of the East (UE) extended their streak, winning in every single division and finishing this season as the champions.

“Kaya ko sana na better yung results,” Bautista said when asked if he was satisfied with his performance this year after ranking 6th overall in the boy’s individual epee. It was a close fight between Bautista UE’s RJ Perez in the quarterfinals that ended the former’s fight for a semi-finals seat.

Sports: UPIS TnF Team: Dashing to the Top



For the UPIS Track and Field (TnF) Team, last year was a successful return to the podium.

With lightning on their cleats, they ran through boundaries and now, after months of hard work and preparation, they’re dashing their way back to the podium. This time, they’re not letting that gold out of their sights.

Better Than Ever
With seniors at the helm, the UPIS TnF Team aims to improve last year’s bronze finish in this year’s 79th UAAP Season on February 8-12 at the ULTRA Philippine Sports Complex. With majority of the core players still intact, the TnF Team hopes to leave the mistakes of the past season behind them.

According to their team captain, Gabriel Aparato, they have been preparing intensely by joining off-season competitions like the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and the Milo Little Olympics. “This year mas may experience na kami and more trained,” he explained. The said competitions gave them more time to evaluate their performances, focus on their weaknesses, and improve in every way they can.

After a forgettable performance last year, with only one player earning a medal, the TnF throwers vow to make this season count.

Throughout the pre-season prep, they never missed opportunities to improve by training almost 7 days a week. According to some of them, trainings are becoming more intense as the season approaches. “Nag-iba sistema ngayon. Dati apat lang kinukuha tapos lahat ng events sa kanila, pero ngayon nadagdagan na yung kinuha kaya mas makakapag-focus na kami sa events namin,” said Nathan Ramos about the huge changes in their line-up.

Another factor that they think will affect their standing is the huge improvement of returning senior James Cruz. Don’t let his height distract you from the things he can do inside the track oval. He is a beast. In fact, he is one of the only two athletes who made it past the 10m mark at the shotput event in last year’s Milo Little Olympics.

Swan Song
All eyes, however,  are on the 18 Seniors, including Forth Soriano and Charles Epino, as they don the colors of maroon and green one last time.

Soriano has already bagged 3 golds and a bronze in his UAAP career while sprinter and former team captain Epino has 3 bronzes, a silver, and a gold to his name.

Their experience and leadership will come a long way as they can use it to take advantage of the younger teams. Backing them up are fellow returnees Christian Pagadora, Gyles Abac, and Jasper Atela.

The Silent Operator
You might think of him as the quiet type, but when he gets his spikes on, veteran sprinter Jasper Atela becomes a completely different person. Disqualified after being late for his triple jump event, costing him, and ultimately the team, crucial points, Atela is said to be the missing link in last year’s title run. Despite this minor setback, nothing stopped him, Epino, Jerick Marquez and Reinard Grimaldo, from finishing third in the 4x400 relay during the recent Milo Little Oympics.

Training hard every day and avoiding injury-causing activities, Atela’s preparation is certainly a road paved for redemption. According to his team mates, he is certainly one of the players to watch out for.

Girl Power
With more schools expected to join the girls’ division, debuting senior Shaina Queri is expected to lead the TnF Dashing Junior Maroons to another podium finish in the girls’ division.

After playing twice in the UAAP with the UPIS Girls Volleyball Team, she found new love on the tartan track. Other seniors have said that she has been preparing all year long and that she aims to emerge at the top in all three of her events. Although she displayed amazing pre-season performance, Queri admitted that the UAAP is on a different level.

“Siyempre iba pa rin yung UAAP dahil mas may pressure dun. Tapos yung mga makakalaban namin alam naming sobra din silang naghahanda,” she shared. Still she hopes for the UPIS community’s support as they aim to make the top three this season.

Next in Line
Now that this is the last year for the TnF team’s core, new players need to step up and fill in their shoes.

Aparato, Bea Jacinto, Grimaldo, Megarth Morillo and Josh Sabido are getting ready to take on this responsibility. Even as they compete in this year’s UAAP with the burden of carrying the team’s name next year, they expect to dominate the coming season. Despite being younger than most of their teammates, only Jacinto is competing in the UAAP for the first time.

“Excited! Pero more on kinakabahan kasi first time,” she says about playing in the UAAP for the first time.

With both old and new faces, the UPIS TnF team is certainly going to take the UAAP Season 79 by storm. With the prospect of success in their books, they certainly won’t be settling for anything less than last year’s performance. // by Blade Saliva and Julian Taloma

Sports: UPIS Junior Maroons defeats UE

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Basketball Team dominated the UE Red Warriors 95-63, at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 79 last Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Fil-oil Flying V Arena.

Juan Gomez de Liano led the team with 24 big points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Ralph Labao played spectacular defense, tallied 10 huge steals, and contributed 14 points and 9 rebounds. It was a total team effort as their bench also produced 23 points.

The Junior Maroons started the game strong with confidence and owned the first half with a score of 46-24. They used their sneaky defense to minimize the scoring of the Red Warriors.

Despite a great start, the team struggled at the 3rd quarter. They only scored 13 points that gave the Red Warriors hope and ended the 3rd quarter, 59-52. But UPIS Fighting Maroons came back and never looked back after a crucial 3-point shot by UPIS veteran Bryan Lina. They ended the last quarter with 36 points that gave them the 95-63 win.

“We are all in one page. Maganda yung start ng game namin and consistent yung laro namin,” Lina said when was asked about the key to their win. “Maganda rin yung mindset namin kasi we came off a big win versus DLSU so parang confidence booster namin yun,” he added.

But after this big win, the UPIS Junior Maroons falls into a 2-game losing skid after losing against UST and FEU last November 22 and 26, respectively. UST escaped UPIS, 69-67, while they get their 3rd loss against dominant FEU, 84-68.

The Junior Maroons is currently tied with Ateneo at fifth place with a 2-3 standing. They will try to end their losing streak next Saturday, December 3, 2016 versus ADMU Blue Eaglets at the Filoil Flying V Arena. //by Carlos Laderas

Sports: Volleyball Team seniors battle it out for the last time in UAAP S79



The UPIS Boys Volleyball Team’s (BVT) and Girls Volleyball Team’s (GVT) graduating players fought their hearts out as their 79th UAAP season came to a close last November 6 at Adamson University Gym.

GVT seniors Urielle Lilang, Angelica Jota, Caila Cadiz, and Angelique Angala and BVT seniors Carlos Laderas, Sam Agaran, Angelo Cinco still hold their heads high as they bow out of their last UAAP season, giving a fight worth remembering.

Though the teams ended in 7th and 8th place respectively, they bid UAAP goodbye armed with lessons and memories they will cherish for life.

“Maraming nangyari sa team before magstart yung season kaya masaya pa rin ako na pagdating sa huli naging maayos, masaya, at nag-enjoy pa rin,” former girls’ team captain Lilang said. “At may feeling ng fulfillment kasi naging part ako ng UPISGVT,” she added.

Jota, who also played with the team for 5 years, shared her sentiments. “Sana mahigitan nila yung nagawa namin this year at mas magkaroon pa sila ng team spirit na magtatagal.”

On the other hand, BVT team captain Laderas said, “Masaya ako kasi kahit na madaming nangyari sa team bago mag-season, solid pa rin kami as a team.”

On November 6, marking the last day of the UAAP eliminations, the UPIS Volleyball teams fought against powerhouse teams UE and NU, making the seniors’ last games a tough one. The UPISBVT lost against last year’s runner up, the UE Red Warriors, in three straight sets, while the girls suffered the same, losing to defending champions, the NU Bullpups. //by Maica Cabrera and Julian Taloma

Sports: Jazper Pacis hinirang na Rookie of the Year



Iniuwi ni Jazper Pacis ang Rookie of the Year Award sa Season 79 ng University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Table Tennis Tournament na ginanap noong Oktubre 7,8,14,16 sa ADMU Blue Eagles Gym.

Naging maganda ang ipinakita ni Pacis sa kanyang unang pagsabak sa UAAP. Nagpakitang-gilas siya sa isang "Love Set Performance" sa kanyang kalaban mula sa Adamson Falcons. Tinalo rin niya ang beterano ng ADMU Blue Eagles sa set score na 3-0. Sa laban kontra DLSZ Green Archers, nakagawa siya ng isang comeback matapos habulin ang score na 0-2 at ipanalo ang laro sa 3-2.

Kapana-panabik ang naging pasahan at palitan sa kanyang mga laro, kaya naman lalo pa niyang nakumbinsi ang mga hurado upang mapili siya bilang Rookie of the Year.

"Naging motivation ko po ang kuya ko dahil todo suporta siya sa akin," sabi ni Pacis nang tanungin siya sa kanyang naging motibasyon sa nagdaang season. "Masaya naman po (ang unang taon ng paglalaro)," dagdag pa niya.

Tinapos ng kanilang koponan ang Season 79 sa ika-6 na pwesto.

Hindi man nakamit ng kanilang team ang mataas na posisyon, pinatunayan pa rin ni Pacis ang tapang at puso ng isang UPIS student-athlete nang makuha ang Rookie of the Year Award.

Lumahok sa University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 Table Tennis Competition ang UPIS Junior Maroons Table Tennis Team noong Oktubre 8, 9, 15, at 17 sa Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagle Gym.

Matapos ang apat na buwang paghahanda, buong-pusong sumabak sa laban ng UAAP ang UPIS Table Tennis Team. Sa pangunguna ng seniors ng boys team na sina Raymund Creencia, Fiel Delos Reyes, Jomer Dula, James Ecito, Lamberto Fonseca, Rene Rollon, Blade Saliva at ng team captain ng girls na si Chae Rivera, tinangka nilang higitan ang kanilang ranking noong nakaraang taon.

Sa unang round ng elimination, puso at tapang ang ipinakita nila lalo na sa kanilang laban sa ADMU. Kinapos man sila sa dulo sa score na 2-3, bumawi naman sila sa ikalawang round sa score na 3-2, matapos makuha ni Blade Saliva ang deciding set, 11-8.

Dikit din ang naging laban nila sa De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) nang habulin ni Jasper Pacis ang set score na 0-2 patungong 3-2. Ngunit ‘di nagpadaig ang defending champions at nasungkit ang panalo sa score na 3-1 pabor sa DLSZ.

Nagpakitang-gilas rin si Pacis matapos ang kanyang “love set performance” kung saan walang naipuntos ang kanyang kalaban mulsa Adamson Falcons subalit kulang pa ito para makasungkit ang team ng isa pang panalo. Natapos ang laro sa score na 1-3.

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Girls Varsity Swimming Team swam their way to third place of the UAAP Season 79 Swimming Competition held on October 21-24 at the Rizal Memorial Complex.

The girls tallied a total of 238 points for their third straight 2nd runner-up finish since 2014.

Their spectacular performance was led by Zoe Hilario's record-breaking swim in the 400M Individual Medley where she timed 5:22.87 breaking the former record, 5:22.97, by a heart stopping millisecond.

“I felt really happy and proud,” Hilario said. “I didn’t know that I had the capacity to break the record.”

The team took home 15 medals with Hilario bagging a total of 7: 1 gold, 5 silvers, and a bronze. Charize Esmero won 4 medals, taking the gold in the 100M backstroke event, silver in both 800M and 400M freestyle, and bronze in 200M backstroke. Chloe Fabic also added a bronze medal in the 200M butterfly.

Esmero and Fabic, together with Isabel Baclig and Chesca Joves, took home the bronze in the 4x100 freestyle relay while Joves, her sister Franz, and juniors Rodgers and Luan Silvestre, won the silver from the 4x50 medley. Suzy Uy, Mae Rodgers, Jammy Mapa, and Waya Silarde earned a bronze in the 4x50 freestyle relay.

According to the girls’ team, they prepared well for this season. They trained every day and set a winning mindset before the season started. Moreover, they encourage each othe to do their best.

The UPIS Boys Swimming Team, on the other hand, finished 6th in the tournament. Veteran Drew Magbag led the team with 2 silvers and 1 bronze.

“I always try my best not to miss a day without swim,” said Drew Magbag when was asked about his personal preparations. “You dream, you plan, you work for it, and you achieve it,” he added.

Sports: UPIS Table Tennis Team prepares for UAAP battle



The UP Integrated School (UPIS) Table Tennis team will start their University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 campaign on the first week of October at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagle Gym.

Ranking 5th last season, the UPIS Table Tennis Team has been preparing for six months with expectations of a stronger finish this season.

This season, they acquired three new recruits, including rookie Jasper Pacis who added firepower to their already intact core. Pacis is expected to make an explosive debut after ranking first in the pre-season team evaluation. He reinforces the experience of returning seniors Rene Rollon II and James Ecito.

The Girls team, which is mostly composed of VAAS recruits, is also looking forward to a better UAAP campaign.

When asked about what UPIS can expect from the team this season, team captain Rollon said, "Mas naghanda kami ngayon at mas nag-improve dahil mas united kami." They practiced in-game techniques by playing against other schools in tune-up games.

"Win or lose, we'll fight,” their seniors promised. “Pero ito na ang last year namin kaya ibibigay na namin ang aming buong makakaya para manalo," they added.

The table tennis team goes up against six other UAAP schools, including last year’s champions, De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ). The whole tournament spans seven days with the first round starting on October 8 and 9.

Sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon, nakibahagi ang UPIS athletes sa UP Pep Rally noong Agosto 24 sa UP Theater.

Ang Pep Rally ang nagsisilbing hudyat ng pagsisimula ng kampanya ng unibersidad sa UAAP Season 79.

Nakilahok ang mga miyembro ng iba’t ibang koponan ng Junior teams ng UP tulad ng volleyball, track and field, swimming, at pep squad.

Dahil sa matinding preparasyon ng mga atleta ng UPIS, naging patok sa mga manonood ang kanilang pagtatanghal. Bumida ang mga lalaking atleta tulad ng mga miyembro ng Track and Field Team na sina Gyles Abac, Christian Pagadora, Dane Jamandron at swimmer na si Kennard Bondal sa kanilang pagtatanghal ng Ignition.

Samantalang nagpasikat naman sina Yanna Reblando, Rain Grimaldo, Suzy Uy, Faith Austria at iba pang babaeng manlalaro sa pagkanta at pagsayaw ng Bangbang. Sa katunayan, umani ng maraming reaksyon at magandang komento sa social media ang pagbirit ni Reblando.

Sports: UPIS TnF comes back strong, wins 3rd place in UAAP78

They're back!

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Track and Field proved themselves worthy with a roaring comeback as they bagged the title of 2nd Runner-Up in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 Track and Field Tournament at Ultra, Pasig last February 19-21, 2016.

Walkers Forth Soriano, Gyles Abac, and Trent Madjus, all seniors, showed their domination as they swept the 5000m walk, taking home the gold, silver, and bronze, respectively, on the first day.

Soriano also staved off contenders by claiming the gold medal in 3000m walk alongside Abac who took the silver medal. Christian Pagadora was declared the 1st runner up in the 400m hurdles.

Even though this was the first year for Girls’ division in UAAP, Shana Iniego, Jaja Ledesma, Stephanie Bello, and Tricia Raza bagged the bronze medal for the 4x100m relay while Iniego, Ledesma, Raza and Gelleen Esposo took home another bronze for 4x400m relay.

Pagadora, Charles Epino, Jerick Marquez, and Reinard Grimaldo won the bronze medal for the 4x400m relay Boys’ division.

Epino was also declared as the second runner up for the 400m sprints. Inni Domingo claimed the bronze medal in Shotput throw, Girls’ division.

Sports: UAAP Board denies UPIS Juniors appeal for rematch

The UAAP Board scrapped chances of a possible rematch between the UPIS Junior Fighting Maroons and the UST Tiger Cubs yesterday, December 2.

The Maroons lost by default to the Tigers at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym on November 21 due to a miscommunication regarding the game schedule.

The team was not informed that the match, originally slated at 1:00 in the afternoon, was moved to 9:00 a.m.

A UAAP secretariat phoned Coach Allan Gregorio at 8:30 am on game day saying that their opponent was already waiting for them.

The UPIS team rushed to get to the game but due to heavy traffic along Katipunan Avenue, they arrived an hour later, and by then, the result has been decided.

The UPIS Junior Maroons currently have a 0-5 win-loss record after dropping their assignments against FEU, DLSZ, UST, NU, and ADMU. They play their next game on December 5 against Adamson. / by Raymund Creencia

Sports: UPIS edges UE to win last game of season ‘77

The UPIS Junior Maroons orchestrated a masterful demolition of the UE Junior Warriors en route to a 93-65 win in their last game of UAAP Season ’77 last Saturday, January 31 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

Third-year ace power forward Javi Gomez de Liano showed his monstrous form, scoring 26 points and 11 rebounds, pacing the Junior Maroons in their win.

Graduating players Joe Gomez de Liano and Team Captain Enzo Barraquias both had great games in their last time wearing the Junior Maroon uniform, combining 22 points and 19 rebounds.

The key for the win was ball movement, as the Junior Maroons dished a team total of 24 assists, compared to the Junior Warrior’s 10 dimes.

The Junior Maroons fought toe-to-toe with the Junior Warriors in the opening quarter, with the latter getting the lead at the end of the first, 19-20.

With 4:54 left in the second quarter and the Maroons up 30-29, Barraquias suffered a cut in the right forehead after a head collision with UE’s Camillus Altamirano. That seemed to be the turning point of the game as the Maroons went on to grab the second quarter, 41-34.

The Maroons never looked back after that as they extended the lead in the second half. The largest lead of the game was 30 points, 93-63, at the 0:59 mark of the final quarter after reserve Matt Santiago knocked down two free throws.

Team captain Barraquias was all praises for the team in their win.

“Everyone stepped up. We had 24 assists compared sa whole season average naming na 7,” he said.

He also has good words for the future Junior Maroons team.

“They’re in good hands. Nangyari na ang worst case scenario and 1 year pa lang sila nagsasama-sama. Ngayon may 3 additional players, malaking tulong ito para sa team lalo na nandiyan si Gozum, he said.

Will Allen Gozum is skilled third-year center acquired by UPIS this season but sat out this season to complete his residency.

Barraquias added that the team is already talented but needs to improve certain aspects of their game such as focus, discipline, and teamwork. / by Macky Barrientos

Junior Maroons loses thriller game, drops to 1-6

The UPIS Junior Maroons lost a close contest against the Adamson Baby Falcons, 56-50, to close out the first round of Season 77 with a 1-6 record last December 20 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

Third year wingman Allane Barles led the charge for the Maroons with his 13-point output. Jaggie Gregorio and Bryan Lina provided support by adding 11 and 7 points respectively.

The Junior Maroons succumbed to the Baby Falcons’ hot shooting in the first half where they trailed, 30-18, at the halftime break.

Adamson extended its lead to 19 as they unleashed an 8-1 run with more than six minutes remaining in the third.

UPIS then bounced back and staged a furious 13-4 run to end the third quarter and close the gap at 36-45.

Both teams struggled to score in the first few minutes of the fourth and final quarter. Junior Maroons’ Coach Allan Gregorio was slapped with a Technical Foul in the 7-minute mark because of his violent reaction to a non-call on a missed Barles layup.

The Junior Maroons nonetheless were not fazed as the younger Gregorio sparked another spectacular run by the Maroons which brought them to within one, at 49-50, with around two minutes remaining.

That was the closest they could get, however, as the breaks of the game in the dying seconds went in favour of the Baby Falcons, thus securing their win.

The Junior Maroons has lost six straight games after winning their first assignment against UE.

Soriano, Abac prevail in UAAP77 walk events

Juniors Forth Soriano and Gyles Abac dominated the 3000m (3k) and 5000m (5k) walk events in the UAAP Season 77 Athletics competition held from December 6-10 at the PSC Track Oval in Pasig.

Soriano went home with the gold medal in the 3k walk and the bronze in the 5k. Abac, on the other hand, got the silver in both events.

Other members contributed to the UPIS Track and Field (TnF) team’s 148 points for a 5th overall finish this season.

Fellow juniors Charles Epino and Jasper Atela and seniors Raffy Oracion and team captain Rafael de Peralta beat out all but one on their way to a silver medal finish in the 4x400m event.

Epino also claimed a bronze medal in the 400m run.

Kim Gamboa and Michael Barbosa also made an impact by earning 36 and 14 points respectively from their events.

Fourth-year Miguei Abogado, a first-time member of the team, was ecstatic about his UAAP experience.

“Sobrang kakaiba nung experience, kahit first and last UAAP kong UAAP yun. Sobra akong nag-enjoy!” he said. “Kahit wala pala akong pinuntos sa team, nakita kong ginawa namin lahat ng best namin.”

De Peralta had a lot of positives to say despite the team failing to break into a podium finish this season.

“Kahit na hindi kami pumwesto at least nagawa namin lahat makapagPB (personal best) kami, magenjoy kami, nagfinals yung iilan sa amin, enough na yun para mapakita namin na kaya naming lumaban sa ibang malalakas, kaya naming makipagsabayan sa kanila,” said de Peralta.

“There is always room for improvement. ‘Di pa dito nagtatapos yung laban ng bawat isa sa amin, yung laban ng team. Ito pa lang yung simula,” he added. / by Andrei Vertudes

Sports: UPIS Junior Maroons cruises to first win

The UPIS Junior Maroons start their season on the right track, defeating the UE Junior Warriors, 67-54, in their first game of season 77 on November 29 at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.

Birthday boy Bryan Lina led the UPIS offense with a total of 15 points. Team Captain Enzo Barraquias provided support by contributing 10 points while juniors Ron Lagahit, and Allane Barles chipped in 7 markers each.

Center Joelo Tupaz meanwhile led the team on the defensive end with a total of seven blocked shots.

A strong second quarter performance propelled the Junior Maroons to an astounding 18 point lead at the half, 39-21. The Junior Warriors never got back in the game, thus securing the win for UPIS.

The Junior Maroons though failed in their second assignment, losing 67-51 against the FEU Baby Tamaraws on December 3.

The Baby Tamaraws opened the game with a 12-0 run and never looked back. Although UPIS was able to narrow down the lead to four points, 24-20, halfway through the second quarter, they never led in the entire game.

Third year guard Jaggie Gregorio was the lone bright spot for the team in the game, tallying 11 points with a perfect 8/8 clip on the free throw line.
