Literary (Submission): Love In Roses

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast.

Love came with kind words and promises of forever. It came with a gentle understanding and trust, never requiring any kind of explanation. It came with a bouquet of roses, delicate and pure, as beautiful as we were.

It is not proud, it is not rude. It is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs.

Slowly, the flowers began to wilt, flawed but still beautiful. It happened in tiny disagreements, here and there. Little things that were easily dismissed, but not easily forgotten, building up as time went by without us knowing it. We continued living in our fairytale, unprepared for what was to come.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects.

And the fairytale unraveled as the first petal fell. Arguments turned into war, with the little things seeming so much bigger than they were before. What used to be security became something akin to weakness as words of kindness were transformed into something sinister. Love became a battlefield where nobody was meant to come out unharmed.

It always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

After the dust settled, after the damage was done, only then did we look back at the mess that we made. Only then did we notice the cuts, the bruises, and the wounds that we created. Every fallen petal reminded us of what couldn’t be fixed, of what we broke. Only then did we realize, in the aftermath of the chaos, that maybe the fairytale wasn’t worth the war.

Love never fails.

But now, as I sit here alone with dried up petals and the shattered remains of what once was ours, I can't help but think about the love that has come and gone.

The lines in bold are quoted from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

Literary (Submission): Pebrero 14

Pebrero 12

Literary (Submission): Ang Inabot Mong Rosas

Kahel, pula, dilaw at lila--
Kayraming bulaklak ang aking nakikita

Sa isang sulok, pinanood ang lahat
Sa mga sulyap na katotohana'y isinisiwalat
Sa mga matang kung tumingin ay kaylalim
Sinusubukang maabot ang isang mithiin

Mag-isa akong nakatayo

Literary (Submission): Wedding Ring

As you walked down the aisle,
I stopped breathing for a while,
Remembering our treasured memories,
Thinking of our next series.

Staring at your dimples,
Make my eyes twinkle.
I've been longing for this moment,
Wishing for it to be permanent.

With each step you make,
My heart shakes
It feels like it's my first time to see you,
You are the most beautiful view.

Your features are as sweet as caramel
Feels like we're on a fairytale.
It is only you, who can melt my heart,
And I will never let us be apart.

Literary: Hawak

"Happy Valentines."

Literary: The sound of my ukulele

Guided by the sound of my ukulele
Could you spare me a minute?
Ease me up, would you let me
Admiringly sing a song that I wrote for you?

Gifted you are with talent
Crafted you are with good looks,
Everyone swoons when they see you
Can you notice that I do too?

Getting to see you makes my day
Drives my worries away
Greatly inspires me
Brings me happiness in all kinds of ways.

As my right hand’s fingers strum the strings
Chords held by the other
Every note you hear, wonderful
As wonderful as you.

And here I am, with you
Charmed by your every bit.
Feeling this very moment of us together
And hope that my ukulele does the trick.

After this, I hope we can
Enjoy each other's company more often
Create more memories together,
Gayly harmonize like the strings of my ukulele.

Great things come to an end
‘Cause everything has been said
Every bit of gratitude is to my wooden friend
Along with you, who stopped and listened.

Literary: A Love Poem from a Loveless Person

Love, they say, is something everyone experiences and feels
At least once in their life
With a significant other.

Why is it then that I don’t feel a romantic pull?
I fear that I am broken
For whenever someone says that they are in love,
I simply cannot fathom what it would be like.

Because they say that when you are in love,
Everything is bright and colorful
As if one can see all the colors in splendor.
But for me, it is always dark and monotonous
Engulfed by the shadows of nothingness.

Love is seeing the entire galaxy in one person’s eyes
Resplendent with happiness and mirth,
Feeling euphoria and exhilaration whenever eyes meet
Sparks flying and warmth blossoming when skin touches skin.

Why is it that I see nothing but black holes in a person’s eyes?
Two indiscernible circles making me feel dispirited and uneasy.
Awkwardness and the feeling of wanting to disappear whenever eyes meet
Scalding yet frigid at the same time when skin touches skin even just a little bit

People’s love stories are always so interesting
Stories of admiration and contentment always coming out of their lips
Always full of smiles and overflowing with passion.
They often tell me that they feel whole with their partner,
That their partner holds on to the other half of their heart.

Then maybe the reason why I feel this way is because I am afraid.
Afraid that my story will be tragic and lamentable
Drowning in tears and swallowed up by darkness.
All I feel is empty.
And all I am is broken.

For I cannot feel love.

Literary: Sketch

“God is within her, she will not fall.” – Psalm 46:5

Lily, my love, for the very last time,

I can’t believe that I’m still able to write to you. My words still flow through my fingertips, just as how it used to be, back in the days when my body was strong and full of health. But the difference is that I'm writing this letter with a heavy heart, and doubt ate my thoughts like parasites, making my body very sick and weak.

I’m sorry that I have ruined your life in these past weeks. I know in my heart that you still can’t bear the news that you’ve heard about me. Am I fine? At this point, I don’t know. Only God can tell me if I really am.

When will this end?

If only I knew, my love. I’m sorry I’m not there to help you anymore. I tried my best to hold on to you, but failed. Sadly, I had to let go.

But before I say goodbye, my love, let me tell you what happened.

Two months ago, right after our Valentine’s date, I don’t know why, but I fell sick for a week. That was the time when you unexpectedly came into my house, and found me there lying on my bed, very weak and feverish. I didn’t see you, but I just felt that, behind the damp cloth you were using to wipe my body, I knew in my heart that it was you, since your hands are so soft and it smelled like roses. I remembered well that you thought I didn’t hear anything you said as you confessed your love for me, and how you missed seeing me right after our Valentine's date.

You don’t know that I did.

After your visit, my fever eased and my body slowly gained back its strength. I don’t know what to say. Thanking you is not enough!

I don’t know why, but after a few more weeks, my fever and the pains in my body worsened. It happens every night that I cannot sleep well. So, without you knowing it, I visited my doctor every week. After a series of tests, I was diagnosed with a rare disease. I was so shocked and in complete disbelief. I cannot tell you about it, because I don’t want to bother you.

So is the reason why I look gloomy every time I see you, and that was the time when your friend suspected that there’s something that bothers me that you didn’t know. I just decided to hide it, and I did my best to smile and say yes whenever you asked me if I’m okay. I’m sorry that I lied. But I had to.

Half of me still hoped for the time to come when I would kneel in front of you and give you your ring, and ask if you would take me as your man, as I eagerly want you to be my wife. I also hoped that someday I would still be able to see your beautiful face behind that veil, like an angel that came down from heaven. Right in front of the altar, we would face each other, exchange vows in front of many people, and clasp ourselves together with chains through our series of “I do's”.

But that dream of hope just shattered when my doctor told me that I only have a few months to live and I must go and tell my loved ones about it. My heart sank.

I know, I didn’t tell you about it. But how could I? I didn’t want to ruin your life. I cried almost every night, thinking of how I'd be able to tell you this, and what would happen if I told you so. My body felt weak and frozen as I thought of how you would react to the news.

That thought was so hard to bear, so I sat on my desk, took a pencil, and during the whole afternoon, I drew something on a piece of paper. I know that by looking at it every day, I won’t lose hope. Whenever I see it, there is this relief that no one else would’ve experienced by just looking at a piece of paper.

In the succeeding weeks, I wasn't able to go to my classes anymore because my body felt weak and I couldn't even get out of my bed. I frequently had headaches, and sadly, the usual medicines that were given by my doctor weren’t able to relieve them.

Now I know that my time has come.

Again, with a glance at the drawing, I still felt that there was hope, and for a moment, I sighed, and some aches went away. Even I was already bedridden, the paper is the only thing eased the pain. After a few more days, the pain worsened, and since my body could not take that much pain anymore, I forced myself to slowly get up and reached towards my desk to get my phone and call you. But then, I suddenly fainted, and my roommate called for help and brought me to the nearby hospital.

All I could remember is that I still brought the paper in my hands and put it weakly in my pocket. Thinking of it brings me hope, but at the same time, worry.

I was in the hospital. I just lied there, praying. Each day, I felt weaker and weaker, that I wasn't able to walk, thus I had to be carried through a stretcher in order to be transferred into the operating room. I frequently felt sharp pains in my body, and, again, there was nothing else I could do to ease it but to look at the drawing that I had done many days before. I held the paper closer to my chest as I silently wept.

Just stay strong. I told myself. Just be strong.

It’s day ten. The doctor says that my time is near. So I made this letter for you. Though I still hoped that we could still get to see each other.

But I don’t think it’s going to happen anymore.

So, now, my dear Lily, I don’t know how to end this letter. I know it’s hard for you to accept what has happened to me. It’s alright, my love. It takes time.

But I tell you this, after my death, even if your heart finds somebody else, I swear in my heart that I will still wait for only you in heaven. I promise that I’ll be there beside you, to look after you, keep you away from danger, until you have found someone to keep you until the very end of your life. Whoever that might be, I hope that you’ll be happy with him and that he will do everything that I wasn’t able to do.

No matter what happens, you are still the woman that I love – and you will forever stay in my heart. You are still the moon in my darkest nights, the sun in my morning. The fire and scent of my candles and the flowers of my grave.

My love, thank you for everything, for the love and the sighs that we gave each other together. I promise that, in heaven, I will pray for you just as how you have prayed for me down on Earth.

Goodbye, and for the very last time, I love you.

Love,

Eric
P.S. Attached is his drawing of you, which he was already holding even before he came into the hospital.
P.S.S. This part is written by Eric’s nurse. He died two days ago, a day after he wrote this letter. He was already dead when I found him holding the drawing close to his chest.

Aking minamahal,

Kumusta?

Nagmamahal,
Sarili

Literary: Palagi

Sa bawat araw na lumilipas
Maraming bagay ang nag-iiba
Paligid, oras, panahon
Palaging may nagbabago

Kapag nasa tabi niya

Walang permanente sa mundo
Maraming bagay ang nagbabago
Ngunit isang bagay ang hindi
Pagmamahal sa kanya'y mananatili palagi

Literary: Memories of Sand

We were fireworks suspended in time,
Alive and bursting with color against the dark.
But fireworks can never stay for too long
And soon enough, we burned out.

We were raindrops falling against car windows,
Fiercely crashing into each other from the heights.
Slamming against rooftops and over the rivers,
We were the raindrops that eventually petered out.

We were leaves sprouting to greet the day,
Bathing in the warmth of the sun.
We basked in the beauty of our evergreen summer
But we were leaves that withered when autumn began.

The transience we've spent together,
It's encaptured in photographs that echo the past.
I stare at them and realize that I am holding on
To sand slipping through my fingers very fast.

And so I'll relish in the beauty of the grandest firework,
I'll dance with the cold raindrops on the dimmest day,
I'll chase after the brittle leaves blown away by the wind,
And I'll stare at the smiles on our faces for the last time I may.

Then I'll break down my castles of sand,
I'll let go of every grain,
And finally let our memories reside where they truly are--
In the past, and nowhere else.

“Ang bait, ‘no?

Nice to meet you!” tugon mo.

Trip mo ako ‘no?

Ano naman kaya ‘to?

You're the one who started our conversation
I'm not used to it – to you, actually
But gradually, it became so often
that the thought of you texting me became normal for me

Waking me up every day with your good mornings,
Texting me non-stop just to tell me to eat my meals
And ending a tiring day with your "Good night, sleep well."
Became our daily routine

We've been like this for months already
You always start the conversation with a question
Then I'm the one who’s going to answer
And it's a one-way cycle

You make me smile
although I keep on getting confused about my feelings
I make you exultant
and make you feel butterflies in your stomach, you added

On the first day of February, you asked me
"Will you be my Valentine?"
Where's your good morning?
"Wait, what?"

I'm scared
Am I ready for this?
"Do you like me?"
I lied

I know your feelings towards me
It's just that I'm unsure of mine
"Can't you feel it?"
I lied again, I agreed

My feelings were fuzzy
Is this love that I'm feeling?
Do I like you?
Or I just like the feeling of being taken care of?

"I'm sorry..."
"It's fine, nothing to worry about."
the routine stopped
and I became loneliness' friend

Days have passed
when I tried my best to disturb myself
from the thought of you
But, unluckily, it's replaced by regrets

Then one day I realized what's wrong
So I asked myself
Will you be my Valentine?
And everything became crystal clear

“Yes”
I answered
Then I went out of my house
to walk around and question myself again

What do you like?
What do you dislike?
What makes you happy?
What makes you sad?

Getting to know myself again
Getting to know myself more
Learning how to be happy alone
Learning how to love myself

Maybe loving yourself first
is a way to prepare how to love someone better

Dearest ********,

I saw you die in my dream.

I woke up with tears falling down my cheeks, jumped out of my bed and kept pacing back and forth with my heart racing. I wanted to call you, text you, message you to make sure that you were safe, but then I remembered, we were not okay, and it was not a great time. I put my phone away and tried to get back to sleep.

I woke up and brushed it off, thinking it would not happen again. For the next few days, I carried on with my daily routine but as soon as I fell asleep, I would see you in my dreams. I would hear your laugh, I would see your smile, I would remember the feeling when everything was alright, but it would always end with a goodbye, with you, dying. I tried to save you numerous times, but I was frozen, I couldn’t move. My heart would ache as I realize that I couldn’t do anything about it, as I could only watch you slowly fade away.

I decided to talk to my therapist about these dreams and told me that dreams like this could mean that person hurt you deeply and the fact that I was trying to save you showed how much I care for you, but it’s also my subconscious telling me that this relationship is unhealthy for me.

Seeing you with another person made me feel insecure. For the longest time I thought, What went wrong? Was it me? Did I do something wrong? Am I not worth it? For days I kept telling myself that I could easily forget you and that I will not let this consume me. Every day I would look my best, laugh, smile, and act like it didn’t affect me at all. After a few days, I convinced myself that I had moved on and the funny thing is, I really thought I did.

You really hurt me and now, I’ve accepted that fact. I want to say that I regret loving you, but I would be lying. I’m sorry that it has to end like this, but I really need this time for myself, so that I can heal. Thank you for all the wonderful memories that I will forever treasure. Please don’t forget to take care of yourself. I wish you all the best.

Thank you and goodbye :)

With love,
********

Literary: About Time to Try

I’ve tried to find reasons not to love you
I’ve tried to find reasons not to stay
I’ve looked into your flaws and imperfections
but they still made me choose you every day

I’ve tried to deny what I’ve been feeling
I’ve tried to throw it all away
but I just can’t get myself to do so
despite what other people say

They’ve tried to tell me not to let this happen
I’ve tried to tell them I didn’t want it too
but I just can’t help myself from falling
for someone when that someone is you

We’ve gone through a lot of good memories
but there’s still so much more we can make
I guess it’s about time to try and tell you
that you’re a risk I’m willing to take

A febrile feeling
About to see you again
Red lips and short hair

Your dilated eyes
Constellations align us
Quiet evening sky

Fingers intertwined
Sunset’s about to begin
Just stay for a bit

Entering cosmos
Ticket to another world
My moon river date

Literary: Spring

We met in the spring,
When all was new
And you gave this heart of mine
A chance to bloom.

For summer left me unprepared
Just as fall took my spirit
And the cold winter winds left me hanging on on my own
I waited
Wondering
If there was a soul that echoed mine.

And then, there you were
And time suddenly slowed.
You gave me the sun
Creating a world separate from what we knew
You were golden.

Every color, you brought to my skies
And they burst with possibility
The grass was greener
And I’d never felt so free, so alive

Your hand clutched mine
As we leapt over the clouds
And I could so easily forget everything else
When I saw your face

Everything was better
Like a dream, perfection.

But we both knew
It was simply a taste of a life
That we could not own.

Seasons change
No matter what we do.
But I hope that you know
I wait for you every time
Spring comes by.

"I wanna take her out."
"Yeah? Go for it, what's stopping you?"
"Dude you know how sick she is. I'm not even sure if she's got a lot of time left."
"Ah, has it gotten that bad? I'm really sorry dude." "Yeah, don't sweat it, I think I'm dealing with it fine for the most part. I'm just glad I have you with me."
"And you know I always will be."
"Thanks man, I love you for that."
"Love you too, you dork. Though if you could take her somewhere, where would you go?"
"Oh that's easy. I'd drive her down to the pier in the early morning, and we'd walk along the shore as the sun rose. Then we'd sleepily eat breakfast while the waves tickle our toes."
"Pffft. How cliche of you."
"Shut up, I think It'd be nice."
"So, what else would you do?"
"For lunch, I'd take her out somewhere fun. Maybe to the local fair? Their food is good, plus you know she absolutely adores all the rides. No matter how many times she goes, she never gets tired of them."
"Haha yeah! Remember the time we all went, and she wouldn't stop laughing at how dizzy you were after every ride, until you finally puked straight into her bag? She wouldn't talk to you for weeks!"
"Ugh, don't remind me."
"Hahaha you wimp. Would you give her anything?"
"Flowers. Bougainvillea and gumamela, she loves those. There was a small garden filled with them in the place she used to live in before she moved here. She always told me that they'd be all you could see for miles and miles, and that they never seemed to end no matter how small the garden was."
"I'm sure she'd love them."
"Yeah, I know. I think in the evening we'd just go home, order pizza, and watch a ton of horror movies."
"Even though you'd crap your pants at the slightest noise?"
"Even if I'd crap my pants at the slightest noise."
"Haha, I thought as much."

"Hey dude?"
"Yeah?"
"I don't want to lose her."
"You won't."

The two boys finally arrived, standing in the front of the hospital door. It loomed over them, the final weight of what they were about to do settling on them.

"Hey, you sure you're ready to see her?"
"Yeah, I am."

The young boy squeezed the other's hand gently, giving him a small smile.

"Ok."

The door opened, and a bright light met their eyes, as well as a woman with a sweet smile softly illuminating her face.

The young boy took a deep breath in as he smiled back at her.

"Happy Valentines day, mom."

Literary: You

I didn't really like you the first time we met. I only saw you as a random person. A random person who was friends with my coach. We were at training back then, and if I remember correctly, you were having a fling with one of my teammates. I didn’t even bother to look at you.

The second time we met, it was a competition day. It was the Grand Prix Leg 3. My coach introduced us to each other. We didn't talk to each other at all and we only made eye contact once.

July 7, 2019 1:37 pm - I wasn't feeling good because of my performance, that you also saw earlier that day. I reacted to your Instagram story. You replied and soon enough, we started to talk and have long conversations frequently. Chatting with you was never a bore. It felt like every hour that passed turned into minutes or even seconds. It would be hard to back-read messages from the previous night because we talked about so many random things. You gave big hints that you liked me; not to brag, but it was pretty obvious. You kept on deleting messages that obviously had meanings behind them, otherwise, you wouldn't have deleted them. I could’ve been wrong about that, but it went on for days. Take note, I didn't have feelings for you then. But there was something about you that made my heart flutter once again. After a few days, you clarified that you ended your “fling” with my friend. You said you didn’t really feel anything towards her and you didn’t want her to assume that you guys were a thing. I got a bit mad because you gave her hope and you also gave her hints. You gave her your number and you had video calls late at night. Then after a few weeks, you admitted that you didn’t have feelings for her. I took note of what you did to my friend, I kept thinking that you would do the same thing to me. I tried to stop myself but there was something about your words. The way you express your words were different, it was like I’ve never seen or heard anyone say those kinds of words to me.

July 21, 2019 12:01 pm - I realized that I had to say it. You asked me what we were the night before, and I answered your question today. I admitted that I had feelings for you. Call me a flirt, I don't care. After that, every day was the same but I was happier. We were happier. We got to meet, train together, and go places a few times. My parents know you and your parents know me. You surprised me a few times, like that time when you went to the swim team’s Christmas party and the Philippine National Open competition. We created happy memories together.

Everyday was the same, we got to train more frequently together and all that. Not much has happened since then but suddenly, all of that changed.

December 17, 2019 around 9 pm - I talked to two of my best friends and my sister. I told them that I felt like I was drifting away from you. Far away. I had a dream that I was with another guy and my parents also liked him the way they like you. I felt my heart turn cold towards you; every time you said anything sweet, I didn’t feel a thing. We fought a few days after my heart changed but I didn't feel any pain. I usually did when we fought, but this time, I didn't.

Whenever we may meet, I hope my feelings will go back to the way they were. See you soon.
