Literary: Writer’s Block

I am an admirer of your stories,
I hope you knew
Every line I fancied,
Albeit they weren’t for me

Writing was your passion;
An artist to many a masterpiece
But why, all of a sudden,
Did your words fall apart?

The art once fulgent
Has now lost its luster
I know your craft too well
To realize its lack of heart

Nevertheless, I waited
For the next chapters, verses
Still, I loved your poesy
Even with the dry feelings it possessed

Deeper you fell into frustration,
And I, thinking of a solution
Scribed about you
With all the feeling inside of me

Everything, I poured—
Not a drop of emotion I wasted—
From all my admiration
To your literature I held dear

Not knowing the aftermath,
In hopes I grasped
To bring back the heart
Of the writer I always knew and loved

You’ve always liked my stories --
Those you could read
Over and over
As if each time were the first

You knew I loved to write
And quite often, I did
Until I found myself
At a constant loss for words

My words came out flat,
As I was filled with the need
To force creativity
When there was none to bring out

Yet not once did you pry
Or rush me to write
Pieces of literature
Which did not come from my heart

On the brink of my frustration,
You wrote me a piece
And you did, with such ease,
Almost enviable in my eyes

But your words touched me,
Enough to make me read them
Over and over,
Bringing about familiar feelings

Like a storm
The ideas came flooding in
And once again
I am inspired to write

“This isn’t working out anymore.”

No need for pointing fingers
For I am guilty, I am to blame,
In a snap, I disturbed the flow
Of the love that we both dearly hold
Falling in love became falling apart;
Joyous moments are now painful pasts

Why am I still searching
For a love that was long gone?
Has conceit led me too far astray
From the reality in which we belong?
Maybe I should save us both the pain
And yield to our tragic fate.

“Our timing was off.”

Such a funny and stupid excuse
From I who told you:
“I’ll stay and wait for the right time.”
A gentleman, I claimed to be
Yet I am nothing, but a coward and a fraud
What are promises then to this man of hypocrisy?

A man of your word, you claimed to be,
Ardent in your promise to stay
Until you deemed our love misplaced—
Lost in time and space
And I, a fool left waiting
For the timing we will never get right

“You deserve someone better.”

A woman of decency you are;
A woman, not worthy of torment
And I, a liar and an idiot,
Deserve no love from you
If it is only pain I bring, I must let you go
And hope you find a man who’ll love you more than I do

Do not be quick to assume I will heed
Just another spurious excuse
You should now know, more than anything else
That I regarded you no less than the best
So who are you to decide
What is worthy of my love?
“…”

Up to the last moment, we uttered none
Perhaps no words can express or deny
That we had a love that could only be ours
But now, towards separate ways we go
In search of happiness to fill this void,
The space which I can no longer fill.

“I hope you find the love you deserve.”

Literary (Submission): Perilous Beauty

She loved to deceive

With colors that she knew

Did not belong to her -

He chose to believe

In her fraudulent hues,
Conceited as they were

She hid all her flaws
Behind masks of splendor,
Not a single blemish in sight

He saw past it all

And to her, he surrendered
Not knowing wrong from right

She wasn’t perfect
And that, she despised
So much that she altered herself
He was proud to accept
Her mistakes, which he swore

Were never even there

She was a trap
A perilous beauty -

A spectrum of dangerous shades

But he was sure that
In his world, she would be
A color that would never fade

Literary: (Com)Promise

I promise you the universe and all the galaxies in it.

Yet in truth, I cannot offer you even a single star. You’re perfectly aware of how little of myself I can give you but you look past that and still insist on loving someone like me. I will never understand why.

I promise that you will always come first.

I can never be your first priority because there will always be something more important. Your world is much greater than I, for I am merely a part of it. That is all right, though, for I know my boundaries. I know the restricted areas and the lines that I cannot cross.

I promise I’ll never keep anything from you.

There are still things we have yet to find out about each other. We both have our secrets - those hiding in the deepest, most secluded corners of our hearts. Time, however, has taught us that they eventually come out on their own, wanting - longing to reveal themselves.

I promise I’ll never make you cry.

And I thought you never would. But love is a bittersweet thing, and loving you, even more so. We’ve fought countless times and cried just as many yet we’ve always found ways to make it work. Pride? There is no such thing when it comes to us.

I promise to stay.

There were times I stood on the edge, peering down at what my life would be like without you. I was tempted to jump off; to live the way it was before we met. But then I realized how wrong I was to even think of such a thing. I’d lose a great part of myself if I let that happen - the part that you and I shared. So I’ll stay a little longer, not only for you, but for me as well.

…

Isn’t it a wonder how we never seem to keep our promises? Yet you and I both know that we’ve made plenty. You see, we have this tendency to over-expect - to overestimate the things we’re capable of.

But I find it beautiful how we don’t fulfill these promises of ours. It shows me just how human we are, and how human we are together. These moments of compromise, of give-and-take, and of making it work are those that really test the love that I feel towards you. But my feelings have not changed since the time I became sure that I’d love you for the rest of my life.

Literary (Submission): Dear Universe

I am nothing
But a speck in your entirety;
A blotch of ink
On your novel of destinies–
Yet you play with me
As though toys never wear out

I do not live to succumb
To your petty desires,
Yet an unwary pawn
Is what I have become–
Incapable of escaping
Your formidable domain

Countless times, I thought
You had let my soul meet its mate
And I looked to you
With such grateful eyes,
But each time, they lost their luster
As I watched you tear love apart

You took away all
Those you had given me
Because you can
And because I cannot take them back
You did always have
That unfair advantage

My dearest Universe,
Let us put an end to our game –
I would rather lose to you
Than bear any more of this misery
Just save me from the heartache
Of losing another

Literary (Submission): Behind the Scenes

Beneath the shadows,
I am looking out
Into a world of peculiar lights
And sounds
Bringing forth novelties
In ample amounts

The greatest of which
Was his angelic face
That caused time to slacken
And slow in pace
Taking my senses,
And not leaving a trace

I longed to come near
For a closer look
But each time I tried
My hands, how they shook
And I couldn’t retrieve
The courage he took

So instead, I only watched
The way he’d command
Those lights, the sounds
As if according to plan
I could see them dancing
In the palm of his hand

I envied the words he’d sing out
And speak
Words filled with passion,
Words I wished were for me
But I perished the thought
For it just cannot be

He will never know
Of the way I feel
Because while I am here,
We will never meet
That is just how it is
From behind the scenes

Literary (Submission): One Another

Familiar
A fresh start, a new beginning
Wandering eyes and nervous breaths
Around me are faces I’ve seen before,
Some I have ever met, and then there’s
Him.

I enter the room with my fingers crossed,
Hoping to see my friends
But in truth, hoping to glimpse,
Wishing to find
Her.

One-Sided
Why is it I fall for those
Who care not at all, for me
I search everywhere just to find
A love that might never be

“Talk to her!” Everyone tells me,
But all I can say is hello
As of now, I am only an acquaintance
Who does not know how far he can go

Opposed
Valentine’s – a day of love
Filled with sweetness and confection-
Was the day I began seeing new colors
And my destiny took a different direction

The sweet scent in the air,
Everyone’s auras have changed their hue
It’s the perfect time to express my feelings!
I hope I hope she has fallen for me, too

I was the happiest I had ever been
And I had forgotten all the pain in the past
I knew in my heart I made the right choice
Someone loved me, at last!

For months I waited
For a miracle to take place
But all I saw was me-
The loneliest person in the human race

Rescued
My heart was shattered into pieces
It became impossible to repair
But some sort of magic seemed to do the trick
The magician… my Juliet, simple and fair

I started seeing her differently
Though she looked the same as ever,
Maybe it was because I once was blind?
Who cares? I’m in love with her!

To let love begin, what would it mean?

But like a fool overwhelmed by emotion
I let love break me down-
The universe had once again beat me at its game
And the pain it inflicted, I allowed

But out of the blue, my Romeo appeared
Each piece of my heart, he collected
Like a valiant prince, he rescued me
And everything since then, unexpected

To love again, what would that mean?

Mutual
As much as I try to suppress these feelings,
In fear that history will repeat,
This love that I’m feeling is too strong to cease
And I’m forced to admit defeat

It’s like history repeating itself,
Only now I’m sure that it’s you
Who has the right answer to my question,
“Would you possibly fall, too?”

Now it is the time for Romeo and Juliet,
Two fates come together
Their journey started out as a mess
But they have now found one another.

Literary (Submission): Fantasy in Reality

I never knew how perfect a single moment could be -
As if every sweet aroma, every glorious sound,
Every fleeting kiss the cold breeze would leave upon my cheek,
Was destined to be right here at this exact time
Presenting themselves before me,
Coaxing me to surrender to their beauty
While the sun hid and retired into the abode only it knows

Everything played out like a dream, a lucid reverie -
And the stars above, my only witnesses
I wandered around, not knowing my destination
Until my eyes discovered another, drowned in deep slumber.
I quickened my pace towards him, fresh with earnest curiosity
But he remained placid, unshaken, undisturbed.

"Look up!" I said to him, as the stars danced above us
But all I could elicit was the sound of steady breathing
So I settled beside him and wallowed, on my own,
At the beauty of that moment, still perfect and flawless,
Without a hint of interest in what would happen after it ends

For hours, we laid there, on the newly cut grass,
Yet not once did his face turn to meet mine
'My fantasy,' I thought, 'is nearing its ending.'
So I savored every last fragment I could grasp.

The sun slowly began to peek out from the horizon
But in truth, I didn't want that moment to end
"When will l see you again?" was all I could ask.

I took his hand, cold from the early morning air
And waited for the universe to snap me out of my trance

But when he opened his eyes and looked at me, I knew I wasn't dreaming.

Literary (Submission): Memory Lane

Writing about you, the one I love, is quite a feat, I must confess. I’ve written a great deal about love and all its intricacies; from its heartwarming innocence down to the gory, unforgivable bits of reality it ensues. Yet when I get the sudden urge to turn you into words - to break you down into literature - nothing comes out.

The words, the punctuations, and the tiny smudges of ink that cling to the end of each letter all become meaningless when stitched together for they prove to be insufficient - lacking in essence. My penmanship worsens as I struggle to fill each page with words worthy enough to describe you and all the things you make my uncertain heart feel. What is it about you that leaves me absolutely tongue-tied?

Is it the soft, gentle tone in your voice that arrests me and holds me captive long after we stop talking? Could it be that athletic build of yours; your perfectly sculpted figure that boasts to none? Is it the way your eyes light up when you talk about the things that excite you; these things that ignite your passions? Or is it perhaps the way you turn vulnerability into something beautiful when others would treat it as something to be ashamed of?

I guess if I were sure about something, it’s the fact that my memories of you are what I long to write most about.

I remember the way you’d gently pull my head towards your shoulder, as if giving me permission to lay there and doze off for a while. I can still feel your arms wrapped around me in an affectionate embrace while you whisper oh-so-few loving words that never fail to tease my senses. I recall the way our hearts would waltz with each other as our favorite ballad plays and how perfectly our love matched the beat of every song.

I go back to the times you said my name; the smooth, unrushed moments each syllable would escape your lips. I don't think I've heard anyone say it better than you.

Every single memory I have of you, each moment that I continuously dwell upon, remains engraved in the deepest corners of my mind. Why should I deprive the world of knowing someone as great as you, the one person who leaves me speechless by saying so little?

So here I am, pen in hand and you on my mind, together with a new-found eagerness to transform you into a masterpiece. It still challenges me to write about you though I’ve come to a point where I crave the blank spaces, untidy erasures, and trips down memory lane - a place I’m beginning to call home.

Literary (Submission): Just One More Thing

A mute man could say more in one day
Than I ever could to make you stay.
Now I am left
With a bleak emptiness,
Watching you amble away.

There's no point in trying to reach
A person who's ready to leave.
So I have to let go
Even when I know
That you're leaving with some part of me.

I'm sorry that I wasn't enough
To convince you to fight for our love.
I know you tried
But you've made up your mind.
It would be cruel to not give you up.

This goodbye does not have to hurt
Because we've nothing to lose nor earn.
Our time wasn't right,
Out of sparks to ignite,
And a love too vague to discern.

I don't blame you for choosing to leave
Because I can't force what should not be.
I'm grateful that you
Did everything you could do
To at least try to be happy, for me.

I wish in the end I could have said
Just one more thing before you left—
The one thing that proves
That my feelings were true
The one thing that now, I can't tell you—

I love you.

Literary (Submission): Lullaby

I'm captivated by you in every sense—
Enraptured by your voice
Void of any pretense

Your eyes sing melodies that allure me so,
Building up emotion
In the perfect tempo

Your heart intrigues me with its steady beating
Unfaltering, secure
Its impact, undying

Your scent, how it soothes! Like music to my ears—
In solace I savor
Your presence, so clear

You are a lullaby in all ways but one
I'm haunted, enchanted
But sleep, I get none.

Literary (Submission): Give Her Time

Her eyes were red, her voice was shaking
Disconnected, distraught, hard to reach
Everyone knew that her heart was aching
Give her time
That's all she needs

Everything around her, as it seems, was different
All her actions governed by regret
But she still craves the love, the spontaneous moments
Give her time
She's not ready, not yet

Don't ask why it hurts her so
Or why she's hard to be around
Because even she doesn't completely know
Give her time
To figure things out and grow

Overwhelmed by how much she wanted to change
The way that everything went
She can't help but continue to take the blame
But give her time…
Give her time to move on.
