Media Center, nakatanggap ng panibagong equipment

Nagbabago na ang mukha ng midya. Kung noon ay umaasa ang mga tao sa nakalimbag na mga balita sa papel, ngayon ay bubuksan na lamang nila ang kani-kanilang mga laptop o cell phone at sa isang haplos at pindot na lamang ng daliri ay makakakalap na sila ng impormasyon.

Ang Media Center (MC), tinatawag noon na Audio-Visual, Print and Broadcast Work Program ng University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS), ay dati pa man ding naglilimbag ng mga balita ng paaralan sa kanilang pahayagan na Ang Aninag. Bilang isang school paper, mayroon itong tungkulin na ipaalam sa mga estudyante ang mga kaganapan sa loob at labas ng kanilang mga pader.

Sa pagbabago ng panahon ay nagbago na rin ang MC. Dati ay naglalathala ito ng diyaryo, magasin, at wall news, pero noong 2011 ay naging online na ang paglalabas ng mga artikulo at akda sa Ang Aninag Online (AAO). Mayroon na ring social media accounts ang MC (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) na nagpapaalam naman sa mga tagasubaybay ng mga lumalabas na materyal sa AAO.

Kasama ng pagbabagong ito ay kinakailangan din ng MC ng mga napapanahong kagamitan.

Kaya’t isang biyaya na naghandog si Ginoong Nonoy Ativo ng UPIS Batch ’86 sa UPIS MC ng camera kalakip ang iba’t ibang paraphernalia sa photography gaya ng high definition lenses at samu’t saring photography books noong Disyembre 18.

Ito ang kaniyang ikalawang pagbalik sa UPIS upang magbigay ng minsan na niyang nagamit na mga libro sa kaniyang propesyon bilang isang photographer.

“…[O]ur students may be able to use it more [...] I think you guys need to be exposed to these things,” pahayag niya nang tanungin sa kaniyang layunin sa pamamahagi. Bukod pa roon, nais niya ring ipahayag na iba pa rin ang pagkatuto sa pagbabasa ng libro. “Nagamit ko talaga sila although may internet na noon, [at saka] sa libro kasi may samples ka na.”

Inaasahan niya na magpakadalubhasa ang lahat ng estudyante sa iba’t ibang anyo ng midya, mapainternet man o tradisyonal na mga libro. “My expectations from you guys is to really immerse yourself in all the media that you are encountering, especially social media. Understand the issues involved. Kasi when you get to college and you start working, you will realize that communication […] is the backbone of a lot of industries.” Dagdag pa niya, “How you communicate, what you communicate, how you stand on issues, your sensitivities, all these things come into play. So siguro magandang [i-practice] niyo na ‘yan habang nandito kayo [sa UPIS]. Itaas ninyo ‘yung quality, ‘yung bar, para maging world class ‘yung outputs [ninyo]. ”

Dating miyembro ng Media Center si G. Ativo na noo’y tinatawag pa nilang AV Print. “I used to submit articles, so hanap kami ng news sa campus, but […] my biggest project back then was the Sulyap ‘86,” kaniyang pahayag. Nagsusulat siya noon para sa Aninag, na dati ay wall news.




Bukod sa mga gamit, nagbahagi rin si G. Ativo ng ilang aral na natutunan niya sa pagiging mag-aaral at miyembro ng school paper staff na nadala niya hanggang sa pagtanda. Ilan dito ang pagpapasa sa takdang oras, pagiging dalubhasa kapwa sa wikang Filipino at Ingles, at ang pagiging organisado.

“Meet your deadlines. Ngayon wala kayong ligtas kasi may Viber group na kayo [...] Pero noong araw, old school, pagagalitan kami, as in sermon.  Kunwari late sa deadline, ang sasabihin, ‘O, ano na namang rason mo ngayon?’” kuwento niya sa kaniyang karanasan noong siya ay nagsusulat pa lamang sa Aninag. “And in a way, dati bad trip, pero now, when I look back, na-appreciate ko. [...] The fact that they were so upset means that they were very passionate about how we do it. [...] Naniniwala ako sa old school, meet your deadlines. Dala-dala ko ‘yan hanggang ngayon.”

Isang malaking bagay ang pagbabahagi ni G. Ativo ng mga equipment sa MC. Bukod sa mas maraming magagamit ang mga mag-aaral ay mas maganda na rin ang kalidad ng mga materyal na kanilang ilalabas. Dagdag pa rito ay ang kaniyang mga paalala at aral para sa mga kasalukuyang estudyante ng UPIS.

Grade 11 students win 2nd place in Greenviro

Rizza Mae Cabrera and Simon Valenzuela, both from the Grade 11 Applied Sciences track placed 2nd in the Greenviro Quiz Bee last November 16 at the Environmental Management Bureau - Air Quality Management Training Center (EMB-AQMTC) Conference, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Compound, Quezon City.

The competition consisted of two categories: Category A for Senior High School and Category B for College. This is the first time that UPIS joined this quiz bee.

"Sobrang nakakakaba po yung competition pero sobrang nakaka-excite din lalo na dahil iba po yung competition na ito [kumpara] sa iba pang [competition] na nasalihan namin. Personally, sobrang nagustuhan ko po yung topic ng quiz bee dahil tungkol siya sa environment," Cabrera shared on her experience in the competition.

The EMB organized the event to promote awareness on the current state of the country’s natural resources and the scientific processes and technology used by different agencies.

iAcademy holds seminar for 12th graders

iAcademy conducted an informational seminar for Grade 12 students of University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) last November 15 at the UPIS AV Room.

They are in search for “rock stars” or exceptional students who have what it takes to become future game changers in the field of business, design, psychology and computing, especially in software engineering.

Ms. Coco Canamo, Admissions Officer, discussed the courses offered at their school and their facilities. She also showed a video featuring their school events.

On the other hand, Mr. AJ Tapia, Senior Manager for Student Affairs, introduced the school’s educational grants, such as the Vanessa L. Tanco (VLT) Scholarship to those who are creative, competitive, and passionate about technology. This scholarship covers the full amount of tuition, miscellaneous, and laboratory fees, with added allowance for books, food, and transportation.
“Our priority for the VLT scholarship program is software engineering but if you think that you are a Rockstar in your field and it is something that you can prove to us, I recommend [that you] send in your [application],” said Tapia.

Spoof Feature: CLASSIFIED: The 7-12 Files

It hasn’t been a long time since we, UPIS students, moved to our new home. Stories from the old building are left behind after transferring to a new site. However, there are still unexplained things here in our new building and a few can’t simply be understood using science.

1. The Guardian of the Books

"Guys it's almost 5, the library is closing." If you're a frequent face in the library, you'll often hear this line. But don't you ever wonder why they close at five, while the school closes at six? You didn't hear it from us, but people say that a vengeful spirit looms inside the library.

It was said that it used to be a guardian, destined to protect the books, but became vengeful after the emergence of the internet. It loved reading, talking about reading, and watching people sinking their faces in books all day. But the internet came about, and almost instantaneously became the primary source of entertainment of the people. Less and less people came to the library to read, but more and more came just to use the computers.

The guardian became silent, resentful, and persistent. He did everything in his power to force people to read, and to renew their love of reading. He tried interrupting with the connection, jamming the printer, and even whispering into the ears of students incantations to make them read. Its power grows as the sky gets darker, and therefore thrives from 5 onwards. There was a dismissed case of a student getting possessed after over-extending her stay at the library. From then on, the school implemented stricter rules regarding time spent in the library.

It was once a loving guardian of the books who wants nothing more than for students to read, but was victimized by modernization.

2. Lorna’s Pen

Lorna used to be a writer that loved to narrate everything she saw and observed. She never lets a single tale pass by untold and she shares every single story. However, one night, she witnessed a gruesome crime and the culprits didn’t want everyone to find out so they chose to silence Lorna once and for all and took her pen and notebook as well. Up to this day, it has been known that Lorna still roams the halls of the UPIS 7-12 building even after the move. And still, her pen remains lost yet not forgotten.

So maybe, you’re wondering where your new pens are? Well now, you can guess who takes them.

3. Don’t Follow Him

A dark hallway. A chilly air. These are just some of the really creepy aspects of that 4th floor hallway. Yet somehow, why do we still tend to pass by there? Maybe because the walk across is shorter than taking the stairs… or maybe, it’s explained by something extremely different?

You see, there used to be a student here and he was, to put it plainly, average. He didn’t have many friends, he wasn’t rich and he definitely wasn’t good-looking. However, he was smart, topping his class in every subject and using his brain. He managed to earn a little money by doing others’ homework and projects for them. He learned to sell his service and to market his “products”. With his intelligence and topnotch skills in persuading, he got regular customers and people would come to him in the hallway, his secret office, for help all the time. Business was healthy however, the authorities found out and he was suspended. Since then, his classmates never found him again and it was believed that he moved to another country or even died.

But in this very hallway, it is believed that his voice can still be heard and his eyes can sometimes be seen by a few students, commanding them to do all sorts of things. And at times, they simply can’t resist.

Now, why do you think the CCTV cameras aren’t facing the hallway itself?


4. Burnt Smell

The school is relatively new, same goes with the facilities. And since they are new, they should still be operational and safe to use, right? But several rooms often located at the third floor have this eerie burning smell. Someone will randomly smell it, then another, and another, until every nostril is filled with the suffocating aroma. Almost always, we blame the fans or the lights for this burning smell, and as we hastily turn them off, the tension in the room settles, along with the dissipation of the toxic fumes. Then again, the school is relatively new. Only a few years have passed since its erection, but the burning smell remains constant. They say, it’s not the fan, the lights, or anything--

It’s the vengeful spirits.

5. Rooftop Trickster

If you’re one of the more adventurous students in school, you probably know that our building has a rooftop. The view there is reportedly breathtaking, the breeze is cool, and you can see the Katipunan Avenue clearly. But despite these feats, we are not allowed to step foot on the rooftop. The reason the school uses is always safety. It’s dangerous, and there are no adults around to supervise. But do you know the real reason as to why we’re not allowed to explore there?
Curious students who have tried said that there’s a mysterious vibe they feel not on the rooftop, but on the way there. If you go to the 4th floor, you can see a ladder near the entrance from the ramp. They say that as they climb to the top, there’s a chilly feeling on their backs, as if they were giving someone a piggyback ride. These students had lookouts to signal them if a teacher or a staff is coming. One of them saw a black figure looming over his friends. He thought it was just their shadows, but to his surprise it went against the light. He screamed and ran, while his classmates on top of the ladder frantically went down thereafter.

After the incident, no one dared to climb up to the rooftop again. They all feared the trickster spirit that “guards” the rooftop. And I think we all should too. Who knows what prank he’ll try next.


6. The Deadly Hollows

Do you ever wonder where the rats and frogs in biology classes go after they’re “used”? Why do they magically disappear right after students cut them up and study their anatomy?

Try knocking on the walls of the building. Hear the full echoes and how the walls are built firmly. However, wait, there’s this weird spot, a hollow one. You might wonder, why so?

Well, we’re here to answer both of your questions. These hollow spots are actually tiny coffins for these dead animals. It all started when the administration did not know what to do with the carcasses. They tried burying them but it was too much of a hassle. They tried burning them but it wasn’t environmental friendly. They even tried giving the dead bodies away but no one would take them. And eventually, this solution was brought up and ended up being a double benefit- the school saves space and gets rid of the corpses at the same time.

Just don’t let the smell (and the fact that our walls are mini-tombs) distract you.

It may be true that we are currently traversing the path of modernization, but we must never forget that not everything can be proven by science, and not everything you see is what they seem to be. From the house chores to working even on weekends, wipe her to-do-list clean and complete it yourself. A day of doing your mother’s work won't hurt, just think of all the days she had gone through doing it for you.

Write the day-off coupon on a piece of paper or print it out. You can use a template that’s available online or make one yourself to come up with something more special, adding in some personal touches. Included in this day-off coupon is an all-day “pass” from all the chores at home! Nothing will make your mother feel more appreciated and loved.

2. A hefty breakfast

Let's face it, everybody loves a warm and hefty breakfast. Wake up early to cook her favorite breakfast omelette, fluffy pancakes, bacon, waffles, champorado, sinangag at tuyo and many more! Search up some simple breakfast recipes and choose your mom’s most favorite. Don't forget the drinks! Coffee, tea, orange juice, or whatever she likes. Set it up on the table, or maybe even add some flowers or notes to the side to brighten up her morning. If she isn’t the type of person to get up right after she wakes up, don’t worry. Make her a breakfast in bed which will totally make her morning better.

Make sure to set-up your alarm to ensure that you'll have enough time to prepare in the morning, or prepare it the night before to make cooking easy as pie.

3. Mother’s Day Kit

Give her a Mother’s Day Kit full of items assembled and handpicked by you. Try to make it suitable for your mom by considering her interests and hobbies and listening to her little rants where you can get some ideas about what she needs.

One example is a relaxation kit. Include face masks and other self-care products, so that she won't forget to pamper and make time for herself. You can also include a short book, one that you think she'll like, or a scented candle to brighten up the ambiance.

There are many other kits to choose from, like stress-reliever kits, and for an even more meaningful one, the ba-kit! It’s a jar full of reasons why you love your Mother, and why you’re thankful for her. There are many choices, and you just have to make one you think will best suit and help her.

4. The usual Mother's Day card

Yes, the usual, but cards made from scratch filled with love can never go wrong. If you want a creative and colorful gift that will surely make your mother smile, gather all your art materials and release your inner Picasso. Draw pictures and symbols with colors that will represent what you're trying to express, from the fun memories you had to the embarrassing moments that made everyone laugh.

If you’re not that good in the art department, simply write the words you want to say, whether it's by pen and paper or encoded and printed. What matters is what's on the inside, and whatever message you're trying to send will surely make its way to your mother.

5. Spoken word

Profess your undying love to your mommy by reciting a heartfelt poem that you made for her. Think of all the things you're sorry and thankful for. Don't worry if it‘s not on Shakespeare's level, as long as it's from the heart, your Mother will appreciate it deeply. If you're in tune with your musical side, you can also try composing a song for her. Make it as personal as possible, so that she can hear the words you can never say, but only sing.

Through whatever style or theme you choose to do, make sure that 100% of what you’re going to say is from the bottom of your heart.


This Mother’s Day, give her one of these simple gestures or come up with your own personal gimmick. But then again, the very best gift to give her this Mother’s Day is your love. Oftentimes, we forget to tell them how grateful we are due to our busy schedule, but we can always find time to exert effort and show them the love that mothers truly deserve.

First graders bag first place at MMC



Grade 1 students Ralfh Mantaring, Hezekiah Sagayaga, and Xian Yu claimed the first prize in the Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge Regional Finals (MMC) on March 10 at Ramon Magsaysay High School Manila.

The trio went through several team competitions before bagging 1st prize at the regionals. They competed first in the Area Finals where they won 1st place, automatically granting them a spot at the Sectoral Finals. They placed 2nd at the Sectoral Finals, but due to their high scores, they were allowed to join the Regionals where they were hailed champions.

Prof. Luzviminda Tan the group’s adviser, was very happy and proud of the team’s effort. “Masaya and proud ako sa kanila dahil ‘di lang naman pagod ko ‘yun, isa itong group effort na pinaghirapan ng lahat,” she explained.

Ninth graders Lester Amurao, Marius Barcenas, and Jammy Mapa also participated in the MMC but did not make it to the finals.

For individual championships, Sagayaga placed 1st at the Regional Finals while Barcenas placed 10th.

The MMC aims to awaken greater interest in Mathematics among public and private elementary and high school students. It also aims to encourage mastery of basic mathematical skills and discover mathematical talents in the country.//by Josh Santos and Geraldine Tingco

Feature: The S.I.N.G.L.E.S. Guide to Surviving the UP Fair



Ah yes, it's the month of love or as netizens call it, Feb-ibig. It’s that month again when couples take each other out on dates, give each other gifts and enjoy each other’s company. And it’s also the month of UP's most anticipated annual event: the UP Fair, a 5-day concert series filled with local bands, delicious food, tons of amenities, and of course, advocacies.

To enjoy such an event, one might think that having a date with you is a must. Someone to hold, to love and to spend the beautiful night with-- Come on guys, it’s 2018! We’re all strong and independent human beings who can have twice the fun with less the crowd! But if you’re still not convinced and you still think that you can only enjoy the fair with a partner, here is a list of things you can do without having to stress yourself over some non-existent significant other.

The first thing you’d have to put in mind when attending the UP Fair is that having a significant other is not a prerequisite in enjoying the fair. Why not go out with friends? After all, two’s a company, three’s a crowd and five’s a party!

Gather all your single friends and make the UP Fair your ultimate group date. Being single can be sad and intimidating, but being single with friends is more fun, trust us. Enjoying the fair with friends gives you more freedom to spend your money and time since you don’t have to worry about another person. Just stick together and keep your phones on so you won’t leave anyone behind. We wouldn’t want you to be losing a friend in the middle of enjoying the fair.

The UP Fair is held at the Sunken Garden; a 5-hectare piece of lowered land! The bands aren’t the only highlight of the fair because there are tons of activities to choose from and a lot of concessionaires to eat at.

By simply walking around (or sitting down on the grass), you get to witness the genuine reactions of people. The face of despair (or fear) they show at the rides, the face of awe as people hear their favorite bands, or the face of happiness as couples enjoy each other’s company. Also, your happy face knowing that there are lots of buy-1-take-1 food promos for couples but you’re single so more food for you!

But be careful of random mud puddles and cables, we wouldn’t want you to trip or to ruin your favorite shoes just because you got lost in the sights.

The rides at the UP Fair may be few (There are only 4!) but your amusement will surely be limitless. With prices that range from 60 to 70 pesos, the attractions will surely be worth your while.

If your heart can only take so much, we suggest you ride the Ferris Wheel first since it is relatively slower than the others. But if you’d like a little more excitement or if you’re more of an adrenaline junkie, ride the Octopus with a friend (a ride that swivels carts in the air). If you’d want to feel like you’re falling or you just want to view the scene from up high with much more speed than the Ferris Wheel, try the Viking (a pirate boat replica that swings the riders up high). And if you would want to reminisce your favorite playground equipment with more thrill, ride the Swinger instead.

Just remember, never eat an hour before riding one of these. We want you to enjoy the rides as mess-free as possible!

If rides are not right up your alley, you can try the milder and less dangerous alternative: the perya or carnival games. A variety of booths are scattered all over the place but most are usually found near the rides. You could try hurling balls at cans, throwing darts at balloons, tossing rings and flinging coins to win small prizes.

At a reasonable price, you could both marvel at the simple joy of being able to shoot and hit your target and win something along the way. But be cautious of spending too much. Some booths require you to play consecutive games for a certain prize. Remember that you are playing to have fun, not to win a large (but rather, useless) stuffed toy.

The UP Fair is not just all about the bands and the rides. It’s also a good place to fulfill your foodtrip cravings.

From the famous UP street food stalls to cheap pizza-pasta combos (Only 99 pesos for both!), your money is surely going to be spent well and your stomach will end up extremely satisfied.

But remember, be wary of the food choices you’re going to make. Some are worth their price but some are just plain rip-offs. Pick the stalls with more people since they tend to be the good ones and therefore, attract more customers.

The main reason why the UP Fair is always the most popular event to be held within the campus is because of its impressive lineup. With underrated college groups like The Ridleys and STLO to top-notch local bands like Silent Sanctuary and Sponge Cola, the UP Fair has them all.

And whether you know the band or not, don’t hesitate to let loose and have fun. Dance along to the incredible guitar riffs, powerful drum beats and amazing vocals.

To fully experience the concert as a whole, it is a more enjoyable option to be near the stage as much as possible. But if you do decide to dive right into the mosh pit (n. the area in front of a concert stage), don’t forget to bring along a willing friend. It’s easy to get lost in the crowd so it’s a good idea to have a familiar face with you.

Just like listening to your favorite band on repeat, you close your eyes, memorizing the lyrics, singing along to the tune, tapping your foot, doing air guitar solos and air drums-- You don’t notice it, but you close your eyes, and you savor the moment.

Now imagine watching your favorite band live, breathing the same air as them and finally, hearing them perform live. What do you do? If you answered take a picture, you’re missing out on a lot, and maybe you need to reevaluate your priorities. What you need to do, is raise your hands, take a deep breath, and sing your heart out, sing to your heart’s content, sing like nobody’s listening, and sing until your lungs give out! Because times like these don’t need to be photographed. These eventful moments of your life are ingrained in your heart and photographed in your mind. This kind of photograph is what matters the most; making yourself happy without the need to showcase it to the world. Savor the moment, live in the moment.

Being alone and single during the most couple-filled event in UP may make you feel lonely, but with good friends and good food, and the best bands serenading you, being single won’t matter anymore. Remember to just have a fun time with your friends, explore the place, enjoy the music and most importantly, revel in your “single-ness” and the UP Fair will surely be one of the best events you’ve ever attended in your life.//by Josh Santos and Roan Ticman
