Literary (Competition): “Hope”





No one loves you
There’s nothing you can do
Everybody hates you
And there’s nothing you can do

You don’t accept failures
You have a big pride
Why can’t you just let it slide?

Those are the letters that rains inside
That I don’t want to abide
I’m not deft nor deaf
But I’m a tree that’s strong
Because I know they’re wrong

They know that part of me was winter
And part of me was spring

I won’t let them win the war
Because I didn’t fight
I know I’m something
That’s why they told me I’m nothing

Whatever they do I won’t mind
I’ll stay what I am
I’ll stay kind

I just hope someday the swords and knives around me
Will go away
Even though there’s a tiny hope
I’ll still fight and
The sun can shine on me again

Even though that language stabs me
There is a tiny hope between them
Though my heart is brittle
At least I know I’ll fight though the chances are little

Whatever it takes
I won’t mind
Whatever it takes

A ray of light
A hope of might
To believe in someone
Rather than dreaming with no one

A little candle
Lightbulbs of bundle
Just one would be enough
When life is too rough

A shoulder to cry on
A motivation to move on
Dreams to encourage
And a life to live in rage

A book to read in
A person to believe in
A quote to be inspired
When you really want to hide

To hide below a stone
To hide the soul of your own
But in your heart you know
Your life can change in a single blow

Just a ray of light
Just a hope of might
You want to change
And unlock your own cage

There you are right there
There’s nothing to fear
There’s no journey you’ll go through alone
Because someone’s gonna be with you all along.

Summer is fun
Because school is done
All your homework is gone
Now you can play in the sun

Summer is hot,
Yes, its true
At least there is no test
That needs some review!

What causes the heat?
What can’t the heat beat?
Nothing that I know of,
Nothing in the street

Let me ask my friend,
My friend until the end
Surely she will know,
Because she is a pro

Her answer surprised me
It stung like a bee
But not in a bad way
She just said sun ray

Why haven’t I thought of it before
Of course, it’s the sun ray
I’m happy if it would stay
So that there would be more time to play

Oh Mr. Sun, Mr. Sun
Can we play, can we play?
Under the heat of your ray

If you answer yes,
I will play later
Because I have to refresh
With a cold glass of water

The rays of the sunlight
Are such beautiful sights
It’s something that is queer
Stronger than a huge chandelier

There are many types of rays
Such as seeing your beautiful face
It always makes me glad
And that feels rad

I wanted to see
The sunlight’s glee
Without any hesitation
To see if it’s just a complicated imagination

Without any rays
People will not be able to face
Any sight of happiness
That’s why rays are the best

Literary (Submission): Liham Para Kay Mama




Dear Mama,

Naaalala ko pa po noon, nilulutuan mo ako ng pagkain kasi sabi mo ayaw mong nagugutom ako. Ang aga-aga n’yo pong gumigising para lang ipaghanda ako ng makakain ko sa tanghalian. Tinetext n’yo pa po ako kung kumain na ba ako, nakatulog ba ako nang maayos kagabi, kamusta ang araw ko, napagod ba ako, at marami pang iba.

Naalala ko pati ang mga pagsuway ko sa utos n’yo at pagkukunwaring tulog kasi tinatamad ako. Ang mga away natin na mababaw lang naman pero lumalaki pa rin. Kabilang na rin ‘yung mga bonding natin lalo na noong bata pa ako. Naaalala n’yo pa po ba noong ang taas-taas ng nakuha kong grado kaya pumunta tayo agad sa SM para bilhin ‘yung laruang gusto ko? Naaalala niyo rin po ba noong pupunta ako sa birthday ng kaibigan ko at wala akong maisuot na damit kaya sinamahan n’yo ako kahit pagod ka?

At naaalala ko pa rin kung paano n’yo ako iniwan, Mama. Naaalala ko pa rin kung paano n’yo hinawakan sa huling pagkakataon ang aking mga kamay, tulad noong bata pa ako. Naaalala n’yo ba, Mama?

Mama, miss na po kita. Namimiss ko na kung paano mo bigyan ng liwanag ang mundo kong madilim. Namimiss ko na kung paano mo ako gisingin tuwing sumisikat ang araw. Ang matamis mong boses na bumubungad sa akin sa umaga para sabihing handa na ang almusal. Mama, handa po akong isuko ang lahat ng mayroon ako ngayon, bumalik ka lang po ulit.

Pasensya na po kung palagi akong nagkukulong sa kwarto at hindi ko kayo gaano nakakasama. Pasensya na po kung madalas akong busy kaya minsan hindi ko na kayo nasasamahan sa mga lakad niyo. Pasensya na po kung pasaway po akong anak minsan. Mama, sana mabasa mo po ito. Di bale, iipunin ko naman po lahat ng liham sa isang bote para kapag nagkita tayo ulit, maibibigay ko na po sa iyo.

Mahal na mahal po kita, Mama.

Stars come in all sorts of colors
But none has shone as brightly as you
With your green rays of starlight
You’ve shown me new perspectives, new hues
You told me that it’s okay to love
And it wasn’t good if I kept it all in
You taught me and helped me in so many ways
For me to list it all down, I don’t know where to begin
But oh, green star in the sky
I saw your brightness flicker
For a split-second, I felt
Your bright glow grow a little dimmer
And as fast as it came, it glowed right back
To the normal shine you give

That was enough for us to worry, I believe
We talked to you about it

Several holes on the roof of a church

The altar boys joked that they let the rays of Heavens in.

Beneath them buckets to catch rainfall.
Beneath them the sounds of worship through gritted teeth.

Several holes in the divider of a confession.

The father said they let God in, for your sins should not be kept in your heart.

Beneath the confession a bigger sin lies,
Beneath is the darkness surrounding the light.

Literary: It was such a gloomy day




I am walking alone
Under the rain with my umbrella
Sad music is playing on my earphones
Puddles are everywhere

It is such a gloomy day

I feel like locking myself in my room
Lights out, cold weather
Snuggling with thick blankets
When will the sun shine for me?

It is such a gloomy day

Then you went under my umbrella
Sad music stopped playing
The rain followed suit
The bright sun came up

Is it still a gloomy day?

There I saw you
My sunshine on a rainy day
And there you smiled
As the sun rays started to appear

It isn’t a gloomy day after all

Rest,
As though you’ve walked a million miles
Through valleys and forests and city streets
Lie down and rest your aching feet.

Concerning existence in life after being dead

As though you’ve battled the world’s warriors
Each carrying swords and clubs and axes

I am Daylight
I am the brightest rays
My warmth heals
My light, surreal

Daylight, am I?
I burned using the brightest rays
My heat causes suffering
My light, blinding

Daylight, I am not
I no longer give brightness
My fire no longer burns
My light, now dim

My light, solemn
My ice freezes the soul
I am the dimmest ray
What am I?

My light, bright against the dark
My wind cools the earth
I am a powerful ray
Am I this?

My light, vanguard in the black
My night calms the mind
I am the ray I am

Eight rays of the sun,
Eight provinces who did what had to be done,
To topple those who made us cower,
To fight the colonial power.

Sparks of civil dissent
Embers of civil discontent
Flames of retribution
Blaze of revolution

Revolution immortalized,
In blue, red, and white fossilized,
Yellow sun and stars,
Commemorate the war.

Lest we forget why we fought,
And sacrifice would have been for naught,
Look to the flag and recall,
The values it should install.

Light
after light
after light.

All the stars
line up
And then slowly,
slowly,
start to go around in circles,
frantically,
excitedly,
orbiting around you.

They move closer,
and closer,
and closer.
And the closer that they get,
the stronger your pull becomes.

You pull them in,
one by one,
slowly,
surely.

All these stars,
these lights,
all about you
make you look as if you
glow,
a bright yellow light,
full of warmth,
full of life.

It takes a second look,
or maybe much,
much more than that,
to see
to really see
what you actually are.

You see,
my dear,
you are not a star.

You are
but a void.

Empty
of life.
Devoid of any real feeling.

Yet you crave,
And you lust,
for the brightness
and the warmth
Of the everglowing light.

And so you pull them in,
One by one,
slowly,
surely.

All these stars,
these lights
all about you,
make you look as if you
glow.

It keeps
your vacuum of darkness,
unspoken of.
Your hollowness,
unknown.

And so,
you keep
on pulling
all of them in
one by one
to use their light,
and make it look like your own.

Yet,
my dear,
this still does not
make you a star.
You are not a star.

No,
you no longer are.

Somewhere deep inside the cove
Far beyond the treasure trove
Lies my final offering
To you who held my everything

Here lies, and so it says
The letter to which we part ways
Once, upon a time
I felt in ways I found divine

The butterflies flourished and fluttered
Every word was sweetly uttered
And as hastily as you had left
Ever slowly us as one had cleft

On our final minute
I wish to say with much regret
That upon the final note
I shall speak of what I wrote

I said it once, fresh with pain
But this time I swear it’s appertain
Once again my darling,
Oblige me once more before our parting

In truth,
I loved you.
Deeply truly,
Somewhere in me, I still do

The hidden smile I keep from you
Is one known only by a few
It’s tender and bitter
Wrought with an unshed tear

It pains me to say
That even now, I wonder to this very day

Literary: HELP ME, I’M STUCK IN A CAVE!!!




I’ve been stuck in a cave
for quite a while...OH NO!
So can anyone please save
me and end my sorrow?

Now, now, let’s not panic.
In a cave, there's always an opening.
And my situation isn’t that drastic.
It’s not like the cave walls are shrinking…

Then it did shrink…

Ahhhh, what is this?
It's not like there are booby traps.
This cave is acting amiss,
Because only temples shrink and collapse…

Then I guess I better… RUNNN!!!

And so I ran as far as I could.
Into the deep, deep darkness,
Screaming hysterically like an actress.
But still… all was good.

Then I fell...

Then it hit me!
(A rocky wall)

Then I passed out…

As I woke up with a bump on my head.
I started to realize...
That I’m better off dead.
Oh, what a sad demise!

Then I wept…

I thought about my grim end,
And how the insects would feed on my corpse.

Then suddenly…

A surge of light suddenly beamed.
From up above the rocky ceiling
Of course at first, I was scared and screamed.
But out of nowhere, a hand appeared.

Then it reached it out to me…

Without anything else to do.
I held the hand
And finally I…

Here it comes,

The sun is setting
Inside my head

I lay down,
Do not weep
I've made my bed
It’s time to sleep

Daylight fades
The final golden glow
You stand up
It’s about time to go

There’s no loss
Or so you hope

As I’m on my final rope
