Literary: Be You

A modern way to paint
Where your face is the canvas.
A palette of colorful make-up
You use to cover your natural beauty
To hide its innocence and purity,
To conceal the flaws they use against you.

A phony beauty pageant
Where you walk like a runway model.
But little do they know,
Behind that perfect body
Is a starving, suffering woman
Trying to fit into society’s definition of beauty

A bluff act of camaraderie
Where you show your stagy, fake self
Around a conceited circle of friends
Picking and browbeating on others
To be part of the popular clique.
To be accepted for who you’re not.

A false video game
Where you are the star
You let others have control over you
Because you think what they say is right.
Disregarding what you really want
To be far from someone you once knew.

Why would you want to change yourself
When you’ve got something that they don’t?
You’re unique, special in your own way
And that’s something they can’t take away.

Why would you try to be someone else?
When your flaws and weaknesses make you stand out
Not because they define you
But because you can overcome them.

So, it’s time
To put that maquillage off
Your face is too beautiful
To cover with make-up colorettes

It’s time
To gain a few pounds
Your body is precious
So, you better take care of it.

It’s time
To let go of that untidy, crazy you
You are truly special
So be proud of it.

It’s time
To start to make a change
You are one of a kind
So don’t be ashamed of just being you
