A group of UPIS Grade 11 students snagged second runner-up honors in The 2017 Youth SDG Summit which concluded last February 22 at the Enderun Colleges in Taguig.

Hillary Fajutagana, Carlos Laderas, Hannah Manalo, and Rachel Siringan’s entry entitled Sa Pagkamulat garnered 85.4% to finish behind Tila and The Ripple Effect, both Miriam College entries.

“We wanted to show the youth that we are all perpetrators of the changing climate and the degradation of life on land and below water. But this doesn't mean we can't do anything about it. We have time, but so very little of it which is why we, the youth, must take action. It's not just for us but for the billions of others out there and the next generations to come,” shared Hillary Fajutagana on the core message of their entry.

Sa Pagkamulat is narrated through a reverse poem and a stop-motion animation video that tells how hope for this dying world is in the hands of everyone, especially the youth. The video also takes pride in using zero new paper throughout its production.

The 2017 Youth SDG Summit was launched to develop public engagement programs for SDG education and commitment based on the key principles of diligence, self-help, and cooperation. It was open to senior high school students who were asked to create social media campaigns in video format.

Two other entries from UPIS also made it to the finals—Lakbay by Gyles Abac, Adrian Bornilla, Jomer Dula, and Jerick Marquez and Kabataang Superhero by Ernest Arceo, Dani de Leon, Denice Palicte, and Rene Rollon II. Meanwhile, Kulay ng Kabataan by Deborah Argayosa, Jaihra Bagaoisan, Aichel Crisostomo, and Marianne Sasing was one of the Top 20 semi-finalists.

The finalists contended in the summit’s competition proper wherein they were interviewed by a panel of judges after presenting their video to the audience. Other activities in the summit included talks by notable figures involved in the UN SDGs such as Ms. Mariana Silva of the Youth for Global Goals and performances by the Adrinka Lumad Djembe Community.
