When the second semester of the school year started, Grade 11 students were introduced to work programs as part of the K-12 Curriculum. The three academic tracks, namely, Business and Entrepreneurship, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Applied Sciences and Engineering each have their own work programs. Check them out so that you can decide what to take up in the future!

Business and Entrepreneurship

In the Entrepreneurship work program of the Business and Entrepreneurship track, the students are taught skills in planning, budgeting, staff management, marketing, and sales. This is to prepare them for the actual business workplace. They are required to complete service hours either in the high school or elementary canteens. They are to promote and sell products which are usually snacks and drinks. They have three main responsibilities. First is to monitor the inventory and check what items are still left and the quantity of these items. Second is to assign who will be in-charge of the food preparation, sales, finance and clean up. Lastly, they construct the budget plan where they keep track of the sales, expenses, profit and total cash on hand. If you are a business-minded type of person, you should definitely consider taking up this track!

Social Sciences and Humanities

Are you passionate about reading and writing? If you are, then you would enjoy this work program! They manage the Media Center (MC) which is the audio-visual, print, and broadcast work program of the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS). They handle the official school publications like Ang Aninag and Ang Aninag Online, where they are responsible for the dissemination of information relevant to the school and its stakeholders. Ang Aninag Online alternates between publishing literary articles and news, sports, opinion, and feature articles weekly. Annually, they also publish Ang Aninag, the printed version of the school newspaper. They are also in change of the layout, write-ups, and the publishing of Sulyap, the graduating batch’s yearbook. Though it primarily aims to introduce the students to life in print and broadcast media, this work program sharpens not only their writing and broadcasting skills but also their practical life skills. Interesting? If you think so, be prepared for one fun chapter in your life if you decide to take up Social Sciences and Humanities!

Applied Sciences and Engineering

If you’re into exciting experiments, rocks, and animals, this is for you! Students in this track take the Applied Science and Technology work program, also known as the Science Learning Center (SLC). It prepares students interested in science to become future educators, researchers, and inventors. They are expected to develop scientific attitudes and gain more experience in experimental research by attending workshops and seminars. They are required to complete the Science Learning Project which includes instructional planning and demo teaching. In this activity, they need to design and implement an instructional plan for a specific science lesson. Other activities include presenting a scientific paper in a research colloquium and doing laboratory tours. If you want to be a scientist, an engineer, an architect, or take up anything science-related, this will be one out-of-the-world experience for you!

Life in Grade 11 will be like experiencing the "real world" while still in the comfort zone of your school. You get to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. If you are an aspiring businessman, writer or scientist this will be the beginning of your journey! It does not end in high school; it starts here! //by Layla Wadi
