The UPISGVT had a rough start to their UAAP Season 80 campaign as they faced the top 2 teams last season last September 9 and September 11 at the FilOIl Flying V Centre.
The girls lost their first game to the University of Santo Tomas Little Tigresses in straight sets, 25-14, 25-10, 25-8. The UPIS GVT continued to struggle with jitters as they suffered another 3-set loss against 3-peat champions National University Girls’ Volleyball Team (NUGVT). But the girls vowed to show better results in their next games.
“Sa tingin ko po, nagkulang kami sa lakas ng loob,” said libero Bianca Morales. “Pwede pa kaming mag-improve sa mindset namin.”
Meanwhile, the UPISBVT also struggled in their first game, as they faltered against DLSZ losing 3 straight sets, 25-11, 25-16, 25-19. Middle blocker Ron Castro and veteran setter Dex Daguman showed great chemistry as they lead the team in offense.
The boys also had a slow start in their next game versus the Ateneo Blue Eaglets. They dropped the first set, 18-25, and engaged in a head-to-head battle in the second set but due the BVT’s attack errors the Eaglets also got the second set win, 21-25. The boys came from behind in the third set, 25-23, led by veteran Derick Urgena but lost the fourth set and consequently the game, 21-25.
The UPISBVT finally overcame their nerves and started the first set head-to-head against last season’s third placers, UE Red Warriors. They started strong with their solid defense, but gave away the set to UE’s service ace run that continued to the next set, giving the UPIS BVT their third loss, 25-21, 25-8, 25-9.
The UPISBVT endured another straight-set loss today against the FEU Baby Tamaraws, 25-14, 25-13, 25-13.
