Ranking 6th last season, the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Table Tennis Teams pushed their way through their opening games this Season 80 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) last September 23 and 24 at the University of the Philippines Gym.
On the first day of the tournament, the UPIS Boys’ Table Tennis Team pushed the Adamson Baby Falcons to their limits, with last year’s Rookie of the Year Jazper Pacis snatching a game against the Baby Falcon’s Deo Ramos, but failed to surpass them. Rookie Zire Salazar and doubles tandem Kobe Rivera and Alex Yangco also managed close fights but failed to take the win.
The first day ended with a 0-2 win-loss record as the Junior Maroon Paddlers also lost to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tiger Cubs.
Led by Pacis, Salazar, and senior Blade Saliva, the team fought back during the second day of the tournament by winning, 3-2, against the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) juniors in the singles division.
After their win, they battled against the De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) Junior Archers, but they were steadfast and defeated the Junior Maroons.
“Hindi man kami nanalo sa doubles, proud pa rin ako sa game namin [ni Jerson Quetua] sa La Salle kasi naka-set kami,” Senior Blade Saliva shares gladly. “Given na rookie yung ka-doubles ko, si Jerson, lumaban pa rin kami sa La Salle,” he adds.
Meanwhile, the UPIS Girls’ Table Tennis Team was defeated in their first few games versus UST, DLSZ, the University of the East (UE), and ADMU, respectively.
UPIS Table Tennis Team Coach Melvin Lava says that the girls’ skills are up to par as they have been training hard and have done well in tune ups, but they fail in having the right mindset.
“Mas maging seryoso sa training at baguhin yung mindset,” says Senior Ana Suiza when asked about what they can do to improve their current campaign. “Dapat di kami ma-discourage sa current standing kasi marami pang games at marami pang pagkakataon na bumawi,” she adds.
Girls’ team rookie Sasha Reyes also shares the same sentiments. “[Kailangan pa po ng] more effort siguro and more heart while playing.”
The UPIS Table Tennis Teams still hold their heads up high despite their losses and aims to rise up the ranks this season. Support them in their upcoming games on September 28 against UE for the boys and Adamson for the girls. On September 30, the boys will go against NU while the girls will start their second round. All events will be held at the UP Gym. //by Maica Cabrera, Julian Taloma, Hannah Manalo
