Literary (Submission): The Night at a Carnival

The moon shining bright and full
The carnival exuberant and ever so joyful
With elephants befriending lions
And little fairy-like acrobats leaping and zooming across tightropes
As if they were walking on solid ground

Majestic beings with heavenly voices
Voices seemingly lullabies covering all the noises
With their tails for feet
And scales for skin
Oh, what beings, Oh, so majestic

She roams around
And stumbles upon

Bright lights among mirrors
Reflections in caricatures
Curiosity surrounds
Innocence.
She turns to a corner and then sees herself
Wide
Wavy
Tall
Small.
Each distortion extreme
Yet strangely familiar

She escapes.
A future that she failed to foresee

She got old

Long gone are elephants befriending lions
The fairy-like acrobats have gotten frail
With hints of hesitation
Perspiring on their foreheads

What were once majestic beings
Traded glimmering tails for feeble feet
Stripped their scales for wrinkly skin
Denuded their years of facade
Murmuring, silently humming
Lullabies
Amidst the deafening silence

Around her now

Twisted scenes, broken pictures
Twirling haunted carousel rides
Blood-stained mirrors taunting, thrashing
Cackling fun house promises
Telling crystal ball fortunes reeking of failure

Wandering into the open
She is embraced by
Reality
