Alpas: Kalayaan at pananagutan

Freedom and accountability.

This was the theme of the annual UPIS Leadership Camp (LC) held on October 19 and 20, 2019 at the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS).

Organized by the Pamunuan ng Kamag-aral (pKA) of both 3-6 and 7-10 together with their advisers, Mr. Edwin Conel and Ms. Diana Caluag, Alpas served as the finale of the three-year-long camp series “ISKOre Values.”

PKA 7-12 president, Danie Cabrera, found the theme very relevant to society today--“Nakakatuwa rin po lalo na sa temang ito, na Alpas: Kalayaan at Pananagutan ay naging conclusion sa ISKOre Values, dahil sa social relevancy rin po nito… sa sarili at pati po sa bansa mismo.”

Two representative officers from each student organization and one from each varsity team from Grades 2 to 10 attended the camp.

Two Kamag-aral General Assemblies were held-- one for elementary campers and another for high school campers. The latter body discussed concerns regarding the school rules in line with the pKA’s present plans to update them.

Included in the discussion were the rules commonly violated, suggested rules to be added to the Student Handbook, and proposed revisions and updates regarding old rules. Some of the concerns raised were the unclear definition of Public Display of Affection, the possibility of provisions in the School Uniform section to limit the right of students to express themselves through their physical appearance, and the lack of implementation of rules.

Campers also plotted activities of their respective organizations in the Calendar of Activities.

Talks were held including two plenary sessions on Freedom and Self-expression and freedom of speech and social media with speakers Ms. Samantha Eala and Ms. Allison Gray Atis, respectively. There were also three parallel sessions for grades 2-6 and three other for grades 7-10 where important issues namely, Gender Sensitivity, Mental Health, Data Privacy (for grades 7-10), and Bullying (for grades 3-6) were discussed.

Campers were also clustered into 10 groups and engaged in various activities. They had a case competition wherein each group was given a situation to which they must propose a solution. Judges were Mr. Molave Macapagal, Ms. Hannah Manalo, and Mr. Christian Sarabia.

They also participated in team building activities which consisted of 10 stations and in the Socials Night where Ms. Michell Molinyawe, Ms. Ena Sy, and Ms. Kate Hipolito judged each group’s presentations during the Rampa which consisted of a talent and question-and-answer portion.

To close the camp, the winners of the case competition, the best group, the best campers, and the early bird were awarded. Group 6 championed in the case competition, followed by group 8 and then, by group 10. Group 6 was also awarded Best Group. The Best Camper awards were given to Uno Macadaan from 3-6 and Rofert Ramos from 7-10. Jade Regalado was given the Early Bird award. Campers were also awarded certificates of participation.

“I’m really happy that it ended on a really memorable note,” Cabrera shared. “Super fun and [I’m] really proud of this year’s Leadership Camp!” //by Lester Amurao and Rain Tiangco
