The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Administration and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Board are taking additional safety measures to prevent the spread of the dengue virus in UPIS.

The Anti-Dengue program aims to “search and destroy the dengue mosquitoes in the school premises” as stated in a letter recently released by the PTA Board on October 4, 2019.

Additional electric mosquito zappers have been installed by the school in the K-2, 3-6, and 7-12 buildings.

Besides this, a Spray Misting by Barangay Personnel was finished last October 8, 2019. Throughout the previous week, students were asked to evacuate the school directly after classes to lessen mosquito and leftover insecticide exposure.

A Parents’ Brigada Clean-up Drive will be hosted on October 19, 2019. Efforts with the Campus Maintenance Office (CMO), including roof gutter clean-up and tree-pruning, are also being coordinated.

Along with these, a series of health-related seminars for parents will be held to spread awareness on dengue and other diseases.

“Since dengue is a public health concern, interventions and anti-dengue programs should also be a community effort,” PTA President Annamor Mapa adds. “The UPIS Administration and the PTA Board have been working hand in hand to have this program in place whole [sic] year round. Let us all work together for a dengue-free community.”

The PTA and the Administration also advise parents to practice the Department of Health’s (DOH) 4S strategy against dengue to prevent the onset of the disease among the students. This includes searching and destroying mosquito-breeding areas, employing self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, and supporting fogging and spraying.
