behind the scenes,

BTS 2016: The Promise of the Future

To say that this has been a challenging publishing year is an understatement.

In the beginning it was uncertain. Ma'am Wena and I were not sure if we could pull off the usual weekly publishing (pub) nights without an editorial board and with a staff that has not yet been trained in anything Journalism.

But I guess the easiest part of this pub year was deciding that we were keeping Media Center and Ang Aninag Online up and running, even if we'd have to do triple, sometimes, quadruple the work.

We decided on biweekly themed pubs with mostly literary articles while the staff members are still being given training on the more technical aspects--newswriting, editorial, and layouting, among others.

Why? For the sake of continuing? Yes, you could say that. It would be difficult to see something into which you've put a lot of effort and time wither and go to waste. Out of duty and responsibility? Of course. That is always a major consideration. But more than anything, I can honestly say that it is just because of our love for the kind of work we do. As simple as that.

Thus, we, as Media Center 2018 (MC2018), the first editorial staff under the K-12 program, had the unenviable task of filling in the big shoes left by every other successful ed staff before us.

In my almost 6 years as MC learning coordinator, I'd say that this academic year has the record number of obstacles we had to dodge and problems we had to solve.

We had to deal with leaked hashtags, squealed pen names, creative ruts, late to no submissions, and busy schedules while constantly trying to put the most efficient system into place given the situation. This, of course, is putting it lightly. ;) The staff can tell you just how busy/stressful/high-pressure/intense the MC behind the scenes environment is.

But I can honestly say, too, that even before we have seen them in action, even when they still had little to no knowledge of pub work, I think there is no better group of people to take on this challenge than MC2018.

I am witness to how they have bloomed gracefully as writers and to how each of them gradually found their writing identity.

That they are creative, interested, and talented is without question. More than that, however, they seem to have taken to heart the unspoken rule to make each masterpiece better than the last.

So, together, we started with a blank canvas which we painted with life's different hues by writing the songs in our hearts. We made memories worthy of being captured on film. We chased dreams and took you to different places.

Now, we promise to continue to make you laugh and cry, to break your hearts then mend them, and to discover and inspire writers and readers who will further strengthen the UPIS literary tradition.

So to you our dear readers, both occasional and avid, we will never tire of saying thank you for your neverending support. It is our pleasure to provide you with stories that would stay with you for a long time.

And to MC2018, we have always been amazed of your raw potential and we are excited to see you soar to even greater publishing heights.

We are so proud of how far you've come though our journey has barely begun. With you at the helm, the future is bright.

MC is definitely in good hands.
