University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) will change its academic calendar from June-March to August-May starting AY 2016-2017 to synchronize with the UP College of Education (CoE), its mother unit.

Talks of the calendar shift have surfaced three years ago, but it was only in the UP Board of Regents meeting last February 26 that the decision was made. Three other UP administered high schools namely UP High School Iloilo, UP Rural High School Los Baños, and UP High School Cebu, will also begin classes in August.

In an interview, UPIS principal Dr. Ronaldo M. San Jose said that the shift did not push through because all relevant sectors should first be consulted before making the final decision this year. Various factors such as the welfare of the graduates and the synchronization between COE and UPIS were taken into consideration in deciding whether or not the shift will take place.

According to Dr. San Jose, the synchronization plays a big part in this decision as it is a mandate of UPIS to be a laboratory school to CoE. The school serves as an observation, practicum and research site for programs for it and other UP colleges and institutions.

When the tertiary unit shifted and the secondary didn’t, those who were part of undergraduate programs only had the chance to have their practicum in only a quarter instead of the needed semester.

Due to the shift, the Christmas break will also be the semestral break but there will be a week off during the Holy Week. / by Trisa de Ocampo
