University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Junior Maroons’ rookie guard Abel Lopez participated in the Philippine Youth Elite Basketball team’s DSA Asia Cup Invitational championship last April 28-29, 2017 at the Harrow International School in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
Averaging 12 points per game, the 5-foot-2 freshman played an essential part in the team’s flawless 5-0 record that resulted to their championship. This under-13 team led by Coach Mark Herrera represented the Philippines in the tournament as they bested other international teams like Hong Kong and Shanghai.
He has been part of the team since 2013 and is now considered as one of the leaders and main point guard of the team. A couple of years back, he was contacted by head coach Mark Herrera to try out for the national team. It was there that he showed his skills and impressed everyone with his razzle and dazzle.
According to him, he is very happy and proud to be achieving this level of success at a very young age. “Masaya ako kasi isa na ako sa mga inaasahan ni coach para mag-point guard sa team,” he shared.
Despite the undersized man he is, his warrior-like heart could surely be a huge part of the UPIS Junior Maroons’ future, one that has long been hungry for a place in the final four. //by Jaggie Gregorio, Blade Saliva and Nathan Ramos
