Opinion: Consider This: Responsible Watching

Have you ever experienced having a great time in the cinema, watching this movie you’ve been waiting to see for months, only to be interrupted by a person kicking the back of your seat? Or perhaps suffered temporary blindness as the person sitting next to you suddenly took their phone out in full brightness to text mid-scene? Or maybe you’ve had the worst time watching as the people behind you were chatting each other up and giving spoilers?

Rest assured that you’re not the only one who has endured such unpleasant circumstances. Because too often do people forget proper etiquette in public places, especially in cinemas and theaters.

What is it that makes us unable to observe proper manners in public places? Are we doing this deliberately or are we just plain unaware? If you’re doing this on purpose, then that’s just downright rude. But perhaps sometimes, it could be difficult to get the feel of certain situations so we become unsure or unmindful of what to do. But don’t panic, there’s a solution to this.

The key word that everyone should always remember when in a public setting is: consideration. One must always be considerate of the people around them. This is because your actions, although it may not be apparent, do affect other people.

Think of it in a way that what you do to others is also what you want others to do to you and vice versa. If you don’t want hearing those annoyingly loud ringtones in that very important heartrending scene, be a good example and keep your phone on silent or on vibrate. You don’t want an extensive history of the movie franchise whispered to your ear? Keep quiet and enjoy the show, don’t chat up everyone in a 3-seat radius. You don’t like it when people keep telling you to move because they arrived late and have to get to the seats in the middle? Arrive early, so you don’t bother anyone and you’ll even have the time to pick seats if it’s free seating.

Another example is the undying rule of not using gadgets in cinemas and theaters. Not only does this distract the audience, it can also distract live performers. Besides, you didn’t go there to tweet and text your besties but to watch the show. Also, one ultimate peeve for everyone who watches musicals, are the karaoke enthusiasts. Whether your voice is from the grace of God or well, didn’t get enough grace, don’t sing along. Everyone appreciates enthusiasm but you and the audience paid to hear the professional performers on stage sing, not you.
One other thing to consider is, if you know you’re sick, don’t go at all and rest at home. First, because you might get other innocent people sick. Second, because you coughing and sneezing throughout the whole show, isn’t the best acoustic experience for the audience.

What about a common dilemma like not knowing which cup holder to use? Most people are right-handed, so the norm is to use the right one. But not everyone is right-handed, so the best way is to see if the ones beside you also have drinks, and consider if they also have cup holders to their left and right.

Countless situations could present themselves to you, and you may be uninformed on how to tackle them. Do not worry, whether in a small setting or in a great hall,, with a few people or with a huge crowd, remember that there is meaning in thoughtful deeds and no greater feeling than knowing someone has been considerate of you.

When in doubt, be considerate. //by Hillary Fajutagana
