Last March 23 2019, eight students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) of the section 11- Amado V. Hernandez (11-AVH) participated in YouThink: Likha Crafting the Filipino Culture at Melchor Hall in the University of the Philippines Diliman.

YouThink was organized by the UP Guilder Institute (UPGI) as an annual one-day journalism seminar and competition, in which any private or public school from Grades 7-12 may participate.

There are six categories in total. The representatives from UPIS and their categories are as follows: Aldric De Ocampo for Editorial Writing, Aleana Estilon for Editorial Cartooning, Ezekiel Dionisio, Keio Guzman and Joy Asuncion for News Writing, James Tolosa for Business Writing, Kiara Gabriel for Photo Journalism, and Angie Albao for Feature Writing.

All the competitions were held during the morning session of the seminar. The afternoon session, on the other hand, was a series of seminars held by Journalism Professors from CNN Philippines, The Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, and Business World. During this time and the mini-workshop before the competition, the students picked-up on how to be better Journalists as well as how to better their writing skills when writing an article and the state of the Journalism in our country.

“Everything can be seen in the angle of money”, according to James Tolosa, who participated in the Business Writing competition. From what he picked-up from the afternoon session he stated that business articles make you think how people use business as a trade of money or goods, which makes him more aware of how the legal and illegal trades in the world has effects on the social issues of different countries.

The overall winner of the competition is Philippine Science Bicol Region. //by Roel Ramolete
