RESEARCH PROPOSAL

I.         Topic/Title: Sleep Deprivation among UPIS 7 – 12 Students

II.        Background:
Sleep is an “important” part of the life of a UPIS student. It is known to contribute to his/her emotional stability and enhanced school/athletic performance. The UPIS Clinic advises that students have at least seven hours of sleep every day in order to reap the aforementioned benefits.

However, according to the UPIS Administration, a lot of students suffer from sleep deprivation. Due to an immense number of projects, training hours, and other demanding requirements, they fail to have even a nap every day. According to them, they have become “vampires” who cram every night.

Sleep deprivation is known to have severely negative effects to UPIS students. Because of being “sabaw” and “lutang”, the time it takes for them to process information is delayed. Black eye shadows begin to appear, thus indicating a higher risk of heart attack, diabetes, stroke, etc. Moreover, the rate of students “sleeping” on the beds of the UPIS Clinic and the sleeping corners in classrooms has increased by 999% over the past three years. However, most of the UPIS students claim they “do not care” about the sleep deprivation they are experiencing. They think it is a “normal” thing and thus accept its negative effects.

With that, it is important to study the importance of sleep among UPIS 7 – 12 students. This will help the students consider “sleeping more frequently”. Meanwhile, the UPIS Faculty will be able to understand their situation and spread sleep awareness in the school.

III.        Thesis Statement: UPIS 7 – 12 students suffer from sleep deprivation.

IV.        Objectives of the Study:
A.    To determine the percentage of UPIS 7 – 12 students who experience sleep deprivation
B.    To find out the factors accelerating the rate of sleep deprivation among UPIS 7 – 12 students

V.         Research Questions:
A.    What is the percentage of UPIS 7 – 12 students who experience sleep deprivation?
B.    What are the factors accelerating the rate of sleep deprivation among UPIS 7 – 12 students?

VI.       Significance of the Study. The study will be significant to the following:
A.    UPIS Students. This study will help UPIS students see the importance of sleep in their lives. It will discourage them from “laughing off” their sleep deprivation and make them aware of its negative effects.
B.    UPIS Faculty & Administration. This study will help the two institutions understand the need of their students to sleep. It may inspire them to consider sleep as a core value of UPIS. Moreover, they may think about adding sleep as a main subject in UPIS.
C.     Other Schools. This study will help students and teachers from other schools see the importance of sleep as well. According to a recent study by DepEd, 101% of the schools in the Philippines experience sleep deprivation. Bearing in mind that fact, they may consider integrating sleep into their respective curricula.

VII.       Methodology:
1. Respondents. All UPIS 7 – 12 students will be sampled for the study.
2. Locale. The study will be conducted at the UPIS 7 – 12 Building.
3. Instruments and Data Gathering. A survey questionnaire inquiring the number of hours and factors of sleep deprivation will be used. In addition, an interview schedule will enhance the findings from the questionnaire. The questions will be based on the sleep self-assessment test by Psycom.
4. Statistical Analysis Method. For quantitative data, comparison of frequency means of the hours of sleep of UPIS 7 – 12 students will be used. The chi-squared test will also be used to determine the factors of sleep deprivation. Qualitative analysis will be incorporated via the aforementioned interview schedule.
