Literary (Submission): The MC Effect

10/28/2016 10:19:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Ang unang bagay na ipagagawa sa MC
Ay ang magsulat.
Magsulat.
Ano nga ba ang isusulat,
Kung wala naman akong papel,
Walang papel sa buhay mo?

Panulat.
Meron akong panulat.
Meron akong lapis na walang tasa.
Pointless.

At iniwan ako
Sa panghuling pagkakataon
Hindi ko masabing paalam
Kasi alam mo na ang lahat
Hindi ko masabing ingat
Dahil ako ang nagdudulot ng kapahamakan
Di ko masabing patawad
Kasi luging-lugi ka na
Di ko masabing mahal kita
Dahil hindi na
Hindi na ulit

At ngayo'y mag-isa ako
Nagpipinta ng mga di mawaring hugis
Gamit ang sarili kong tila walang kulay, walang sigla
Di sinasabi ang dapat sabihin
Di inamin ang dapat aminin
Walang imik
Nakayuko

How can I forget someone like you?
When your iridescent eyes are nonpareil
Captivating me so effortlessly
Forever bound by your spell

How can you not forget someone like me?
When my eyes are glazed and fatigued
Staring blankly into the void
Disconnected from reality

How can I forget someone like you?
When your smile heals my broken soul
A reminder of how oblivious you were
Of how my heart you stole

How can you not forget someone like me?
When my smile holds no sincerity
Nothing but a mere distraction
From the emptiness that fills me

How can I forget someone like you?
When you are so fearless and unafraid
Your words hold so much meaning
An indelible serenade

How can you not forget someone like me?
When my life is a never-ending charade
Of words that form constellations in my head
But evade me when I have something to say

No wonder you forgot someone like me
For you saw what everyone else couldn’t see
You saw someone who’s still breathing
But inside slowly dying.

Months have passed
Still, here I am
Writing something about you
Again.

It’s been a while,
I know I should stop.
But my hand can’t stop itself;
It won’t stop writing about you.

I remember how your voice sent shivers all over me,
When you whispered sweet words into my ears.
But then I felt something sting my heart
As I recalled how you so bluntly said, “Let’s end this.”

I admit that I miss you.
All the tears we shed,
All the happy memories we made,
All the times we said, “I love you.”

But I miss my old self even more.
The one who didn’t cry every night,
The happy girl everyone used to see,
The one who wished she had never met you.

I have wasted too much time
Thinking about where I went wrong.
Then I realized I wasn’t at fault
Because it was you all along.

After all, I don’t regret anything.
I may have changed a lot, have been broken a lot,
But it was to give myself a chance
To be a better version of what I once was

It took so long,
But at least I learned to let go.
Just give me some time
And I’ll be fine.

Months have passed
And yes, here I am
Writing something about you
For the last time.

Literary: A Cup of Coffee

10/28/2016 09:55:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

It is quite a feat to sip a hot cup of coffee alone, when we used to do it together. You loved it sweet and foamy and hated what you tasted of my macchiato. You giggled when I burnt my tongue and I got back at you by wiping the cream off your lips. Then we’d sit beside each other. You’d lean your head against my shoulder, put your hand in mine, and we’d talk about absolutely anything.

It was a rainy afternoon then, same as what the forecast said for today. The cold wind in the coffee shop enveloped me, as I tried to fight it with the heat of a cup of coffee; heat which used to be from your limitless affection, your endless love.

It was a year from this day, if I’m not mistaken, that we drank our last cup together. It was different from those scalding ones we had before. This time, it was iced; cold as how our hearts parted from each other. It was a hot summer night, when I chose to wipe the tears off your face rather than just the sweat from the immense heat. My throat was parched, dry as the drought that I suddenly felt in my heart. My tongue got tired of the taste of macchiato, the same time I got tired of our love for each other.

Maybe the bitterness in the change of blend to a ristretto also changed the way I felt about you. I got my tongue burnt for the last time. I messed up the words I was supposed to tell you, and instead of giving you the usual laugh, all I brought were tears. Nothing happened after that. The coffee that used to be hot and sweet is now cold and bitter.

Now I’m here, sitting alone in one corner of the same café, watching you from across the room as you drink your favorite cup of latte. Quite nostalgic, yet things are different from what they used to be a year ago. A bigger smile is painted on your face, as the guy you were with burnt his tongue and wiped the foam off your lips.

I still remember the last time I got mine burnt, too, then stumbled upon the words I wanted to tell you; I still have them with me though, on the same day, in the same café, but in a different scenario, hoping that I could still tell you what I really meant. If I told you these now, would you still remember the feeling of how we drank our cup of coffee back then?

I took several steps across the room to get to your space. With my palms all sweaty, I opened my mouth. I paused for a moment, “Hi, it's been a while,” with an awkward smile on my face. We had a little chat, yet it didn’t last long. “I’ll leave you two now. I’m really happy for you,” and walked to the counter where, before leaving, I took home a cup of macchiato. I just felt like it; I missed the way it tastes.

Up to the last moment, I didn’t get my words right. I guess it’s how it is supposed to be. But maybe it was the best decision to make. You two looked so happy, happier than we ever were. He loved you more than I did, and my dear, it is something you deserve.

It was still pouring outside and my eyes were wet, perhaps from the rain. My chest was cramping up, maybe from too much caffeine. I wiped my eyes, took a deep breath, and finally started walking away.

Betray (verb.)
What once was ours, is now gone.
We told each other things that we’d never let anyone else hear.
But one of your secrets came from another mouth, not yours.
A secret that mattered,
A secret I could live with
If only you told me.

Trust (verb.)
I have entrusted my life to hands that have shed blood
I have confided in a shallow heart
My mind has been fooled by your sugarcoated kindness
I never thought someone like you could be so
Deadly
With words kept at the bottom of your throat

Age (verb.)
The moments that bloomed into our friendship
Have turned into memories that lay in the dust.
As time passed,
Our bond grew stronger.
As time passed,
The wine became sour.

I’ve made my decision
and that is to leave.
I am done with the constant fights.
I am done with all the crying.
I am done with all these.

And I am done with you.

I can’t feel anything but
hatred, loathing, anger and antipathy.
All I wanted was to hurt you but
I knew that it would hurt me more.

And I hate you for that.

I hate you for always making me feel this way.
I hate you for just standing there
and saying nothing.
I hate you for not saying the only word
that can make the turmoil in my heart disappear
One word, four letters to put everything in place:

“Stay.”

It was the only word I wanted to hear from you.
But you said nothing.

When you left me,
I ate my words
During a breakfast
Of half-cooked promises
And steaming farewells.
In heaping servings of useless pain,
You burned my throat
Until I could speak no longer.

When you came back,
We chose our words
During a lunch
Of hand-picked conversations
And only the best of phrases.
In tiny servings of expensive love,
We emptied our hearts
Until we could give no longer.

Before I left,
You withheld your words
During a dinner
Of candle-lit emotions
And indulgent declarations.
In a single serving of bittersweet goodbyes,
I smothered your intentions
Until you could stay no longer.

Nakabibingi
Ang bawat sigawan ninyo tuwing gabi
Na kulang na lang ay basagin niyo
Lahat ng baso't pinggan natin

Nakabibingi
Ang bawat "Hindi" at "Ayoko"
Na lagi niyong bukambibig
Sa bawat pag-uusap natin

Nakabibingi
ang bawat patak ng luha
Na nagmumula sa aking mga mata
Dulot ng labis kong pagluha

Ngunit mas higit na nakakabingi
Ang nakasusulasok na katahimikang iyong iniwan
Simula noong
kami'y iyong nilisan

He was played

He was foolish enough
To have thought it possible
To love

He who was so unamiable
He who was disnatured,
So destitute of feelings

Who could ever love him?

Because unlike the crowd of fanatics
Who subscribe to Universalism,
Believing that one day we will all be saved
By the great power who bestowed upon us
Everything

This being, has endowed him with nothing
Nothing so enchanting
Nothing so lacking in him

Than love

For how could one ever love
If he was never loved?

He would wake up in the middle of the night
To shouts in the other room
The reboant sounds of a failing marriage
The signs of love lost, if there ever were

He would eat his breakfast
With no one at his side
But the whispers clinging to the air,
“You are alone.”

There is no such word as love

It is a made-up word
Constructed by us mere mortals
To give us the illusion of escape,
From this deep hole we have found ourselves in

Unlike the devotees, he will never be saved

From neglect, from abandonment

He will be forgotten
Like the children from the unlit garden
Doomed to seek this thing called love
Yet never find it

Pangungusap (png.)
Grupo ng mga salita
May isang tiyak na kahulugan
Kadalasang diretso ang pagkakasabi at pagkakasulat
Nagtatapos sa isang tuldok

Tula (png.)
Grupo ng mga talinhaga
Walang katapusan ang mga kahulugan
Malikhain at may damdamin
Walang katapusan

“Mahal kita.”

May ritmong kaaya-aya, matalinhaga,
Mahal kita… may karugtong pa… mahal kita dahil…

When I tell you “I love you,” it only means I love you.
It doesn’t mean I have a crush on you or I like you.
It doesn’t mean I love my best guy friend or my childhood crush.
All it means is that I love you.

But do you know what it doesn’t mean?
It doesn’t mean that you love me back or that you have to do so.
It doesn’t mean that I’m important to you.
It doesn’t even mean that I’m a part of your life.
It doesn’t mean anything else
Because all it means when I tell you “I love you”
Is that I do.

You make my day, beloved.
Greet me with thy embrace.
There is no need for words tonight,
you fill the empty space.

The chilly air surrounds us now.
Speak no more dear, but smile.
Thy silent soul warms just like fire
so stay with me a while.

Come, paint thy blues with tears
or sing thy soundless symphony.
I’ll listen with my everything
So long as you are near me.

Mind not what this world utters
Remember only what’s within.
I love you; that’s what matters
that’s how it’s always been.

Our love is a story untold
its secrets are buried deep.
Unpretentious, yes, and pure,
as you and I had sworn to keep.

So speak no more and I’ll join you,
let’s love the quiet way
for with or without words I know,
I love you anyway.

Dalawang salita
Apat na pantig
“MAHAL KITA”

Ngunit heto,
Pag-ibig ko sa’yo,
Sigurado na ako,
Wala nang atrasan, gagawin ko na ‘to.

Damdamin para sa’yo
Mga titik ay hahayaang umagos sa labi
Uunti-untiing ilabas ang damdaming matagal itinago,
At sisiguraduhing sa wakas; akin nang masasabi

Apat na salita
Pitong  pantig
Buong pusong sasambitin
“Mahal kita noon pa” nais ko’y iyong mabatid.

Kapag kinausap mo siyang muli,
‘Wag kang magugulat kung ang una niyang babanggitin sa iyo’y;
“Sino ka?”

Kapag kinausap mo siyang muli,
‘Wag mo ng asahan ang nakasanayang,
“Kamusta ka?”

Kapag kinausap mo siyang muli,
Tanggapin mong ‘di na niya sasabihing,
“Mahal kita.”

Ngunit ‘wag kang susuko.
Maubos mo man ang buong diksyunaryo,
               at “Mahal kita”.

Ipaalala mo ang kakaibang saya
Sa pagsambit ng masasayang alaala ninyong dalawa.
Madehado ka man sa laban,
Manatili ka dahil mahal mo.

Ipaalala mong minsan siyang naniwala
sa pangako ng walang hanggan.
Bago pa man
          yaong gabing nagkaroon ng banggaan.
Bago pa man
yaong gabing tinakbo mo siyang duguan.
Bago pa man yaong oras
na kinausap ka ng doktor at sinabing,
“Malala ang sugat sa kanyang isipan.”
Bago pa man
yaong araw na bigla ka niyang nakalimutan.
Bago pa man yaong segundong
          tinakbuhan siya ng kasaysayan.

Ipaalala mo ang lahat sa kanya
Pagkat ‘di mo na mauulit pa –
Ang mga pagkakataon ninyong dalawa;
Ang mga lumisang alaala.

Every day, I hope to still hear your…

…Good morning!
My motivation to start the day right,
A reminder that I get to spend another day with you.
I look forward to every day,
Knowing that I'll wake up to my favorite view,
You.

…Good night!
It is my lullaby,
Like music before I sleep.
It makes everything feel right
Even if it isn't,
And for me, that is enough

…I promise!
Your promise that you won't leave
And that you’ll stay by my side
Through thick and thin,
Because I am worth too much to be left behind

These words mean so much to me
And just like that, you took them away
Like how you took your love away from me

Now these words mean nothing
Because they no longer come from you

But I'll still hold on to hope that,
Even if it's impossible,
Someday, maybe someday,
I'll wake up to your good mornings again.

“I take you, to be my love…”

Her eyes were beautiful-
A window to her lovely soul
A maiden so prim
Who took a chance on love

“…to have and to hold, from this day forward…”

A gamble it may seem,
But the maiden and the prince
Held each other, swayed and danced
Through the brightest of days
And even the stormy nights

“…for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer…”

She has lost her tiara—
All the love and happiness she ought to have
Her prince caught her in a castle of love
But the walls are squeezing her inside, leaving her bleary
All windows are slowly closing
no ray of beauty, but a strangling room of hurt
This is what losing in love might be

“…In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish…”

How funny that kings and queens say the same vows
But only a few make it true
Promises so real—
Only while young and ardent

They have caused a disconcertment of love
And this atrocity—

“…Till death do us part.”

You were dancing along ahead of me.
“You really love saying that don’t you?” I said with a smile.
“I do!” you cheered.
I balanced along the bricks of the sidewalk
“Do you ever want to get married?”I asked as my smile grew bigger.
“I do,” you stated with a small giggle.
“Aaand you know that I love you, right?” I inquired while walking faster, trying to catch up to you.
“I do,” you answered as you twirled and circled around me
“So why don’t we get married?” I asked, louder than I would’ve wanted.
“I...don’t want to,” you said as your dance slowed and got closer to me.
“Why?” I’m trying to reach out to you and dance along.
“I have my reasons.” You’re avoiding my attempts to get to you, and so you stumble and fall.
You just kept laughing even though you fell and scraped your knee. I took out my handkerchief and wrapped it around your wound.
“Geez, it’s like you’re not even hurt!” I exclaimed while helping you get up on your feet.
“Of course I get hurt, silly, it’s just that I don’t show it,” you explained as you ran ahead of me like nothing happened.
I stopped right there and watched you run, back turned to me.
“Hey!” I shouted, calling out to you.
“Do you ever get sad, then?” I asked.
You turned to me with a tear-stained face.
“I do.”

“Tama bang mahulog ako sa’yo?”
“Ngunit kaibigan kita, pwede ba yun?”

Iniwan mo akong mag-isa. Iniwan mo akong nasasaktan at hindi ko man lamang nasabing, “Mahal kita.”

And I have learned a lot

We say
“Annyyeong” to greet people “Hello” in Korea
“Ohayou gozaimasu” to say “Good morning” in Japan
“Bǎozhòng” to remind them to “Take care” in Chinese
“Apa Khabar?” to ask people “How are you?” in Malay
“Cảm ơn” express “Thank you” in Vietnamese.

We say,
“Je t’aime”
“Te amo”
“Ich liebe dich”
To people we love,
And “Paalam”
To people like you.

My kiss whispers your death
As I await your demise
For word of my
Disloyalty
Would soon
Reach you and bring
About rage and disbelief
It's not your fault you stumbled
Upon an unfaithful and cunning love
Sorry for playing, honey. I was just lonely.

I feel disdain
For people
Who cause so much pain
And don’t have any clue

Words flow through my brain
Voices I should not hear
Chew me up
Eat me alive

Life gets harder
My fear grows even stronger
Every night I ponder
How to get it together

None of your words are true
Yet they still affect what I do
My life is somehow breaking
Because of words I find degrading

For now I may feel down
But I will get back up
I will realize that your words
Are not worth my time

It’s time to take a stand
Your words will be the line in the sand
For I will never back down
I will stand my ground

There’s no point
Wasting my thoughts
On you and your lies
Life goes on

For soon your words
Will be just another faded memory

I didn’t hear you
When you said you loved me
I couldn’t read
When you wrote to tell me you cared

You didn’t hear me
When I sang you a song
You couldn’t read
When I wrote you this poem

We didn’t hear
The echoes of our hollow hearts
Screaming and begging
For the love to come back

We couldn’t read
Though it’s written in the stars
We held back the words
That once held us together

For we cannot hear what is unsaid
And our unsent letters will always be unread

Sapagkat alam kong wala akong kakayanan

Labag man ito
          sa nais ng puso ko,
Tuluyan ng lilisan
          sa buhay mo.

Literary: Tatlong Salita

10/28/2016 08:22:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Tayo’y nagsimula sa tatlong simpleng salita…

“May homework ba?”

Kinabukasan...

"Good morning Grande :)”

May pair work sa English noong tinanong mo ako n’yan.

“One must never forget his roots.”

Dream (v.)
From the Old English dremen,
Which means “rejoice”

To dream
Is to fantasize
About what can be

Think (v.)
From the Proto-Germanic thankjan,
Which means “appear”

To think
Is to realize
What is

Hate (v.)
From the Old English hatian,
Which means “with aversion to”

To hate
Is to deny
What you truly understand

Love (v.)
From the Proto-Germanic lubojan,
Which means “to approve”

And to love
Is to accept
What you never will

Write (v.)
From the German reissen,
Which means
“to design, sketch, draw, tear, pull, or tug”

And to write
Is to immortalize
All your hateful thoughts
All your lovely dreams
With marks
Made with your fingertips
Fluid as paint
On an artist’s canvas

It is to write a message
Into the unknown
In the hopes that one day
It will reach the one
Who longs for it most

Feature: (Goodbye and) Thank you, Professor Tandoc

10/27/2016 09:19:00 PM Media Center 1 Comments

We treat our school as our second home because we spend most of our time in it, devoting almost eight hours inside the campus. In it, we also have our second mothers and fathers—our teachers who play the roles of our parents when we are in school. Without them, we will not be able to learn what we need for the “real” world.

Last October 9, 2016, one of our beloved second parents, Prof. Violeta P. Tandoc, an English teacher at UPIS for 28 years, passed away at the age of 69. Join us as we remember her for who she was: a loving teacher and mother and a good friend and colleague.

Prof. Tandoc to her students or Ma’am Volet to her colleagues is one of the reasons why the UPIS students love the English subject. She is also one of the reasons why the students and the teachers are passionate about their work. Somehow, she touched their lives in different ways.

“Parang mga anak o apo na turing niya sa amin kasi sobrang mag-alaga si Ma’am,” Danna Sumalabe, who was one of Ma’am Tandoc’s 4-Patani advisees in AY 2009-2010, reminisces.

Her students describe her as very generous, kind, and loving. According to them, Ma’am Tandoc did not treat them simply as students; she treated them like her own children. How? Not only by teaching them how to use verbs and adjectives, but also how to deal with and solve their problems. She gave tips and advice on how to improve class presentations and individual performances. She always encouraged her students to do well in class.

“Kapag may problem ka sa English, siya agad ‘yung lalapit sayo para gumawa ng paraan,” says Jaja Ledesma, who was one of Ma’am Tandoc’s students in 4-Sitaw.

To add to that, she was a very hands-on adviser. She made sure that her class would get the first place. She helped them during the practices and gave suggestions on how to improve the performance, and a lot more.

When one student struggled to finish the test and drew all over the paper instead of answering it, Ma’am Tandoc saw the paper with his drawings and complimented him.

“…Sabi niya ang galing ko raw mag-drawing tapos ipagpatuloy ko hanggang college at i-try ko raw yung Fine Arts,” shares Angelo Cinco who was also a member of 4-Sitaw.

She knew that each student has his or her own skills and she encouraged their development.

Ma’am Tandoc’s motherly care extended to her colleagues as well.

Prof. Cathy Atordido who first worked with Ma’am Tandoc in 2006 says that she gave guidance and advice not just on being teachers and advisers but also shared life lessons on marriage and building a family.

Aside from this, she was a good friend to have a nice chat with. She shared stories about the books that she wanted to read, chamber theatre pieces, suggestions on the activities that may be used in class, the recipes that she wanted to cook and a lot more.

ONE LAST SMILE. One of Professor Tandoc's many interests outside work is gardening.

“Masayahin si Ma’am. Kahit nakakapagod ang trabaho at kahit maraming ginawa, lagi siyang nakangiti at positive,” Ma’am Cathy adds.

Even if their work was very tiring, the smile on her face never faded. She easily got along with others, and they were grateful for all the things that Ma’am Volet has taught them.

Prof. Melanie Donkor, who was one of her closest friends, described her as a sister. She had plenty of stories to tell, with 24 hours not being enough for all her stories.

“I would listen to her… she talks a lot,” Ma’am Donkor says fondly as she remembers Ma’am Tandoc.

After battling illness and an accident, she was still able to overcome challenges in her life. She never gave up and always made sure that those challenges would not bring her down. She always stood up after falling, and made sure that everything will be alright.

“She’s a tough woman; she did not give up so easily,” Ma’am Donkor adds with tears in her eyes.

It is sad to imagine that the new students and teachers were not able to meet a great teacher, friend, and mother like Ma’am Tandoc. And for the people that were able to meet her, the stories, lessons, and memories will always remain in their hearts.

For one last time, goodbye and thank you, Professor Tandoc. // by Zach Jugo

Feature: Mga Nagtatago sa Dilim: Kababalaghan at Katatakutan sa Loob ng UPIS

10/27/2016 09:12:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Feature: A Literally Legendary Day

10/27/2016 09:04:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

“Are you readyyyyyy?”
“Aye, aye, captain!”

It’s Literally Literary Day season once again!

Also known as LLD, it is one of the most-awaited events in the school year not only by UPIS students, but by the staff and teachers as well. Although it started as an activity of just the English Club members back in 2011, Ms. Jean Katherine Sales, a former English teacher and English club adviser, thought that it had the potential to be a school event, then bam! It soon became a UPIS tradition celebrated annually during the National Book Week.

At least two weeks before the day of the celebration, each student is tasked to choose a literary personality that he or she wishes to portray and dress up as. These characters can be from a novel, manga, or a comic book.

A number of students do their best to stand out and be chosen as the representative of their class. In this way, they would have the chance to win in the grade level competition where participants are judged by their costume and the way they portray their character.

On the day of presentation, a variety of characters such as princesses, monsters, fairies, anime icons, robots and many more can be seen. So whether you just want to stand out or just go the extra mile, here are some tips to help you make LLD legen—wait for it—dary!

1. Pick a character that isn’t much of a cliché.

Dare to be different from the others and search the four corners of the Earth for that one, distinct persona that will make you the sure winner of this year’s LLD Competition! Go far beyond the expectations of people. Just like Hannah Manalo of Batch 2018, who portrayed the Magic Mirror from Disney’s Snow White in last year’s LLD. She definitely surprised people by showing up wearing a DIY mirror costume made of cardboard, newspaper, and cloth.

FAIREST OF THEM ALL. Hannah Manalo is dressed as a mirror from the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

2. Don’t forget to always be in character.

LLD is a once-a-school year event that gives you the chance to be an entirely different person. Whether going to the bathroom or the canteen, be proud to wear that crown or hold that sword up high! Take advantage of the opportunity to show everyone who you can be!

3. Mind nobody but yourself.

Just do your own thing! At the end of the day, you’ll regret not making the most out of it. Remember that confidence is the best outfit anyone can wear! Set the standards. Aim to be the very best! Just look at the ever-famous Wenona Dawn Catubig of Batch 2019 who completely dominated the LLD competition for three consecutive years! She was never bothered by other people’s stares and looks because she was too busy pulling off Nell Sweetzer from The Last Exorcism on the ramp in 2014, making her one of the most memorable participants in the recent history of LLD.

HALL OF FAMER. Wenona Dawn Catubig is the reigning LLD champion for three consecutive years.

Feature: How to Unwind after Hell Week

10/27/2016 08:59:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Hell week, for most students, is the most hectic week in the quarter. It is the unholy combination of several tests and requirements due in seven days. After all the stress it brings, students want to relax and forget formulas and concepts for just a little while. Our brain needs to rest from all the information it has gathered and all the work it has done. But how exactly can they do that?

Catch up on your favorite series

You’ve been holding yourself back from watching Kdramas and/or other series so that you may be able to focus on studying. Now that hell week is over, it’s time to binge-watch all the episodes that you missed and be updated on what’s happening to the storyline! See if the protagonist has gone up to the antagonist, if the guy finally gets the girl, or if a new problem arises. If you’re not a fan of TV much, read books that you’ve been dying to open or maybe have a game marathon ‘til it’s midnight!

Spend time with your friends

What better way to unwind than with friends? You can laugh and talk without having to worry about what needs to be reviewed and submitted. Do different kinds of activities that strengthen your bond as friends like playing sports, baking, or eating out and just enjoying the fact that you actually have time to hang out.

Listen to your favorite music

via GIPHY

Music is medicine for the soul and the mind. Turn up the volume of your favorite artists or bands as if you’re witnessing their glory for the first time. Try a new genre, artist, or band if you’ve gotten tired of the same artists you’ve been listening to all hell week just to keep yourself sane. Move your body to the beat of the sound or sit down and just listen. Earphones in; world out.

Have some alone time

via GIPHY

This is the time to do hobbies you haven’t done in a while. You can also challenge yourself to do things you’ve never done before and try something new! Treat yourself to a slice of cake, a drink from your favorite coffee shop, or a walk around the Acad Oval to appreciate your surroundings. You can also think and reflect on what has happened in the past few days and be thankful that it’s over. Don’t want to think anymore? Lie down and take a nap, there’s nothing like a good sleep after going through hell and back.

ONE TEAM, ONE FIGHT. Photo Credit: Adrian Bornilla

// nina Nathan Ramos at Carlos Laderas

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Girls Varsity Swimming Team swam their way to third place of the UAAP Season 79 Swimming Competition held on October 21-24 at the Rizal Memorial Complex.

The girls tallied a total of 238 points for their third straight 2nd runner-up finish since 2014.

Their spectacular performance was led by Zoe Hilario's record-breaking swim in the 400M Individual Medley where she timed 5:22.87 breaking the former record, 5:22.97, by a heart stopping millisecond.

“I felt really happy and proud,” Hilario said. “I didn’t know that I had the capacity to break the record.”

The team took home 15 medals with Hilario bagging a total of 7: 1 gold, 5 silvers, and a bronze. Charize Esmero won 4 medals, taking the gold in the 100M backstroke event, silver in both 800M and 400M freestyle, and bronze in 200M backstroke. Chloe Fabic also added a bronze medal in the 200M butterfly.

Esmero and Fabic, together with Isabel Baclig and Chesca Joves, took home the bronze in the 4x100 freestyle relay while Joves, her sister Franz, and juniors Rodgers and Luan Silvestre, won the silver from the 4x50 medley. Suzy Uy, Mae Rodgers, Jammy Mapa, and Waya Silarde earned a bronze in the 4x50 freestyle relay.

According to the girls’ team, they prepared well for this season. They trained every day and set a winning mindset before the season started. Moreover, they encourage each othe to do their best.

The UPIS Boys Swimming Team, on the other hand, finished 6th in the tournament. Veteran Drew Magbag led the team with 2 silvers and 1 bronze.

“I always try my best not to miss a day without swim,” said Drew Magbag when was asked about his personal preparations. “You dream, you plan, you work for it, and you achieve it,” he added.

Boys’ team captain JN Fajutagana said that they also prepared well for Season 79. “Next year mas magtetraining kami and mas magfofocus,” he promised. // with reports from Jaggie Gregorio, Nathan Ramos, Carlos Laderas, Blade Saliva, and Forth Soriano

Opinion: The Online Battle

10/27/2016 08:35:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

You may have heard or seen the recent uproar in social media, specifically Twitter, concerning a tweet that caused disagreement among the students of UPIS who were aware of the commotion. Some students expressed anger at the tweet and chose to post their opinion of it; some tried to minimize the damage by encouraging people to take the high road and some just didn’t care. But there are a lot of arguments discussing what should have been done or who really is to blame for the chaos that ensued.

This isn’t the first time that social media has been a medium for conflict between students and this does not only affect the UPIS community. It’s an international problem that consistently shows up and predominantly manifests itself in comments sections that goad even passive readers. It arises from the moral differences that create the rift in the meaning of social media responsibility.

Moral differences cause diverse views on what is right or wrong. A person’s thoughts about responsibility may be different from another person. It isn’t illegal to have different thoughts on the matter but it makes it difficult as a society to peacefully interact with one another. Let us define social media responsibility as the duty of being accountable for whatever activity one does online along with the assurance that no one is harmed because of it.

A person is free to do whatever he/she wants online. Granted that it is your business whatever you post, remember that you are responsible for what you do. But, like nobody can stop you from posting what you want online, how people will react to it is also out of your control. If you have an opinion, they have one, too. If you are allowed to say what you want, they are, too.

For this reason, it is actually productive to be respectful to and of one another. Having varying opinions isn’t the problem here. People need a healthy debate that promotes open-mindedness and helps everybody learn something new. However, if you have something to say, you don’t have to be rude.

Criticism is supposed to be beneficial to the person criticizing and the person being criticized. It is supposed to help them improve. Therefore, a well-mannered exchange is far more valuable than an absurd barrage of insults and obscenities that help no one in the long run. If it’s to someone you know in real life it’s even better to just say it face-to-face, especially if you have a problem with one another. The reality of it is we hide behind our computers and phones instead of interacting with each other as well as we should in real life.

Online commotion caused by conflict and irresponsible use of social media should not only be blamed on one person. It can be said that there will always be someone who will be the instigator of the mess he/she will find themselves in, but it cannot be denied that the people who react carelessly are also instruments to the disharmony. Posts that are poorly worded or expressed in a vulgar manner would offend anybody and is prone to misinterpretation. Additionally, commenting or reacting thoughtlessly is like feeding fuel to the fire, an attempt at further aggravating everyone involved.

The likelihood of hurting someone emotionally through online interaction is actually high. Dragging an already dismal situation longer than it should have lasted could scar the people who are affected by it. Unpleasant experiences online can manifest itself in real life and influence how a person interacts offline. Challenging as it may, it’s worth it to try to clarify the situation to understand where other people are coming from.

We are given the freedom to do whatever we want online. It is both a privilege and a responsibility. Let us use it for better purposes than sending shade and mean statements to one another. You have every right to air your opinion, as I am expressing mine now. But people also have the right to be respected as we would want to be respected.

Let us never forget that our words are the sum of who we are, and thus we shouldn’t use them lightly. Change the stigma that surrounds social media, show people that it’s more than just the “online cancer” but the stage for a community to help other out in the name of progress. // by Hillary Fajutagana

Music Video: Hatid

10/17/2016 08:42:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

(Hango sa tulang "Hatid" ni Faber Castell 0.7)

Umuulan nang malakas
Hinintay mong ito ay lumipas
Nang aking marinig na wala kang sundo
Isang pagkakataon ang biglang nabuo

Muntik ko na namang palipasin
Ang pagkakataon na minsan lang dumating
Ngunit salamat sa ‘king mga kaibigan
Na ako’y pinilit at hindi sinukuan

Refrain:
Nanginginig at naninigas sa pagkakaupo
Pakiramdam ay hindi na mapagtanto
Isip ay gulong-gulo

Chorus:
Mukhang natotorpe na yata ako
Ihahatid ba kita na tayo lang dalawa?
Wala tayong ibang kasama
Ikaw at ako, wala ng iba pa

Sinuot ang sapatos at sintas ay binuhol
Nagmamadali na ikaw ay hinabol
Hinawakan ang payong
At magkasamang naglakad pasulong

Sinabi mo ay hindi naman ito kailangan
Ngunit ito pa rin ay aking pinagpilitan
Makasama ka lang at makakwentuhan
Kahit na hanggang sa sakayan lamang

Refrain:
Nanginginig at naninigas sa pagkakaupo
Pakiramdam ay hindi na mapagtanto
Isip ay gulong-gulo

Chorus:
Mukhang natotorpe na yata ako
Ihahatid ba kita na tayo lang dalawa?
Wala tayong ibang kasama
Ikaw at ako, wala ng iba pa

Wala na...
Wala na...
Wala na...

Chorus:
Mukhang natotorpe na yata ako
Ihahatid ba kita na tayo lang dalawa?
Wala tayong ibang kasama
Ikaw at ako, wala ng iba pa

Wala ng iba pa
