Feature: Netflix Recommendations

Have you ever wanted to Netflix and chill but don’t know any shows? Are you bored of boring, repetitive sitcoms with never-ending laugh tracks? Have you ever wanted to spice up your Netflix experience? Do you want to find some non-mainstream shows on the platform? Then these shows that we’re about to recommend might just be right for you.

1. Tuca & Bertie

Let’s start with a show that is perfect to watch whether you’re alone or with your close friends. Tuca & Bertie is a feel-good show with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes brought to you by the creators of critically acclaimed Netflix show Bojack Horseman. The show’s genre falls under satire, comedy-drama, dark-comedy, and animated sitcom. Tuca & Bertie is about two 30-year old friends that live in the same apartment building. Tuca is a cocky and carefree toucan while Bertie is an anxious, daydreaming songbird. Tuca & Bertie runs for 10 episodes, with each one running for 25-30 minutes long. The show dives head first into the problems and conventions of everyday life, tackling them in an exaggerated and comedic fashion while also being able to slow down and reflect deeply on the heavier subject matter. One prominent actor that partakes in Tuca & Bertie as the character Speckle is Steven Yeun, best known for his acting in The Walking Dead series as Glenn Rhee.

2. Final Space

Another animated comedy-drama in Netflix, that was produced by the cable network TBS, is Final Space with an overall rating of 8.4/10 on iMDb. Embark on the episodic adventures of space criminal Quinn, with his planet-destroying sidekick Mooncake, and a whole cast of outlandish characters. With these characters, all under one ship, they all embark on a quest to save the universe and try to uncover the mystery of “Final Space.” This show is a fun romp around the universe, as it is episodic, each episode connects neatly with a sense of continuity. Despite the light-hearted, off the walls, comedic portrayal in each episode, the show still manages to capture your emotions during its quieter moments. One Prominent voice actor of the show is Tom Kenny, best known for his work in Adventure Time as Ice king, Dog in CatDog, and finally Spyro from Spyro the Dragon video game series.

3. Russian Doll

The next show on the list is Russian Doll with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%, a comedy-drama set in modern-day New York City. Nadia is a guest of honor of a party, but later into the night she gets caught in a time loop where she keeps on attending the same event at the same time each night, and this keeps on repeating every time she dies at the end of each night. This show although at first showing a more nihilistic approach to its characters, soon after eventually has itself have a more wholesome message and undertone. It manages to fully round out the two main characters, Nadia and Alan who is another victim to the repeated deaths, syncing them up and creating an odd yet endearing dynamic between the two. One prominent actor in the T.V show is Dasha Polanco, who stars in another hit Netflix series called “Orange is the New Black”, whom her character in Russian Doll is Beatrice.

4. Atypical

Last on the list is a Peabody Award nominated show called Atypical with an iMDb score of 8.3/10, this emotional comedy covers the life and love of Sam, a teen on the autism spectrum. The show portrays Sam’s adventures into adulthood and independence. , along with his even more complex family life and his family’s struggles to overcome love, loss, and trauma. This show takes a more serious tone, as it presents a look into the life of those under the autism spectrum. However, it has its moments of comedy and still packages its main messages and themes in an enjoyable format. The actors for the show are a mainly new cast however Sara Gilbert, who has received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations, will join the cast in the upcoming season 3.

In conclusion, these shows that we have recommended are just some shows that we find interesting and should have better notoriety because of how highly they are rated by critics and how enjoyable these shows that we have experienced first-hand. In your spare time, why not try watching these shows if you don’t have anything to do or watch on Netflix?
