“heART Check,” a free seminar conducted by M&P Productions was held last April 22 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the University of the Philippines (UPIS) 7-12 Auditorium to educate students about the arts and broadcast media.

M&P Productions is a full-service video production company specializing in branded and digital content, corporate videos, and post-production, owned by Ms. Paula Bianca Lim-Macapagal, a UPIS Batch 2006 alumna, and her husband Mr. Macky Macapagal.

Because they could only accommodate a limited number of interns, the company which is a partner institution of the UPIS as an internship site for Grade 12 students of the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) track, decided to hold this free seminar to educate a larger number of students who are interested in their field.

The seminar featured various media practitioners from GMA News, Globe, CNN, TBWA Advertising Agency, and Ogilvy Advertising Company. It aimed to broaden students’ knowledge in arts and broadcast media from field experts, ignite and cultivate a passionate and inspiring environment, and expose students to real-life challenges when it comes to art-changing decisions.

The event was free and open to all UPIS Grades 7 to 12 students, but was required for all those taking the SSH track.

There were 5 career talks conducted by Karen Lumbo, a senior program manager in GMA Public Affairs, Maxine Casaclang, a social media and digital content strategist of Globe Telecom, Joseph Cataan, an executive producer from CNN Philippines, CJ de-Silva Ong, a creative director for TBWA Advertising, and Nigel Cornel, an associate business director of Ogilvy Philippines.

When asked what the most important lesson that she learned from the seminar was, Grade 12 Wenona Catubig answered, “I learned how important it is to put yourself into work. What you do [at work] is more than a way for you to make money, it should also ignite something in you: a passion, a need to make a difference, a happiness from creating something meaningful.”

An online raffle was also held for students who posted photos about their takeaway from the talks on their social media accounts. They gave away three 16-gigabyte flash drives won by Josh Santos and Yssa Luna of 12-Kalayaan and Ezekiel Dionisio of 11-Amado V. Hernandez, two earphones received by Catubig and Marlyn Go, also from 12-Kalayaan, and the grand prize one-terabyte external hard drive snatched by Magan Basilio of 10-Yakal. //by Magan Basilio, Addie Sajise, and Claire Tamayo
