The University of the Philippines Integrated School Girls Volleyball Team (UPISGVT) competed against Escuela de Sophia Caloocan, Inc. (EDSCI) and St. Patrick School of Novaliches (SPSN) in the 16-under semi-finals of the Inter School Athletic and Academic League (ISAAL) last September 3 at the UPIS Gymnasium, Quezon City.
UPISGVT emerged victorious in their second match in a best-of-five fight for third place against SPSN, ending a 25-19, 25-19,25-19 winning column.
With the demonstration of force against SPSN, UPISGVT was able to shine as they deliver terrifying blows and impenetrable blocks. UPISGVT was able to push a 6-point lead against SPSN, ending the first set with a 25-19.
UPISGVT gradually carried more momentum with an early powerful offense and defense play displayed by Alliah Omar, Ghia Bartolome, and Giesha Capistrano to flank SPSN in the second set. UPISGVT concentrated their defense at the front lines to give their enemy a harder time as Jeulyanna Ferrer sizzled with an onslaught of spikes and blocks. The team cruised to a much higher score afterwards, pushing the lead to 12-3 at the middle of the set, with Capistrano leading the last half, scoring five more points to end with another 25-19.
SPSN strived to devise a comeback, forcing an early 4-point lead against UPISGVT. However, their efforts did not persist until the end of the game. With 4 ties in total, and both teams switching in and out of the lead, comes an assault of spikes and poweralleyes from once again; Omar and Capistrano, along with Mary Jackson’s deciding kill block, to lead UPISGVT an easy victory, 25-19.
Before UPISGVT got to establish victory over SPSN, the team first experienced defeat from EDSCI in the hunt for a spot in the championships.
During the first set, UPISGVT was demolished amidst excellent resistance against EDSCI, 12-25.
UPISGVT tried to conspire a comeback in the second set but was exploited by the enemy as both teams enhanced their defenses, forcing the crowd’s eyes to roll sideways from a marathon of rallies. Alyssa Avila and Jelena Evangelista continued to deflect the ball while Capistrano and Omar delivered outstanding blows to the opposite direction. UPISGVT kept up with EDSCI’s pace but was slowly cut short as EDSCI finally decided to bring more ammunition in the game, 22-25.
From a sluggish start, UPISGVT was able to shorten the gap in the third set, 17-18. The temperature kept rising especially after Ferrers’s show of consecutive service aces that made the enemy’s hearts pound a little harder. The flame was shortly extinguished due to errors committed by the team, walking away with a final score of 25-27, in favor of EDSCI.
“Binigay namin yung best namin. Kaya lang siguro noong pasimula pa lang, nawala yung communication. Tapos yung iba, sa tingin ko kabado.” Ferrer remarked.
“Kailangan pa namin is defense at siyempre consistency. Pero kahit papaano, proud ako, kasi we did our best naman,” she added. //by Julius Guevarra Jr. and Keio Guzman
