Literary: Our Starscape

I sit cross-legged across from you
Watching the burning flecks of sunrays shine on your eyes
Below us, planet Earth rests, behind it, Venus resides
Yet we’re far, far away from everything and everyone else
And the only ones keeping us company in this present moment
Are the infinite collection of stars the universe keeps

Around us the stars are dancing, flying, twinkling, blinking
Cascading and closing in on us like a blizzard in slow motion
And enveloping us in dazzling shimmers of light
I reach out and grasp one, clutching it tightly
Letting the others slip past me like dust

My eyelids feel heavy
Before us, the galaxies whirl, turning into an indigo kaleidoscope
A comet zooms around the corner, leaving its dusty trail
My head grows lighter, and my arms are boulders locking me down
Am I dreaming? Is everything I’m experiencing in this moment real?
Is this what hallucinating, envisioning the unlikely, feels like?
Yet I can’t find it in me to complain
Because we have a shared space that no one else can go to

The universe is vast and inky black
An endless, unmoving state set in perpetual limbo
But the stars are on fire, and the nights are long
And then there is you
Only you
Here in this starscape you share with me
