University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Grade 11 and 12 students from the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) track attended Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio’s talk at the 16th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Conference held at the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED) last Thursday, October 4.

Carpio discussed the ongoing territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea and the significance of ancestral maps in winning the arbitration case at the Permanent Court of Arbitration against China last 2016. He emphasized the 1734 Murillo-Velarde Map that recognizes the Scarborough Shoal and Spratlys Island as part of the Philippine territory. According to Carpio, this map debunks “the Fake News of the Century” and proves why China’s “Nine-Dash Line” is a “false narrative.”

He said, “The Scarborough [Shoal] and Spratlys [Islands] were not part of the maps of the Chinese Dynasties, and the claim that it was part of China 2000 years ago is fake news. [It is the] fake news of the century.”

During the speech, Justice Carpio presented the original and a replica of the Murillo-Velarde Map bought by Mel Velasco Velarde from an auction in London. He decided to “give the said artifact to the Filipino people.” Replicas of the maps are currently being donated to various organizations to raise awareness about the territory of the Philippines.

// by Vea Dacumos, Elane Madrilejo, Drenisse Moleta, and James Tolosa
