LoveMC,
Like a real jungle UPIS is very diverse. Animals of every kind can be found here. From over-dominant jungle cats to soft-spoken squirrels. There are big and dumb animals, overly smart animals, and all around great animals with beautiful hair and great personality (like a peacock although I’ve always seen peacocks as self-centered and stuck up).
A jungle is not a good place to be small, not so literally applied in UPIS, but if you are, you have to make up for it by using your wits or talents.
If you were an animal you would probably be very affected by the other animals around you, what they say, what they do, like in the real world. You might be prey—prey to bullies, meanies and plain bad guys—or you could be a predator, feared by everyone, a threat that needs to be taken down. Or you could just be there minding your own business, just existing in the craziness surrounding you.
In the jungle, animal interactions are inevitable. There is competition. Everyone wants to be on top somehow in some aspect whether it is academics, physique, or extra-curricular activities. Sometimes there is mutualism, no matter how illegal it is. Friends being the good people that they are let their other friends copy their homework or they help each other out in tough times and group works. Predation can also be observed in the form of bullying or social status hierarchy. Most of the animals will affect you mentally, physically, emotionally, sometimes even spiritually. They will make you feel many things. They will make you feel loved, hurt, happy, broken, ecstatic, infuriated, inspired, and every other feeling there is. Sometimes they will help in attaining your goals but other times, they drag you down and act as an obstacle.
They always say never to let peer pressure get to you but they never say not to pressure your peers so maybe that’s where the problem lies. It is harder to stay strong if the bullets keep coming. If we didn’t pressure peers in the first place, we wouldn’t have to be dealing with the problem but ultimately you’ll just learn to live with it. Peer pressure isn’t the only problem that the animals in UPIS encounter. Stress is also another challenge for them.
It is hard to survive in UPIS especially if you don’t know what you need or rather what you need to be. You don’t exactly have to be perfect but you should have these qualities somehow. You have to be intelligent. You should know what you should be doing and how you should do it. You should also be resourceful. Not everything you need will be given to you, so you need to make use of what you have. You should also be patient. You have to wait for the right time to do things. You have to be persevering. Don’t let one failure get you down, try until you succeed. You should also be courageous. Always try new things and never be afraid of making mistakes.
Like every other student, I also want to graduate, not necessarily to get out of this jungle but to evolve from it, learn from my mistakes, and start to build my future. To achieve this I am willing to do anything, pay any price, and spend the longest hours in one room finishing my requirements. I am willing to study for long hours, even “listen” to the most boring teachers and self-study afterwards. I am willing to wait years more, enduring the jungle around me, swinging from vine to vine, travelling from tree to tree, and trying to soar high.
That is how I will see UPIS from above the canopy. / by Storm Gatchalian
Opinion (Submission): Above the Canopy
