The University of the Philippines Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry held seminar-workshops on mental health for University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) students on October 28 for Grades 7-9 and November 18 for Grades 10-12 at the UPIS auditorium.

Between plenary sessions in the workshop for Grades 10-12 titled WOKE 2: Wellness Optimization in K-12 Education 2, the batches were separated into parallel sessions to discuss depression and anxiety with different speakers to fully scope the topic.

The first parallel session was on anxiety. Dr. Maria Cristina Diaz gave its definition, talked about the signs and symptoms, evaluation of general anxiety disorder, and how it can be minimized. Before the lecture ended, a breathing exercise was taught to the students to help manage anxiety.

The second lecture, which talked about depression, was given by Dr. Joanna Marie Bucaycay. Symptoms for depression, evaluation, medications, and how to help someone going through with it were what the discussion mostly focused on.

After the small group discussions, the students were ushered back to the auditorium for the final lecture given by Dr. Constantine Yu Chua. It tackled ways of generally improving one’s mental health and interventions.

After the program, each student was asked to write something that they wanted to say to themselves or others and post it on a wall to remind them about what they learned in the seminar.

The “Integrating Mental Health Practices in the School Setting: Building Positive Support for Students’ Well-being” program is hosted in collaboration with the Department of Student Services and is aimed to help students deepen their understanding of mental health.

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) showed support for the program by providing snacks and drinks.

A prior seminar was also held for teachers while a seminar for parents is currently being planned. //by Jelena Evangelista & Ria Amano
