A new UP Gawad Plaridel recipient: Boni Ilagan
The University of the Philippines (UP) awarded Mr. Bonifacio Parabuac Ilagan the Gawad Plaridel 2019 last November 20, 2019 at the UP Film Center.
UP System and the UP College of Mass Communication awards the Gawad Plaridel annually to outstanding media practitioners who have excelled in media and have shown exceptional dedication and passion. Last year, it was Ms. Ma. Jessica Soho for journalism and this year, Mr. Bonifacio Parabuac Ilagan or “Boni Ilagan” was given the award under the transmedia category.
Mr. Boni Ilagan, who received recognition from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Centennial Honors for the Arts, Gawad Balagtas, Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, Film Academy of the Philippines, Star Awards, and many more, was chosen to be the recipient of the Gawad Plaridel 2019 for showing his passionate commitment and dedication to advancing art and media through his plays, documentaries, films, and writeups.
Dr. Michael L. Tan, UP Chancellor, gave the opening remarks. Dr. Elena E. Pernia, UP Vice President for Public Affairs, then gave a message before showing a short film “Sinipi kay Boni” directed and written by Carlo “Choy” Pangilinan which was about Mr. Boni Ilagan’s life from when he was still in UP and an active member of an activist group to when he was captured and became a political detainee during Martial Law up to his active years in the film industry. Shortly after the film showing, Vice Pres. Pernia, Chancellor Tan, and Dean Arminda Santiago presented the award to Mr. Boni Ilagan, who delivered a message afterwards.
In his speech, Ilagan talked about his life during the Marcos regime as a UP student, he also talked about how he engaged in different types of media such as radio and movies.
Tuksuhan, Kung Di Rin Lang Ikaw, and Paraiso were performed by the UP Concert Chorus in a special number which was led by Prof. Janet Sabas-Aracama. //by Ria Amano
