The University of the Philippines Integrated School Varsity Swim Team (UPISVST), along with the UPIS Elementary Swimmers, joined the University of the Philippines Varsity Swim Team’s (UPVST) Fourth Friendship Meet on April 7 and 8 at the Rizal Sports Complex, Manila.
Zoe Hilario pocketed two gold medals as she ruled the 100-meter Butterfly and 50-meter Freestyle in Event 216 and 220 Girls Division respectively. Ricielle Maleeka Melencio also took home gold and silver medals in Event 106 200-meter Long Course (LC) Individual Medley and in Event 110 Girls 100-meter Backstroke respectively.
Charize Juliana Esmero and Chloe Fabic finished neck and neck in Event 110 Girls 100-meter Breaststroke, snitching silver medals each. Fabic bagged another silver medal in Event 122 Breaststroke before claiming another one in Event 118 Girls 100-meter LC freestyle along with Esmero who won a bronze medal. Antonio Aquino also went home with a bronze medal in the Event 2017 Boys 15-17 100-meter LC Butterfly.
UPISVST ranked 6th out of the 38 teams that participated as Fabic hustled for 29.5 points while Melencio had 27. Hilario chipped in 20 points as Aquino contributed 16. Esmero also contributed 15.50 points, Julie Anne Mapa with 10, while Isabel Baclig and Gerald Almajar with 3 each.
The competition was a relay of all swimming strokes, namely: butterfly, back, breast, and free-style. It was a clash between age and gender groups, ranging from 11 years old and above.
The event was a fundraising activity organized and handled by UPVST in preparation for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 81. Thirty-eight teams with 400 swimmers in total joined and leaped off in a two-day swimming competition—to hoard not just points and medals— but also experience along the way.
UPISVST’s Aquino explained that the goal of the event was to expose, condition, and develop rookie swimmers as they meet new friends and get along together in a thrilling and friendly way.
“Isa itong magandang oportunidad upang maipakita ng lahat ang kanilang talento at matuklasan ang mga bagay na kailangan pang i-improve,” he added.//by Julius Guevarra Jr.
