feature,
Summer is already here! And you know what that means: handheld fans, face towels, electric fans turned to full speed and, of course, our favorite thirst quenchers and summer treats!
So I researched and asked my fellow school mates what their favorite summer dessert or drink is and made a week’s worth of desserts to try to help chill and brighten your day, especially during the afternoon when the sun is out to burn you down!
MONDAY
This is a rest day for most of us, UPIS students, and what better way to start the week than to drink sweet fruit shakes. Grab your favorite fruit, crushed ice, milk, and a little sugar. Blend them all together and voila, you now have a refreshing summer drink that will cool you down and help you rest the day away.
TUESDAY
You’re surely missing the weekend already and the heat is just not helping. Try eating Mais Con Yelo this time to help you relax a little. The ‘corny' flavor, the sweet condensed milk, and cool shaved ice will surely melt away your longing for the weekend.
Follow this simple recipe and you’ll surely have your own Mais Con Yelo in no time:
1. Place whole kernels sweet corn and cream-style corn in a glass.
2. Add crushed ice.
3. Pour milk and sugar.
4. Mix all ingredients.
WEDNESDAY
It's the middle of the week and there are so many requirements already. Groupmates aren’t cooperating and you're just really trying not to burst out. Cool down with Iskrambol, the strawberry-flavored icy treat with powdered milk, sprinkles, and chocolate syrup will surely bring back nostalgia from childhood.
Are you craving an Iskrambol but can’t find a store nearby? Worry not! Here is an easy recipe for you to follow.
1. Shave ice and add strawberry flavoring.
2. Sprinkle with your favorite toppings.
3. Add chocolate, strawberry or caramel syrup.
THURSDAY
This occurs before the last day of the school week and you can’t wait for the weekend. Take a break and buy sweet and soft monay with ice cream from Mamang Sorbetero across the school.
FRIDAY
After your last class, you cannot wait to unwind and destress from school and everything else. Get your laptop, put on your favorite show, and grab some of that fruit salad you've been saving. Mixed fruits of pineapple, cherries, nata de coco, apples, sweet cream, and condensed milk will make you scream TGIF! (Thank God, It’s Friday!).
Making fruit salad is quite easy; here is a recipe you can follow:
1. Buy a can of mixed fruits, heavy cream, grated cheese, and salt.
2. Mix together in a bowl and chill in the refrigerator.
If you want to add that extra crunch to your salad, layer graham on a flat container and add the mixture of fruits and cream. Layer them alternately until the container is full. Chill for a few hours and serve.
SATURDAY
It’s the weekend but you’re stuck doing homework and you just want a break. Refresh your mind with an easy no-bake Mango Graham cake. The slightly crunchy graham base layered with a sweet condensed milk and the tangy taste of mangoes will put you in a good mood to study.
Here’s how to make it:
1. Prepare your ripe mangoes, condensed milk, whip cream, and graham crackers.
2. Pour cream into a bowl and whip until you have soft peaks. Then add condensed milk.
3. Place a layer of graham crackers into your dish, add cream, spread it, and top it with diced mangoes.
4. Chill for a few hours. Then indulge!
SUNDAY
The time where most Filipino families eat out together for some brunch, where titas and titos will ask about our love life or school. The classic Leche Flan will help sweeten your replies and strengthen your patience. It’s sweet and melt-in-your-mouth texture will surely leave you wanting to come to more family brunches.
These are just some of the desserts that will help you through the week. Always remember to calm down despite the hot weather and stress all around us. However, don’t over eat too much for having too much sugar is not good for the body and always remember to drink lots of water!
Also, remember not to let the summer heat burn you down, fight it by remaining cool headed and of course, by trying the recipes you just learned!//by Vea Dacumos
