Sixteen UPIS students from Grades 10 and 11 took part in the ESTADISTIKA 2019 at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) on February 23.
The theme of the competition was "Connecting Points: Understanding the Role of Economic Statistics in Sustainable Development". Below are the four activities the students joined:
When asked about the competition, Catibog, one of the participants, said, "Na-apply namin ['yung mga natutunan namin] sa SDGs... nakatulong din 'to sa Stat namin ngayon, mas maiintindihan namin 'yung pinag-aaralan namin ngayon." (We were able to apply what we learned about the SDGs... [the event] also helped us in understanding what we are learning right now in Stat.)
Dr. San José, Statistics 10 teacher, also added, "One, [the students can apply] what they are learning in Stat. Another one, it expands the role of statistics... [it is] integrated with other activities outside math."
ESTADISTIKA is an annual contest conducted by the UPLB Statistical Society (STATS). It is currently on its thirteenth year. Schools from different regions in Luzon also joined the said event. //by James Tolosa
