Two elementary and two high school students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) were among the 730 National Capital Region (NCR) students who were given the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) last February 14, 2019.

The awardees were Loviña Mia L. Suguitan (5-Mayon), Marie Emmanuelle B. Martinez (6-Ruby), Angel Ken T. Young (7-Venus), and Marv Lander L. Suguitan (11-Julian A. Banzon).

The YES Award is a DOST institutional award given by the DOST–Science Education Institute (SEI) which aims to give recognition, cultivate, and develop a culture of science among students to motivate them to strive even further for excellence.

The UPIS awardees were notified through a direct letter from DOST distributed by the administration of the school. Demonstrating the high regard for the excellence and competitiveness of students, the sole criteria for receiving the medal of distinction was winning an international science, math and/or robotics competition.

They were among 1, 469 elementary and high school Filipino students who won international competitions in 2018.

When asked if the objectives were met, Young stated, “It [DOST–YES] did fulfill its objective and me and many others were inspired to do our best and keep going.”

“We felt great and awesome! It was surreal but different kasi second time na namin,” M. Suguitan answered after being asked what he felt about receiving the award.

The ceremony was commented on by M. Suguitan to be slightly chaotic due to lack of organization and space at the venue. Even so, the event remained a pleasant memorable experience for Young as he witnessed his friends being awarded with him. //by Magan Basilio, Addie Sajise, and Claire Tamayo
