Three students from the University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) attended National Astronomy Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) ASEAN Astronomy camp on January 25 to 28 at Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Grade 9 students Robert Ambat and Julianne Sasing, and 11th grader Therese Papa were selected to attend the camp.

The program aimed to raise awareness and enhance science and technology education on astronomy, broaden students’ vocational horizons, motivate them to consider their own future participation and roles in the region’s development, and build their career paths in the related fields.

Forty Grades 9 to 12 students from Southeast Asian countries were selected based on a 5-minute video or essay entry that answered a situational question about exploring existence of life in another planet.

The participants had various activities such as stargazing, measuring astronomical distances, and learning the basics of telescope.

“Good experience for the students kasi maganda yung place na pinagdausan ng activities. Secondary purpose lang ng NARIT yung mismong camp. Ang main goal niya ay ma-strengthen yung unity ng mga students around Southeast Asia at makabuo ng alliance for the future generation,” said Mr. Rafael Ibañez, the UPIS students’ adviser and chaperone.

“Super fun and very different yung camp unlike sa mga camps na meron tayo dito sa atin like sa GSP and BSP. May mga nakilala kaming Southeast Asian students. Nagkaroon ng lectures at hands-on activities,” Papa shared.//by Gian Palomeno
