bryan lina,
A forum regarding student activism during the Marcos regime was conducted yesterday, December 1 at the UPIS Ramp Area.
Mr. Francisco Guiang of the UP History Department lectured on the history of the student movement and its role during the Marcos regime. His lecture included an overview on the socioeconomic perspective and circumstances leading to the Martial Law period. He highlighted the height of the student movement prior to Martial Law and he explained the factors that led to the crackdown of overt student activism that boiled down to the declaration of Martial Law.
Meanwhile, Sir Bonifacio Ilagan, convenor of the First Quarter Storm Movement of Martial Law veterans and the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacanang (CARMMA) expressed his personal experiences during Martial Law. He recalled how he was tortured and how his sister became a desaparecido. He stressed to everyone how those events are reasons why he is firm on his belief that the Marcoses should never return to power.
After the lectures, the speakers answered several historical questions and gave clarifications, and sentiments.
The forum was organized by the Pamunuan ng Kamag-aral 7-10 and was attended by several UPIS students during lunch time. // by Bryan Lina, with reports from Chesca Santiago
