A mental health seminar for Batch 2019 was conducted last November 8 at the 4th floor Audio-Visual Room (AVR), University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS).

The talk was conducted by the Youth for Mental Health Coalition, with their National Chairperson Dr. Raymond John Naguit and the Director for Mental Health in UP Zelyn Alyssa Merielle Mirano as the speakers.

The main topic of the seminar was Depression. The speakers discussed the indications of the illness such as suicidal tendencies, oversleeping or insomnia. Another topic discussed was how to address these situations once encountered in yourself or in people you know, and how depression affects everyday life in which you cannot do certain tasks that you normally do. They also reminded the students to become more cautious especially things that may trigger serious problems such as self-harm and suicide. Also, the speakers shared the importance of having a healthy mind because it affects a person's personality and wellbeing. After the discussion, there was a forum where they answered questions from several students on what is the best thing to do in certain situations.

“We also have to be accountable for the things we say in our daily lives. Kasi madali lang magpacounduct ng forums at trainings but to actually live it on a daily basis, yan ang harder part of the advocacy,” Dr. Naguit said as a final reminder for the students. The speakers also emphasized the importance of acceptance and consideration, especially for people who fight with their mental disorders.//by Alex Yangco, Vea Dacumos and Drenisse Moleta
