UP Integrated School (UPIS) Batch 2019 finished their 2-week internship at different colleges, departments, and units in UP Diliman from October 8 to 19.

Due to the new K-12 curriculum, Grade 12 students had a work immersion to gain experience in their chosen fields and to help them decide on the career path they will eventually take in the future.

Grade 12-Kalayaan, the Social Sciences and Humanities track, partnered with Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS), College of Arts and Letters (CAL), College of Mass Communication (CMC), College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD), Diliman Information Office (DIO), Interactive Learning Center Diliman (ILCD), and Sentro ng Wikang Filipino (SWF) as the students’ internship sites.

Majority of their work consisted of writing articles and research papers, editing publication materials, broadcasting on radio, shelving books, creating book reviews, organizing events and programs, backstage and marketing work for a play, and other office and clerical work.

Roan Ticman from Grade 12-Kalayaan shared her thoughts about the difference between internship and school work.

Grade 12-Karunungan, the Applied Sciences and Engineering track, worked as interns at the College of Architecture (CA), College of Engineering’s (CE) Department of Computer Science, Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (DMMME), Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute (EEEI), and Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE), College of Home Economics (CHE), College of Science’s (CS) Marine Science Institute (MSI), Information Technology Development Center (ITDC), ILCD, and University Health Service (UHS).

Their work included rotating in different laboratories which taught them new concepts and required them to do hands-on experiments. They were also tasked to do researches and programs which they presented to their supervisors and the faculty. Some of them experienced checking patients’ vital signs, inspecting proper sanitation and dietary standards in a hospital.

Baka madala ko ‘yon sa totoong buhay, natuto akong makiramdam, in a sense, [at] maghanap pa ng mga bagay sa work ko na pwede pang makatulong [na] gawin [ang] outside [ng] pinagawa sa akin,” said Bea Media from Grade 12-Karunungan, when asked about what she learned from her internship site.

Grade 12-Katapatan, then Business and Entrepreneurship track, gained work experience from Balay Internasyonal, CHE Tea Room, Restaurant of Choice (ROC), University Hotel (UH), UP Accounting Office (UPAO), UP Alumni Association Office (UPAAO), and UP Procurement Office (UPPO).
Their internship activities consisted of working in restaurants wherein they listed orders and served customers, prepared food, and did some inventory. Some of them also experienced procuring, auditing, and computing tax reconciliation.

[...] Naging ready [na ako] sa reality,” Adriel Alcantara from Grade 12-Katapatan shared on how the internship helped him with his career path.

Before the students chose their internship sites, an orientation was held to give them a background of the kind of work done in the different sites.

Grade 12 students will share their internship experiences with Grade 11 pupils on November 29. This aims to help the latter choose their on-campus internship sites next academic year.//by Nicole Desierto and Geraldine Tingco
