The University of the Philippines Integrated School Girls Volleyball Team (UPISGVT) puts on a spectacular show in the Inter School Athletic and Academic League (ISAAL) held on August 19 and 20 at Kings Montessori School and Hope Integrated School, Quezon City.
The UPISGVT completely dominated in the first day of the event after showing no mercy to their opponents in this year’s ISAAL. In the Under-16 Division, the UPISGVT overthrew St. Raphael Montessori School (SRMS) in a best-of-3 sets, 25-4, 25-8. On the other hand, Coronado’s School of Quezon City Incorporated (CSQCI) put up a good fight but was not enough to stop UPISGVT’s power from ruling the stadium in the Under-18 Division best-of-3 sets, 25-18, 25-21.
Following up the previous day, UPISGVT crushed Mother of Divine Grace Academy (MODGA) before finally calling it a day, 25-15, 25-5, on a rainy afternoon last August 20. UPISGVT gave MODGA a hard time catching up in the first set with their strained coordination and counters until the board flips to a score of 10-4. MODGA silently regained balance but was swiftly shoved away by UPISGVT as they accelerated their pace and shot multiple strikes with Maria Lorraine Cometa on the lead, 25-15.
UPISGVT kept their perfect score alive, 14-0, with Team Captain Trixie Badong’s sharp service aces and spikes in the second set until the numbers progressed yet again to walk away with another victory, 25-5.
Soon after, Covenant Grace School (CGS) was swept by UPISGVT in their third match without breaking a sweat as CGS committed multiple errors followed by Alyssa Avila’s flashy service aces, Bea Lopez’s stunning block, and Ghia Marielle Bartolome’s whistling spike to accumulate a 25-7 in the first set.
UPISGVT’s confidence grew exponentially to finally exploit their enemy’s rhythm in the second set, finishing it off with a terrifying 25-9.
Set-backs also deemed to cling tightly to UPISGVT in their battle against the First City Providential College (FCPC) and Kings Montessori School (KMS). UPISGVT was able to compete with FCPC but came short in the end as FCPC started the day with a 20-25, 21-25 win.
The struggle continued for UPISGVT with KMS’s amusing first set, ending it in a lopsided score of 25-9. KMS started the second set strong, 8-1. However, UPISGVT found their rhythm and the opponent’s big lead disappeared quickly due to unforced errors along with Alliah Omar’s blocks and Giesha Capistrano’s offenses.
With Lopez’s service aces and Avila and Capistrano’s contributions to rallies, UPISGVT was able to close the gap in the second set at 19-19. Omar joined to help the team make the score even at 23 but still fell short as KMS finishes the game, 23-25.
UPISGVT Head Coach Andy Fiel pointed out the overall team’s performance especially on the defensive end of their game. “Sa laro, medyo kulang pa. Sa estimate ko, kailangan pa naming mag-practice pa on defense; ‘yung blocking namin lahat maayos. ‘Yung service nila kailangan mas high percentage. We have a lot of work to do.”
“Next games, kailangan ayos yung blockings namin. Number one ‘yung coordination sa blocking. Second overall, ‘yung defense kailangan gumanda. Kailangan mas mataas ‘yung level of competition. They need to focus more on playing better defense. Mas ganado sila dapat dumepensa, ‘yun ang habol ko.” he added.
“Ginagawa namin ang mga training para ma-develop pa lalo ang skills namin, at siyempre, kailangan may consistency. Siguro kailangan pa rin namin ma-iimprove ang mindset at attitude namin, kasi kadalasan nawawala ‘yung flow ng laro,” said UPISGVT’s Team Captain Badong.
“Ginawa ko best ko. Tulong-tulong kami, siyempre gusto namin manalo kaya binigay namin lahat,” Giesha Capistrano said. “Gustong-gusto ko talaga manalo kanina at nag-eenjoy din ako kasama sila,” she added.//by Julius Guevarra Jr. and Gian Palomeno
