Sa pagpasok ng Akademikong Taong 2012-2013, may mga bagong alituntuning ipinatupad sa ating paaralan- ang pagbabalik sa 4-day schedule ng mga klase, muling pagkakaroon ng handbook, at ang pagpapalawak ng kampanya sa environmental protection. Inintrodyus din sa taong ito ang computerized system sa mga rekord ng mga mag-aaral nang sa gayon ay maging mas mabilis ang pag-eencode ng mga grado at maiwasan ang pagkakamali sa paglalagay ng mga ito sa report card at permanent record.

Kaugnay ng mga pagbabagong ito, napagdesisyunan din na sa halip na report card, quarter stubs na ang ipamimigay sa pagtatapos ng unang tatlong markahan. Kung minsan kasi, nakaliligtaang isauli ng mga bata ang report card. Ang iba naman ay nawawala ito kung kaya’t kailangan pang bayaran upang mapalitan. May mga mag-aaral din na nagsasauli ng marumi at nalukot nang card. Upang maiwasan ang madalas na pagpapalit nito dahil sa mga nabanggit na dahilan, minabuti ng administrasyon na stubs na lamang ang ibigay. Ang report card ay makukuha ng mga mag-aaral sa dulo ng akademikong taon, pagkatapos ng ikaapat na markahan.

Ipinaalam ni Prop. Roselle Velasquez, Katuwang na Prinsipal Pang-Akademiko, sa mga guro, kawani, at magulang sa pamamagitan ng isang sulat noong Agosto 22, 2012, ang itsura ng stubs na ipamimigay noong Setyembre 14. Maliban sa mga detalye ng stubs na makukuha, malinaw ring nakalagay sa liham na maaaring kunin ng mga estudyante ang kani-kanilang stubs kung: (a) wala siyang bagsak sa anumang asignatura; (b) walang incomplete; at (c) kung sakaling may incomplete, maaari pa rin itong makuha ng bata kung siya’y magpapakita ng liham-pahintulot mula sa kanyang magulang.

Umani ng kabi-kabilang batikos mula sa mga guro, magulang, at mag-aaral ang itsura ng stubs at sistema ng pamimigay nito. Di gaya ng report card na nasa matigas na papel, malaki ang font, at kumpleto sa mga detalye, ang mga stubs ay nasa porma ng isang ¼ na piraso ng papel kung saan naka-imprenta ang mga grado ng estudyante. Dagdag pa rito ang iba’t ibang laki ng mga stub- may maliit, may malaki, at may ilan na hindi pa pantay-pantay ang pagkakagupit. Hindi rin nakalagay sa stubs ang transmutation table at ang attendance ng bata. Pahirap pa sa mga magulang ang masyadong maliit na font size na ginamit kung kaya’t may mga pagkakataon na kailangan pang basahin ng mga guro sa mga magulang ang marka ng estudyante.

Mas mainam kung nanatiling mga report card ang ipinamimigay bawat markahan. Una, pormal, higit na presentable, at opisyal na dokumento kung kaya’t binibigyan ng ibayong pag-iingat ng mga estudyante. Kung stubs pa rin ang ipamimigay, dapat gawin man lang kasing-pormal ng report card.

Kasama rin dapat ang mga magulang sa pagkuha ng stubs. Bakit? Una, layunin ng pagbibigay ng report kard ang personal na maiparating ng guro sa mga magulang hindi lamang ang academic concerns kundi maging behaviour ng mga mag-aaral. Nangangahulugan lamang na may bagsak ka man, incomplete o wala, kailangan pa ring magkausap ang mga guro at mga magulang. Ikalawa, sa mga panahong ito nagkakaroon ng regular at bukas na pakikipagdayalogo ang mga magulang sa guro ng kani-kanilang mga anak..

Kung pahihintulutan pa rin ang mga mag-aaral na makuha ang kanilang stubs, paano na ang komunikasyon sa pagitan ng guro at magulang na regular na nagaganap tuwing bigayan ng kard? Ikalawa, maaaring itago ng mag-aaral sa kani-kanilang magulang ang kanilang grado at hindi na matututukan pa ng mga ito ang gawaing pang-akademiko ng kanilang mga anak. Hindi na rin makakapagkonsulta ang mga magulang tungkol sa behaviour at iba pang concerns ng mga ito kaugnay ng performance, attendance, at behaviour ng mga bata. May mga guro rin na nagsabing mainam kung may reply slip man lang na kalakip ang bawat stub upang masigurado na nakarating ito sa mga magulang.

Alalahanin nating may karapatan ang mga magulang na malaman ang katayuan ng kanilang mga anak sa paaralan. Ayon sa mga guro at mag-aaral, higit na mabuti para sa lahat lalo na sa mga mag-aaral ng UPIS na ibalik ang nakagawiang sistema ng pagpapakita ng grado – ito’y dapat nasa anyo ng isang card.
Hindi dapat isantabi ang karapatan ng mga magulang na malaman ang kakayahan ng kanilang mga anak sa bawat sabjek. Ito’y para rin sa kapakanan ng mga estudyante at ng buong paaralan. Wala ring sinumang magulang o tagapag-alaga ang nagnanais na mapabayaan ang edukasyon ng kanilang mga anak.

This year, the UP Cherubim and Seraphim (UPCS), official children's choir of UP Diliman, is celebrating 41 years of making beautiful music.

Founded by Prof. Flora Zarco Rivera in September 21, 1971 with 20 elementary students from the College of Music's Saturday Music Extension Program, the UPCS concluded their yearlong anniversary celebration with a reunion concert entitled Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika at the Abelardo Hall, UP Diliman last September 21.

Five generations of Cherubim members performed together on stage singing the group's all-time favourite songs.

The regular members of the group opened the concert with a European repertoire which includes Johann Sebastian Bach's Wir Eilen Mitschwachen doch Emsigen Schritten.

Part Two was composed of three Nationalistic songs with music written by Carlos Pizzaro. The songs were based on poems Sa Aking mga Kabata by Jose Rizal, Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa by Andres Bonifacio, and a debut song Unang Daing ni Florante based on Francisco Balagtas' Florante at Laura.

The third part of the concert was pop-themed which consisted of three songs by Stephen Schwartz namely We Beseech Thee, For Good, and Corner of the Sky, and You Raise Me Up by Brendan Grahan and Rolf Lovland.

For the fourth part, the Apprentices and Alumni joined the Regulars for the round song Alleluia by Michael Preatorius. The Apprentices also had their own section wherein they sang traditional songs Praise and Thanksgiving and We Merry Mistrels for their first public appearance.

The spotlight then focused on the Alumni when they sang Sa Lupang Sarili by Lucio San Pedro.

The Regulars then came back on stage with the Alumni for the last three songs of the fourth part consisting of Ramon P. Santos' Handog sa Ina, Odina Batnag's I am but a Small Voice and Ryan Cayabyab's Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika.

The world’s most successful and popular musical, and the longest-running show on Broadway – Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera- continues to grace the Philippines with its musical glory. The show premiered last August 25 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater in Manila and is extended until October 14, 2012. To date, the show has been seen by over 130 million people worldwide, in more than 27 countries, has won over 50 major theatre awards, and has banked more than $ 5.6 billion.

Set in a Paris opera house, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a disfigured musical genius and composer known as 'The Phantom' who haunts the opera house. The Phantom (played by Jonathan Roxmouth) is mesmerized by the beautiful and beguiling Christine Daaé (played by Claire Lyon), a young soprano.

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most popular theatre classics. It is combination of love, passion, jealousy, sorrow, and a bit of violence. Though it dwells on the dark side of the theatre life, it is still a story very much relatable- especially considering the romantic nature of Filipinos.

When it comes to musical score, The Phantom of the Opera is nothing but brilliant. The cast was also amazing. Their voices added life and depth into the already beautiful songs. Rouxmouth was especially outstanding. His voice projection was great while his singing was very clear and full of emotion. Other actors like Lyon, and Anthony Downing also gave amazing performances. In addition, the casting of Filipino tenor Dondi Ong as Piangi gives a sense of Pinoy pride.

The grand designs of both costumes and stage contributed a lot to the impact of the show. Special effects also heightened the emotions for each scene.

From its stellar performances, to the breathtaking costumes, flamboyant stage design and heartfelt music the Phantom of the Opera promises to deliver nothing but world class experience. Paolo Doronila of grade 3-Dagat ranked 4th in the NCR search for outstanding KAB Scouts held at the University of Makati last September 21.

According to Ms. Cha Guerrero, one of the kawan leaders, after going through the process, he was announced 3rd runner-up and was also awarded Best in Formal Attire. Doronila competed against 12 other scouts.

UPIS dominates DLSZ in UAAP season-ender

The UPIS Junior Fighting Maroons ended their Season 75 campaign on a high note after pulling off a 63-52 victory over the De La Salle Zobel (DLSZ) Junior Archers at the San Juan Arena last September 23.

After being down by 1, 7-8, in a closely-fought low-scoring first quarter, a jumper by Aaron Lina started a UPIS scoring spree in the second. Drawing good scoring games from juniors Diego Dario and Benz Nacpil, and senior Paolo Ancheta, the Junior Maroons went on a 15-0 run to race to a dozen point lead at the end of the first half, 24-12.

The Junior Archers brought the UPIS lead down to 8, 24-16, after converting back-to-back baskets to start the third quarter. But the Junior Maroons took advantage of DLSZ’s early penalty, converting 10 of 15 free throws. Jozhua General scored a buzzer-beating putback to put UPIS in the lead by 13, 42-29, after three quarters.

There was no looking back for the Junior Maroons as they established the biggest lead of the game at 15, 46-31, with still 8 minutes left in the game, after Dario converted 1 of 2 at the line off a hard foul committed by a DLSZ player.

It was an emotional win for the Junior Maroons, especially for the graduating players, Ancheta, Lina, Juanito Gregorio, Vince Quejada, and Russell Mercado who played together at the 1:30 mark to finish the game.

UPIS ends the season at 6th place with a 4-10 win-loss record, a marked improvement from their 1-13 win-loss card last year. ● CCCA

They say curiosity killed the cat.

Well, it did way more than that.
When I first saw him, I was star struck.
Sparkling grey eyes.
Dark tousled hair.
Broad shoulders.
Calm yet distant look.

I thought who is this guy? Who is this handsome, mysterious creature standing five feet away from me? This seemingly wild and dangerous yet at the same time safe and tame being. What else could I do but fall for him?

I spent many nights thinking about him, wondering where he was from, who he is, what he was like… I couldn’t get him out of my head.

When I finally got the courage to approach him, I was eccentric. He had such a deep, rustic voice that just melted my heart. I couldn’t believe it. He was talking to me, staring with those intense eyes.

I felt so… alive.

We spent weeks chatting, talking, laughing. The closer we got to each other, the more my feelings grew. I was smitten-head over heels in love.

I thought he was, too.

Until one day, he told me. Trust me, I wish he never did.

How could I have been so blind? Someone like that, someone like him? It was too perfect. Too good to be true. Of course he liked someone else. Of course he’s planning to propose to her. Of course he is.

They say curiosity killed the cat.

Stars and Juniors hold annual investiture

The UPIS Star Scouts and Junior Girl Scouts held their annual investiture ceremonies last Sept. 24 at the Multi-Purpose Hall.

The Stars from Grades 1-3 had a joint investiture led by troop leaders Ms. Angela Macaraeg and Ms. Sharon Aguila. Later in the afternoon, the Juniors led by Ms. Glaiza Cruz invested 11 new scouts and rededicated more than 50 former junior girl scouts.


Both programs were opened by Dr. Ronaldo San Jose, UPIS principal. In her message, the guest speaker, Mrs. Estela Gonzales from the GSP Council, commended the UPIS scouts for their dedication and encouraged them to be continue being active in scouting activities.


All in all, six new parent and troop leaders were invested in both Star and Junior Scouts namely Bernadette Angeles, Christie Manantab, Suzanne Licuanan, Mary Justine Amonoy, Helanay Ariola and Patricia Santos. ● by Rya Ducusin and Joanna Pagulayan

Gelera brings home Math Wiz title

Christian Philip Gelera of 6-Garnet was crowned the 2012 Little Math Wizard during the 3rd Region-wide Search for the Little Math Wizard held at the UP Math Building last September 15.

Gelera bested all his competitors in the four-round competition, making him the over-all champion.

Nathan Arthur Banatao, Zeidrich Monares, John Henry Marquez, Sean Albert Gelera and Jastin Cedric Cruz also joined the grade 5 level but only Banatao, Monares and Marquez qualified for the semi-final round.

UPIS Grade 6 students win in MathSciAka 2012

Several UPIS elementary and high school students participated in the MathSciAka 2012 held at the PHILVOLCS auditorium in UP Diliman last September 22, 2012.

The event was divided into several categories including a series of take-home experiments, an extemporaneous speech contest for high school students, a slogan-making contest for elementary students, and an interactive workshop.

Grade 6 student Phil Bryan Cosep won first place in the take-home “Organic Battery” experiment while the his batchmates Patience Ventura, Craig Alexander Aquino, and Zeidrich Monares won third place in the interactive workshop of the elementary division.

Moe Moe Kyun!

This is a familiar expression for anime geeks or otakus. It can be heard and read in animes and mangas, particularly in maid cafes.

Maid cafes, which originated in Japan, have been a popular event for many anime fanatics. From the word itself, maid cafes are places where people could eat and hang out with maids and butlers as their waiter.

Last September 13, the UP Anime and Manga Enthusiasts (UP AME) held their yearly AME week which included their very own Maid and Butler Cafe at the Vargas Hall.

The Amadare Cafe offers a variety of maids and butlers that will serve and entertain you. At each table, one butler or maid is assigned to wait on customers for 20 minutes.

There are different types of maids and butlers: the refined, the tsundere, and the imouto or otouto. The customers will choose one type and that maid or butler will serve them according to the personality that the customers request.

The first, which is the refined maid or butler, is a calm, smart and professional-looking type. The second, which is the tsundere maid or butler, is a snobbish hard-to-get type. The last, which is the imouto or otouto maid or butler, is a little sister or little brother type. Some examples of the butlers you can choose from are 4chan, Sean, Larc, Nigel and Gina, who is a crossdresser.

The Amadare Cafe also has sets of meals to choose from - some of which are full course while some are snacks. One of the meals they have is the "Signal No. 4" which consists of nachos as appetizer, two onigiris or rice balls as main course, a choice of smores or candied orange with cake as dessert and orange juice for drinks. They also have the "Rainbow Set" which is a "merienda" set that offers smores or candied orange with cake and a cold drink.

We commend the Amadare Cafe for the food and service that are closely similar to the ones in Japan.

In the previous years, the UP AME held their AME week during the second semester but they moved it to the first semester to give way to their annual grand event to be held in February 2013.

I took everything indifferently and avoided anything that would remind me of the boy who broke my heart into a million pieces—especially that certain street which held a heartrending memory of a goodbye I knew I couldn’t bear.

I thought I was coping well... until I saw him today.

The girl's hand was entangled in his while he was staring at her eyes--the same way he stared at mine back when I was still the owner of his heart. The way they looked at each other crushed my already crushed fragile little heart. My eyes lingered at him, every detail of him. Nothing had changed except the fact that he looked happier. Every part of me started to go numb but I gathered my strength and absconded from the excruciating sight.

I walked and walked until the heels felt so very sore that I couldn’t walk anymore. I landed on the gutter of a familiar street that I had eluded for a year and clutched my chest to at least catch the debris from my shattered heart. It was then when I realized that my tears had already escaped from my eyes.

We fought again. Me and my daughter. It wasn’t much of a fight really. It was mostly her, shouting. My baby girl, shouting at me because I wouldn’t let her go to that school in Amsterdam.

I don’t want to lose her. She probably doesn’t know about Ed. Shot by some punk in London while he was walking back to his dorm. I just don’t want to lose her.

Red light signals a stop. I have a gallon of ice cream in the passenger’s seat. One hundred thousand in my wallet, down payment for that school in the Netherlands. I hope she’ll forgive me. I guess I can let go of her. She’s old enough. The ice cream is melting.

I slammed the door.

I’m out of the fight. All the screaming has taken a toll on me. I just cry on my pillow and wait for the pain to subside.

I just don’t get why he won’t let me go. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime.

Although, Dad did decide to stay here for me. We kept moving and I just wanted something stable.

The thought makes me cry harder.



Green light. Slight pressure on the gas pedal. Slow motion. A bright light by my left. Someone didn’t stop at the red light.

Maybe it’s my turn to think of Dad. Maybe it’s okay if I stay here for another year. It won’t be that bad. I should make it up to Dad.

The truck’s coming my way. I just don’t want to lose her.

I’ll call the school...

Literary: Fur Elise

It was six in the evening then. I was staring at bare parking lot, bored with my life and almost frantic. Mom’s car hasn’t pulled up yet.

I decided to walk around the campus to calm myself down. I have been sitting on the bench for about an hour and it felt good to stretch my legs and take a walk.

The school was empty. It felt eerie walking alone down the corridors all by myself. The early evening breeze chilled my skin as I roam around.

I passed by the music room to see if someone is still there since I saw the lights were on when I was in the other corridor.

“Excuse me," I said quietly and knocked, half expecting a ghost to answer me.

To my surprise, someone opened the door.


“Yes?” he answered.

“Uhm, nothing. I just wondered who was in the room. Sorry to disturb,” I said.

“No, you weren’t. Would you like to hear me play?” he offered with a smile.

I smiled back and followed him to the piano. It was awkward, for the both of us I guess, having met each other for the first time.

He sat on the piano chair and started to fiddle with the white and black keys.

I stared at him for a few moments and realized that his eyes were sad. It was like he just finished crying before I came in.

He played Fur Elise, one of my favorite pieces. I noticed his hands gracefully tapping the keys.

The UPIS Peer Facilitators Club (PFC) had their annual training workshop last September 17 at the school library’s Audio-Visual Room.

This workshop aims to enhance club members’ leadership and counselling skill through activities such as team building, committee planning, and evaluation.

The training tackled the definition of peer helping, function, roles, principles, and code of ethics. Also, the discussion touched the essentials of being and working as a team.

Jemuel Aberin, Nikki Diaz, and Reagene Fernando from the UPIS Fencing Team made it to the Direct Eliminations of the Vicious Braniac Fencing (VBF) Feisty Fun Fest last September 16 at The Celebrity Sports Plaza.

With 3 wins, Fernando ranked 9th in the Women's Foil division while Aberin ranked 12th in the Men's division.

Juniors Jibreel Fernandez, and Bertram Matabang also competed in the Men’s Foil division in the morning. Mikee Neri joined Diaz and Fernando in the Women’s Foil division in the afternoon. Rafael Flores also competed in the afternoon in the Men’s Sabre division. ● by Miguel Flores

Itinalaga at nanumpa ang mga bagong boy scouts at senior scouts noong Agosto 31, sa ganap na 5:30 ng hapon, sa Multi-Purpose Hall.

Ito ang kauna-unahang pagkakataon na magkasamang itinalaga at nanumpa ang mga boy scouts at mga senior scouts ng UPIS para mas makita ang integrasyon ng mga organisasyon at ang brotherhood ng mga iskawt. “Mas maganda tignan na iisa lamang ang mga boy scouts. Walang naggagalingan, walang nagpapataasan.” sabi ni Prop. Mikael Dela Cerna.

Nahati ang programang ito sa dalawang parte. Una, ang palatuntunan o ang pormal na panimula ng programa. Sumunod naman ang mismong pagtatalaga sa mga bagong boy scouts at senior scouts.

Nagkaroon din ng isang talumpati ang guest speaker na si G. Jaccob-Josephson Caones tungkol sa pag-aabot ng tagumpay at kahalagahan ng iskawting sa buhay. Inilahad din sa kanyang talumpati ang kanyang mga tagumpay bilang isang iskawt at nagnanais na maging inspirasyon ito para sa iba pang mga iskawt. Si G. It seems like such a long time ago. Like an old book with faded words… The memory’s details are lost and the only thing I can recall is what I felt. But it always felt like more of a dream than a memory. A dream that I scorn, yet hold close because I had to remind myself of my past and my mistake. At times, I think about it and wonder… Wonder about what-ifs and maybes, even though I know it won't change anything.

I was drawn to a dizzying bright light. Drunk with thoughts of bliss and euphoria, I ran after that fickle and fleeting dream. It always, always slipped through my fingers. It danced around and escaped every effort I made to capture it.

I was like a madman. No… I was a madman. I never took any notice of my surroundings, to the little things that should have mattered. I brushed off every worried remark and ignored the disappointed frowns. I just wanted to chase after my so-called ‘happiness’. I told myself it was the right thing to do.

I was so lost that I could hardly remember what I did. I only know that I kept chasing after that bright light. It was the only thing in my mind and it became my sole reason for living.

But I tripped and stumbled on the rough path. The pain shook me, waking me up and the haze cleared from my mind. I sat up and looked around. I realized I was in a strange place and I was surrounded by unfamiliar faces. I looked up and saw the light. It sneered (NOTE: lights can't sneer) at me and I finally saw the light for what it truly was… it was evil.

Pure evil that successfully seduced me into insanity. It tricked me and used me! It belittled me for my attempts and scorned me with its sharp words! I was nothing to it. Nothing but a fool.

I was shocked, silent… Was this the dream I chased for so long? Where was the happiness it had promised me a long, long time ago?

No matter how much I tried to rise again my attempts always resulted in me falling and crashing to the ground. The cruel thing laughed over and over again. It hurt so much. I thought I couldn’t be saved. I thought I would never be happy again. I thought I would never get my life back. So I gave up… I just laid there, awaiting my fate. The evil left me to die. And I thought I would die in this cold place, surrounded by hundreds of strangers.

Suddenly, warm hands helped me stand up and loving eyes looked at me worriedly. They brushed away the dirt that clung to my body. Murmurs of comfort and support filled my ears like a long-forgotten lullaby. And it was so caring and so, so warm. I couldn’t help myself and I started to cry. They held me in their arms as my tears tried to tell them what my lips and tongue failed to say.

“I’m sorry. I wish I hadn’t been so stupid. Please. I want to go home now. I want to sleep on my own bed. I want to see those loving smiles again. Please. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

They understood.

I realized I was too blinded to see the people who loved me, too blinded to see that they cared all along. I spent a huge part of my life chasing happiness. However, I now know that my happiness was beside me all along. ● Submitted by Paper Crane

The UPIS English Club - Forum was invited to watch the championship round of the 25th annual UP Pi Sigma Fraternity Open Debate tournament last September 11, 2012 at the Malcolm Theater, Malcom Hall UP Diliman.

The affirmative side from the UP Manila Debate Circle and the negative side from UP Diliman’s Indie A debated on the proposition “RH bill should be implemented for the better of women.”

Each side had two speakers and a scribe. The speakers were given 7 minutes each to give their speeches and were then asked questions for 3 minutes. After all speeches and questions, each speaker gave rebuttals. The jury consisting of 7 professors decided that the negative side won.

The UPIS Scrabble Team placed second out of 16 schools in the Milo Little Olympics Scrabble Tournament last September 8 and 9 at the Marikina Sports Building.

The format of the competition was “The King of the Hill,” wherein the number of wins and losses are counted before the competitive spread. Their ranking is represented by their table number. The UPIS team of Diego Manansala, Angelo Nueva, Regie dela Cruz, Anthony Gososo, and Eric Rarugal has always been placed either at the 1st or 2nd table.

The final 4 schools competed in the championship rounds on September 9 wherein the UPIS Scrabble Team scored 7 wins and 5 losses in the 3-round championship match.

Members of the UPIS Track and Field Team raced to a 4th place finish at the Milo Little Olympics held at the Philippine Sports Complex on September 8 and 9.

Jaime Mejia of 9-Neon won the most medals for the team, getting a silver for the 110m hurdles, and two gold medals, for the 100m and 200m dash. Emerson Sandoval of 9-Argon also bagged bronze for shotput.

Volleybelles get back-to-back wins

The UPIS Girls Volleyball Team won two games in a row at the Diliman Games last September 8 at the UP Gym.

They got their first win by default against the College of Mass Communication and clinched their second victory by defeating the team of Asian Institute of Technology and College of Arts and Letters (AIT-CAL).

UPIS Volleybelles dominated the first set and won it easily, 25 – 13.

After a very good performance in the 1st set, the girls lost their focus entering the 2nd set allowing AIT-CAL to win the set, 25-22, and tying the game, 1 set apiece.

AIT-CAL continued their run and took the lead early in the deciding set. But after numerous service aces from Trizia Badong, UPIS was able to strike back and win it, 15 – 12. ● by Dara Lilang, Eric Madriaga

Six grade 10 students were invited to participate in the National Youth Congress held at the UP Asian Center last September 1.

Arvy Mena, Rendelle Rafin, CJ Hernandez, Zena del Mundo, Christine Prieto, and Sam Llaguno attended the National Youth Congress which seeks to encourage students to learn more about the field of economics and inform them about what is happening in our society.

This year’s theme was “Pedalling towards Prosperity: The Pursuit for Progressive Development.”

UPIS tops PSO elims

Two UPIS teams qualified for the final round of the Philippine Science Olympiad 2012 after topping the ranks in the elimination round held last September 8 at the Angelicum College.

The Philippine Science Olympiad is organized by the Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs. It is divided into Bracket I (Elementary) and Bracket II (High school).

The UPIS students who participated in Bracket I were Jarod De Luna, Henry Marquez and Bertrand Diola. Their team was able to place in the top 20 for national level and top 3 for NCR level. As for the UPIS participants in Bracket II, seniors Mariel de Luna, Zena del Mundo, and Christine Prieto were able to place in the top 20 for National level and top 2 for NCR level.

The Olympiad quiz bee is an exam taken individually by each student. The scores they got from the test were added to the scores of their group mates, and were ranked according to the total score of the students in each school.

Ipinakita ng mga mag-aaral ang iba’t ibang kasuotan sa Pilipinas. Para sa grado 3, kasuotan mula sa Katagalugan, kasuotan naman mula sa Mindanao ang para sa grado 4, kasuotan mula sa Silangang Pilipinas para sa grado 5 at kasuotan mula sa Visayas para sa grado 6.

Batches 2015 and 2018 blasts off in Acque 2012

"How do you organize a party in space? You PLANET."

Batch 2015 and 2018 got acquainted through their outer-space themed Acquaintance Party entitled "Blast Off" which was held last August 25 in the Multi-Purpose Hall.

The party aims to unite and introduce the said batches to each other through various activities and to promote respect as well. These objectives were presented along with other vital information in "Mission Control" which opened the party.

Since the acquaintance party was meant for the freshmen, the Grade 8 students decided to do a blue plate service type of lunch where the sophomores served the freshmen personally, as opposed to the typical buffet service. This was also done for organization and efficiency.

The event lasted for more than 3 hours and was filled with various activities and performances from both batches. Afterwards, they did a little 'unity dance' which was choreographed by some sophomores namely Juneau Villanueva, Rafael De Peralta, and Ryan Cacho, among others. ● by Paolo Aljibe and Dara Lilang

The Kamag-Aral (KA) 3-6 has many activities lined up for the rest of the semester.

According to Prof. Michelle Sonza, KA 3-6 adviser, tickets for their Chocolate Raffle, the KA fundraiser for this semester, are being sold by members of the organization. At stake is a pound of Hershey's Chocolate for the 1st prize, Toblerone™ for the 2nd while a Crunch™ for the 3rd. The tentative draw date is on September 19.

The KA 3-6 officers are also preparing for UN day, an event to be held in October. It would feature a food fair wherein different kinds of delicacies from all over the world will be served by each section. There are also plans for a Teachers' Day celebration.

UPIS wins RowBoatics championship

The UPIS team composed of Rafael Luis Aenlle of 9-Neon, Maragtas VII Sano Amante, and Harold Michael Prudencio of 9-Argon won 1st place in the RowBoatics competition at the UP College of Engineering last September 1.

RowBoatics is an inter-high school machine competition which challenges the students to design and build a rubber band-powered watercraft. The event is hosted by the UP Gears and Pinions, a mechanical engineering organization in celebration of their 57th year.

Each team was given only 2 hours to produce a watercraft. The organizer provided them with 4 rubber bands, a ruler, a pair of scissors, masking tape, 10 drinking straws, a long folder, a plastic folder, a marker, 2-feet of steel wire, 10 barbeque sticks, cutter, glue gun with 4 glue sticks, 2 pencils, and Styrofoam.

Aenlle, Amante, and Prudencio were declared champions after scoring 94% with their time of 1.94 seconds. UPIS tries out computerized records system

There's always something new!

Apart from reverting back to 4-day schedule and handbook, the administration has also been trying a computerized system for UPIS students’ records.

Start
According to Prof. Velasquez, the initial idea of the computerized system first started back in 2004 when Dr. Julian Abuso was still Principal and Dr. Ronaldo San Jose was the Assistant Principal. They conducted a trial run and encoded the data using diskettes. Unfortunately, the project was discontinued after the pilot testing because of several glitches in the system.

Developer

Prof. Velasquez adds that it has actually been a year since the beginning of this project. The current administration enlisted the help of Ms. Elizabeth Loyola of UPIS batch 2008 in programming the system. Ms. Loyola is currently taking Computer Science in UP Diliman. She is also part of a corporation that makes computer programs for various companies. She has volunteered to do this project for free since she saw the need for computerization even when she was studying in UPIS. Prof. Velasquez says that this is a huge help since it would have cost roughly Php 130,000 if they were to hire other developers. Another advantage is that Ms. Loyola is already familiar with the UPIS system so she is to customize the system to suit the needs of the school.

Objectives

Prof. Velasquez explains that the main objective of the computerization is to ensure the accuracy of the student records. She says that in the past, the student body’s grades are written down one by one by a handful of staff, thus, there is always a high possibility for human error to occur.

"The computerized system is also helpful for the generation of school transcripts that are often requested by alumni. The new system is also of use for future researches to be conducted by the ORDP," adds Prof. Velasquez.

How the Program Works

A computer server hosts a program which contains the database of the students' records. It has the capacity to handle the update of grades and student and faculty profiles, and can generate the permanent record, transcript, honor roll, and class list of every batch. Because it holds all of the students' data, the server is dedicated to house only the files related to the computerization project.

The staff of the records office has updated the student profiles into the database. Now, teachers can finally access the terminal where they can input and print the grades themselves, and just sign it after. This makes the result more accurate since it is only accessible from a limited number of terminals.

The project team is still continuing to update the program based on the school's needs. They also recommend getting new equipment for the use of the records office.

Advantages

On the surface, the effect of this new system may not be visible to this year's K-10 students, but for the ones who have always been calculating and writing the grades of every UPIS student, it is a huge help. Not only is it a faster way of updating everything, it also provides a more efficient and more accurate way of recording for the teachers and the ORDP staff.

Progress

The project is composed of 5 phases: developing the framework of the project, encoding and software development, pilot testing, completing and refining the modules, and completion of the program.

Grades encoding and generation is now computerized, in time for 1st Quarter Card Giving on September 14.

UPIS team wins Teen Debate

UPIS won against Philippine Science Highschool in the 7th biennal convention hosted by the Society of Adolescent Medicine of the Philippines, Inc. (SAMPI) held last September 3 at the Diamond Hotel in Roxas Boulevard.

The judges pronounced the UPIS team composed of Red Bartolome, Mikee Neri, and Joanna Pagulayan as the overall winner and Bartolome as the best speaker.

The topic of the debate was “Social Networking: Boon or Bane” which was given last July for the teams to research on UPIS was given the affirmative stand.

The debate consisted of two rounds. The first in which both sides gave two constructive speeches and two rebuttals. Junior Maroons tramples UE

The Junior Maroons blew past University of the East, 82-67, in their first game of the 2nd round last August 30 at the MOA Arena.

UPIS started red-hot as they scored basket after basket to get the early lead. Defense was also key as they forced multiple turnovers to end the first quarter 24-8.

The 2nd quarter was a Paolo Ancheta show as he put up 15 points in the 2nd quarter. UPIS continued the pace and ended the half with a whopping 29-point lead, 47-18.

The Junior Maroons led as much as 38 in the 2nd half but UE attempted to make a comeback headed by Joshua Viajar. UE cut the lead to 19 in the last one and a half minutes but a flagrant foul penalty 1 on Viajar stopped their momentum. ● by Juanito Gregorio

UPIS Scrabble Team joins Milo Little Olympics

The UPIS 7-10 Scrabble Team joined the Milo Little Olympics Scrabble Tournament held in Marikina City last September 1.

The team is composed of juniors Diego Manansala, Angelo Nueva, and Regie dela Cruz, and sophomores Anthony Gososo, and Eric Rarugal.

The UPIS team went up against 16 other groups and came out as one of the Top 4 teams in the first four rounds of competition. They got a total of 10 wins in 16 rounds.

In preparation for the tournament, the team trained under the supervision of Michael Jude Tomamac, former UPIS Scrabble Club President.

UPIS varsity teams compete in Milo Little Olympics

The UPIS Varsity Swimming Team (VST) and Girls’ Volleyball Team competed in the Milo Little Olympics held last September 1–2 in Marikina City.

Three swimmers went home with medals from various events in the competition. Sophomore Pricila Aquino won gold medals in the 800m freestyle and 200m individual medley, and silver medals in the 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, and 400m freestyle events. Senior Joy Rodgers won golds in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, while Jeremiah Esguerra won a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, the UPIS Girls' Volleyball team lost to Rich Golden Shower Montessori School, 2 sets to none.

Rich Golden Shower was able to catch up on a deuce two in the first set. It took the biggest lead on the 2nd set, scoring 5-13. Great services from Trizia Badong trimmed the lead but their opponents held on to win, 23-25. ● by Miguel Flores and Nina Leis

Banatao, Marquez win in Singapore math competition

Nathan Arthur Banatao and John Henry Marquez from grade 5-Arayat won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the 8th International Mathematics Contest held in Singapore last August 4.

They trained with the Mathematics Trainers Guild in preparation for the competition and competed against foreign students, all of whom are in their age group.
