This year’s Instrumental Music (IM) class for the first semester held their recital last December 11, Tuesday, at the UPIS Auditorium.

Led by Prof. Shiela Jay Pineda, 29 students performed a few pieces for their class ensemble, as well as their chosen compositions. The students had the option of performing individually, as a group, or with accompanists.

For their chosen pieces, they were allowed to choose one classical and one modern piece to perform. Some played with a viola, ukulele, beatbox, bass guitar and/or keyboard while others opted to sing while playing their instrument.

The class prepared for the recital since the start of the first semester. During the 2nd quarter, the students started to work on their chosen songs while they continued learning a few more pieces for their class performance.

One of the goals of the recital was to showcase the students’ talents and hard work in learning how to play an instrument, particularly the guitar. Also, the recital aims to provide an opportunity for a communal learning experience by making music with and for others, and to increase the appreciation and enjoyment of music.

Despite challenges during the preparation, such as conflicting class schedules and cancellations due to unpredictable weather, Prof. Pineda shared her best experience about the recital. “Seeing the students put their hearts into learning and witnessing them play one piece at a time, especially those who did not know how to play the guitar or read notes when they signed up for this course,” she said.

“Ang pinakaimportanteng natutunan ko ay ang kahalagahan ng practice dahil malaki ang deperensya kapag meron at wala. [Bagaman] nakulangan ako ng oras para magpractice outside IM, ginagawa ko, bago mag-IM ako nagpapractice. Napakasaya ng recital, kahit kinabahan, na-enjoy ko pa rin ang buong experience,” Alex Yangco shared about his experience during class and the recital itself.//by Nicole Desierto & Roan Ticman
