Literary (Submission): Mausoleum

1/20/2014 08:05:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

I’m a few kilometers from the cemetery, but I already feel the dread. I remember everything that has happened these past few days in the hospital and my heart breaks.

These are the times when I wish I were a child again. To feel your soft, wrinkly hand holding mine in earnest. As I looked up to you, I always saw a smile on your face, despite the cancer in your heart.

I enter the gate of the cemetery and continue my way to the memorial garden. I didn’t even have to think as I drive to the family mausoleum, for I have memorized every turn.

Upon reaching the mausoleum, I let my car screech to a halt. I sigh and touch my forehead to the steering wheel. I close my eyes and, unwillingly, I remember the day you left us for Him.

It was a chilly September morning, and all I could see was black. Black hats, black gloves, black dresses and pants. I was so young then, only a few years into my teens. I refused to go near your casket. To go near it would mean I’m accepting the fact that I will never again sit by your rocking chair and tell you about my day. I will never again smell my favorite dishes cooking in the kitchen of our humble abode. I will never again see you smiling at me despite the mistakes I make.

I knew, though. I knew I had to accept the fact that you were gone. That all I will ever see of you now was a name on a slab of stone with words written out of hurt, despair. Confusion.

And so I force myself to look at you.

I couldn’t help the sob that I let out. Immediately, the tears started to fall down my cheeks. I was silenced. You looked so serene. As if no hardship has ever fallen between your palms. In that moment, I knew. I knew I had to let you go, grandmum.

I let my tears fall freely, and it feels good. For once in so many months, I am at peace. I’m finally consoled with the fact that you are happy. With that, I smile forcefully and let go of my tight hold on the edge of your casket.

I bring myself back to the present and open my car door. I look around and see that no regret should be felt regarding the amount I paid to have the mausoleum maintained.

The key clicks as I put it into the lock and the sound reverberates through my heart. I try to smile, but I can’t help the tears that gather under my cheeks and pour down the sides of my face.

I see your gravestone, and I can’t help the sob that escapes me.

Mother. Grandmother. Sister. Best friend.
Your memory stays in our hearts forevermore.

As I have, every single time I visit you, I cry my heart out. I look to the other side of the lonely building, and see a newly-dug space. Then, I fall to the ground. Hard.

Because once again I will witness another mother leaving me for Him. / by Bestie

1/20/2014 07:49:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

You wait outside the Golden Dollar Pawnshop for a Hollywood town heiress to walk out. Out of the shop after pawning her pink diamond earrings. She does not want her Daddy to know she has maxed out all her platinum credit cards. You take your time before you pounce on her “God-given beauty.” Or was it just because she has a lot of glittering money?

With a handsome businessman front you enter the golden gates. Walking inside hand-in-hand with your dewy-eyed companion. Bet all her money and some of yours away. No money and no honey, the golden gates will now refuse you. Out you go onto the sidewalk. Looking at the bright side you realize that you did not get beat up.

Mr. Gold digger must be a real sinner to be kicked of his shining palace. Must be hard to be near the commotion and euphoria outside the glittering walls.

See you shortly, I’m right outside. Come pick me up from the train stop. I’ll let you know what it feels like to be with Ms. Gold digger real soon. / by Mercer

Literary (Submission): Was, Were, Did. Done.

1/09/2014 08:41:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

You... were my everything. But that's exactly it. "Were."

Now, you are nothing. "We" are nothing.

I loved the way you smiled. Everybody said I changed you. From the way you talked, the way you acted. It was new. Happy. Alive in every sense of the word. I saw it, too, in your eyes. They sparkled with every smile, every laugh.

You... you loved all the cheesy stuff. Carrying my things, asking if I was okay. You were a true gentleman, to be exact. You weren't perfect. You didn't have to be. You were IDEAL.

I loved how proud you were of me. My every little success was your victory. You took joy in them. You were the epitome of my pride. I didn't need to boast. Your victorious smile was enough. Every little thing I did was a wonder to you.

You loved me; I know you did. I was every thing you ever wanted, only slightly dented. When you were with me, you smiled your best smile; you laughed your best laugh. Only when you were with me.

I sound like I'm boasting. In truth, all I ever am is missing you. You put me through a storm, no, rather, a whirlwind so strong I was carried away. You took me as I was and created someone who was strong. Someone who was sure of herself. Someone enviable. You gave me the adventure I have always vied for.

But. Everything "was" and has come to pass.

You were my everything. And that's exactly it. "Were." / by Bestie

Literary: Countdown

1/09/2014 08:13:00 PM Media Center 1 Comments

I look around and see busy people around the room. Everyone is talking to someone else and enjoying themselves. Everyone is happy except for me. It is New Year’s Eve and I’m at a friend’s party all alone. A big part of me did not want to come. But my friend convinced me to go, anyway.

A part of the reason why I did not want to go was that hazel-eyed boy standing on the opposite side of the room. He was talking to his friends and it seems like he doesn’t have a single problem with me here. Then again, why would he? He was the one who stopped talking to me anyway. In the end, the one who always loses is me.

30 seconds. I lean back on the wall and look down at my shoes. I’m starting to regret my coming here more. The countdown is getting louder and the room is getting more crowded. I glance across the room again and see that he hasn’t moved an inch. There is no chance of us being good again before the year ends.

10 seconds. I push myself off the wall, wanting to get out of the house. I could no longer stay in here. My throat is already hurting and I could feel tears stinging my eyes. I’m about to leave but then I feel a pair of hands push me right back on the wall.

5 seconds. Confusion is taking over me and I feel my heart beat fast. His hands are on my sides and I couldn’t get out even if I tried. “What are you—“ I cry, but he cuts me off with a kiss just as the clock strikes twelve.

He puts away and stares down at me “Happy New Year. I still love you very much,” he says quietly. He gives me a smile he has shown me before and turns around to go.

I’m left standing there, a surprised look plastered on my face.

I’m not going to be alone this year, after all. / by Daisy

From fourth to first: 2x9 sweeps Power Dance 2013

1/09/2014 07:57:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

UPIS Batch 2018, also known as 2x9, battled back from their fourth place finish last year to win Best Cheer and Best Costume, and the overall Power Dance Championship after wowing the crowd with a fun and creative street dance routine featuring the UPIS students of the future. (Watch their performance here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REs5c3gMo50)

Full Circle. One of the highlights of Batch 2018's Street Dance routine.
(c) Lyka Lubang
This year's field demonstration competition took on the futuristic street dance motif in line with the theme "FuturISKO: UPIS Isko sa Makabagong Panahon."

Batches from Grades 7 to 10 initially had a difficult time adjusting to their new surroundings, limited practice space, and tight schedule but still rehearsed and prepared well for the event.

2x9's victory marks the first time in more than ten years that a Grade 8 batch won the Power Dance plum.

This year's seniors (Batch 2014) claimed first runner-up honors with their "New Age" routine while Batch 2015's "Infected" performance finished third. / by Hannah Atela, Claire Diaz, and Angelique Liwag

UPIS helps Tacloban students

1/09/2014 07:55:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

After super typhoon Yolanda destroyed most of the houses, buildings, roads, and sources of livelihood in Tacloban, Leyte, students from the area still showed their willingness to continue schooling and receiving proper education.

UPIS is one of the institutions which offered these students the chance to attend classes as temporary or sit-in students.

Isabella P. Naputo, a senior from St. Therese Educational Foundation of Tacloban Inc. (STEFTI), is one of three students who took this opportunity.

"Nalaman ko sa kapatid kong nag-aaral sa UP na pwedeng mag-sit-in dito sa UPIS," said Isabella. She was then asked to submit a letter of intent indicating her request to be a sit-in student.

When asked of her expectations on UPIS and its educational system, Isabella answered, "Sa totoo lang, inexpect ko na parang Philippine Science ang UPIS. Pareho lang ng quality of education. Mabilis natuturo at mas maaga nagtatapos ang klase."

She also said that her first impression of UPIS is that students and teachers are very welcoming. "Maganda ang building," she added.

She will only finish the third quarter of this school year to receive a certificate stating that she attended classes at UPIS. She will go back to Tacloban on the last week of January in time for the resumption of classes in February.

"Babalik pa rin ako sa STEFTI dahil doon ako lumaki," she shared. / by Angelique Liwag and Vinz Villanueva
