The sky is dark and placid, a haven of peace and quiet in our chaotic life. It is dotted with stars, albeit barely seen in the bright lights of the city. Their glow is faint yet prominent. I cast my glance aside and see her, eyes closed as if deep in thought, enjoying the fresh air as her hair billows in the strong wind. The sunken garden is beautiful at night, peaceful and calming. She opens an eye at me and I tell her that we should retire for the night. We drive off in our old beat up Volkswagen bug, resigned in our own thoughts.

- Ligia Daroy, 6-Emerald

UPIS Boys Volleyball team loses to Mapua

10/03/2011 04:15:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Paolo Enrico Aljibe

The Mapua College Volleyball team defeated the UPIS Boys Volleyball team, 2 sets to none, in the last game of the 2-day UPMVT League at the Claret School of Quezon City gymnasium last September 25.

before a game. Photo courtesy of Paolo Aljibe.
Though UPIS showed great teamwork and determination, Mapua’s experience and skills proved to be too much and the team lost 2 consecutive sets, 25-17 and 25-14.

The team's goal was to gain experience and exposure especially for new members who played in a league for the first time.

Team captain Ali Verso played well for the team and was most commendable for his strong spikes. Setter Alex Silvestre also contributed valuable saves throughout the game.

Miguel Bongato, who played for the opposing team in one of the games, said that he learned the value of teamwork. He thought that it felt different playing for the opponent. He is also very excited to play in the UAAP and other leagues because it makes him more experienced as a volleyball player.

UPIS also lost to Claret School and the Xavier School college team earlier that day. Their UAAP games start in mid-November.

Junior Maroons dominate Falcons in table tennis doubles

Audri Gabriel and Mark Otiong of the UPIS Table Tennis team defeated Adamson's Lingat and Emotan II, 3 sets to 1, in their first doubles game for UAAP season 74 last September 24.

The Falcons won the first set, 9-11, but the Junior Maroons fought back to take the second set, 11-8. They continued their dominance in the third set, 11-6, and finished off the fourth game strongly, 11-9.

The Junior Maroons were not so lucky in the singles games, however, as Pocholo Taduran failed to beat Catilo in 3 sets, 6-11, 9-11, and 9-11. Miguel Sobrevinas won the second set against Ingeniero, 12-10, but failed to capitalize

UPIS nanalo sa MathSciaKa

Sarah Romero

Opinion: The Need to Stand Up

10/01/2011 08:51:00 PM Media Center 0 Comments

Angelo Fetalvero

It was just a trifle thing, a simple game created for some mindless fun. Its aim was to create the best and the unlikeliest picture and share it with everyone for some laughs and giggles. Yet, as people lay down in the middle of the streets as a sign of protest, in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the always frantic Manila traffic, has planking gone a bit too far? Apparently, someone in Congress thinks so.

Illustrated by Jemima Yabes
On September 20, Congressman Winston Castelo of Quezon City proposed a bill prohibiting people from planking as a means of protest. This was in response to a recent transport strike during which people planked at the middle of Espana Boulevard to show their distaste over the rocketing fuel prices. According to the congressman, doing that in the middle of the road puts the safety of both the motorists and the protesters at risk. As much as he respects the right of the protesters to express their opinion, everyone’s safety should be the top priority.

The congressman brings up a good point. Everything, including radical protests, need to be done in proper places and the middle of the road is simply not the place to do it. Planking at the middle of the road brings up unnecessary danger for everyone. Yet, banning planking as a way to express disapproval over the current norms is going a bit too far and it steps on the First Amendment right of demonstrators. Only a simple bill regulating planking and making them plank in proper areas should be passed so that the protesters can express their concerns in their own unique way while maintaining public safety.

Planking seemed to have finally piqued the government’s attention but surely this was not the reaction that the protesters wanted. It seems that the way they expressed their protests has overshadowed what they were actually protesting about.

The sky high fuel prices and the ill conceived budget cuts in the educational sector seem to have taken a back seat and the ban seems to be a ploy to make people forget about these pressing problems. These issues were the reason why those protesters were willing to endanger their safety and their bravery shows the gravity of these issues. The way that Congress reacted to these planking incidents is a big slap on the face of these protesters and shows the incompetency and inefficiency of the legislature. Instead of bickering and wasting their time over planking, officials should just get their acts together and fix the more crucial problems bugging the country like corruption, poverty and crime.

If only these officials could stand up and free themselves from the shackles of mediocrity and ignorance to tackle such major issues with the enthusiasm they showed in curbing planking, the country can certainly make great strides forward.
