Coffee shops are known for selling different kinds of quality coffee. But because of the place’s relaxing ambiance and comforting atmosphere, it evolved into a hangout place. It became a perfect haven for people who are looking for a venue for a meeting, study or work session. Some prefer going to coffee shops not just because of what they serve, but also because of their offered services such as internet access, air-conditioning, comfortable fixtures, etc. This is why most people tend to stay in coffee shops for several hours or as some people would call it: “coffee shop camping.”
Camping at a coffee shop is easy but sometimes it is inevitable to experience some discomfort or dilemmas while staying there. You may find yourself contemplating on whether you should go to the bathroom or have a minor panic attack as your laptop or phone is starting to run out of battery while all the power sockets are occupied. So, here is a simple guide to avoid these kinds of instances and to enjoy the coffee shop camping experience.

Find the bathroom

This would immediately solve an impending worry of having to get up to use the bathroom and leaving your belongings unattended. Before finding a table, use the bathroom first so you won’t be interrupted or disturbed once you’ve already started doing your work.

Make sure they have fast and accessible Wi-Fi

If you need to use the internet while working, you must first make sure they have accessible Wi-Fi. Ask the baristas or any employee first before buying anything so you don’t have to end up wasting your time and money just drinking or eating and not being productive. If ever this happens, an advice would be to just finish up quickly and find a different place with internet access to work at.
However, if your situation does not really demand the use of internet connection, then it may be better not to have access to one. For it can be helpful to you yet it can be a source of distraction and can decrease productivity. To be safe, just try not to use the internet for personal use and remember to focus on your task.

Sit near a power outlet but not too far from the cashier

Find a seat before buying anything and if you are going to use your gadgets, sit near a power outlet so you won’t have to worry about running out of battery. But don’t be too greedy of the outlet for some customers might also need to charge so try to leave it open once you have a full-battery. Try to also sit near the cashier so you can still slightly keep an eye on your belongings while ordering.

Order something cold and bitter

If you’re planning to buy just one drink while you are staying, try ordering something cold and bitter like Iced Americano or Iced Espresso. This is because having hot coffee will leave you with a moderately warm drink over time while iced drinks just stay cold. A bitter drink would be helpful in trying to keep your focus on your work and so that you won’t end up finishing your drink quickly. Plus, cold drinks are great because once some of the ice has melted it will lessen the bitterness of your drink and it might just end up tasting better as you complete your work.

Get and drink water

Most coffee shops have a water station where customers can get and drink water for free. If you’re still trying to make your ordered drink last longer, drinking water would help. It can get rid of the bittersweet taste of coffee that has been on your tongue for quite some time and it is also good for your health.

Be kind to the barista

Since you will be staying in the coffee shop for quite a long time, it would be nice if you act kindly toward the barista for you’re taking a table for the next customer who might bring in more profit. Also feel free to tip them if you ever feel guilty or too uncomfortable about over staying at the place.
These are just some helpful, tried and tested tips for camping in coffee shops, to help you have a comfortable place to stay and be productive at. Although, don’t get too comfortable for it is still a public place and proper etiquette should still be observed whenever you’re staying in places like this. Also, don’t forget to keep an eye on your personal belongings and never leave them unattended. As much as possible, try keeping them close to you or at least where you can easily see them.
But remember, avoid staying there for the whole day (more than 8 hours) and only buying one item. After all it is still a business and you are somehow just renting your spot. But still, if you’re just there for quite some time and you want to have a nice stay, try following this simple guide and have a nice camp at the coffee shop.//by Elane Madrilejo
