Sports: UPISTnF and VST dominate Milo Little Olympics 2017

The University of the Philippines Integrated School (UPIS) Track and Field (TnF) and Varsity Swimming Team (VST) players dominated the 30th Milo Little Olympics last September 22-24, 2017.

Senior sprinter Reinard Grimaldo bagged 2 silvers in the 200m dash and 110m hurdles and also clinched a bronze in the 100m dash event to lead the UPIS Tracksters.

Grimaldo, together with RL Calayan, Megarth Morillo, and Winter Quiambao won another bronze in the 4x400m Relay. Grimaldo, Calayan, Morillo teamed up with with Carlo Atela finished 2nd in the 4x100m Relay for another silver.

Quiambao and Morillo also showed excellent individual performances as they snatched silver in 5000m run and bronze in 400m dash, respectively.

Thrower Elkan Reyes also grabbed the gold in his shotput event and bronze in discus throw.

Meanwhile, the UPIS VST ruled the swimming division of the competition.

Palarong Pambansa standout Zoe Hilario led the girl’s division as she produced 5 gold medals from her 200m Butterfly, 200m IM, 200m Backstroke, 100m and 200m Freestyle events. She clinched her 6th gold with Isabel Baclig, Rikki Melencio, and Maria Neri in their 4x50m Freestyle event.

Melencio also chipped in 2 bronzes from 400m Freestyle and 200m IM, a silver from 200m Backstroke, and a gold from 800m Freestyle. She also bagged a silver with Hilario, Baclig, and Neri from their 4x50m Medley Relay.

Neri contributed 3 silvers to the team’s medal count from her 200m Breaststroke events for both days, and 800m Freestyle event.

UPISVST Senior Swimmers Joanne De Castro, Angel Dizon, Ria Amano, accompanied by Waya Silarde, also tallied their medals in their 4x50m and 4x100m Freestyle Relay events.

On the other hand, Antonio Aquino IV delivered a spectacular job to top the boy’s division as he finished bronze in his 400m and 800m Freestyle events. He also bagged 3 silvers from his 200m Breaststroke events and in the 200m Individual Medley (IM).

Aquino, together with Gerald Almajar, Mark Lazaro, and Joshua Sedurante, also bagged a bronze from their 4x50m Medley Relay. He also joined Rouel Bernos, Kennard Bondal, and Keanne Nuevas in a silver finish in the 4x50m Medley Relay in the second day.

Almajar, Lazaro, Nuevas, and Polo Uera tallied a silver from their 4x50m Freestyle Relay while Bernos, and Bondal, joined by Francisco Diaz and Ejaz Pupos, contributed a bronze to the team’s medal count from their 4x100m Freestyle Relay.

Both UPISTnF and UPISVST are preparing for their upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Seasons. // by Carlos Laderas

  1. Thanks for writing about the UP swimmers & tracksters. May I just make a correction: Rikki Melencio actually got a silver in the 400m freestyle (not bronze). All in all (including the 2 relays), Rikki Melencio earned 2-golds, 3-silvers and 2-bronzes. Thank you...(Mrs. Melencio)
